While a vaccine will provide some measure of protection to societies around the globe, the virus is likely to flare up from time to time and be constantly battled, much like the flu and other pathogens. “We know this virus is not going away any time soon. It’s established itself and is going to keep on transmitting wherever it’s able to do so,” Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist for the World Health Organization, at the “How Covid-19 Is Reshaping the Global Healthcare Ecosystem” event hosted by Bloomberg Prognosis. “We know we have to live with this.” Humanity’s record against viruses is poor. Only one virus has been fully driven out of existence in humans – smallpox. The rest are managed, with brushfires stomped out ...
The United States Postal Service has warned that in Pennsylvania, some mail-in ballots may not be delivered in time to be counted this November. In a July letter to Pennsylvania State Secretary Kathy Boockvar, USPS general counsel Thomas Marshall described the "risk that ballots requested near the deadline under state law will not be returned by mail in time to be counted under your laws as we understand them," NBC News reports. The USPS also described Pennsylvania's current deadlines as "incongruous with the Postal Service's delivery standards," per Axios.
DURHAM, N.C. – Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are choosing neck gaiters as their go-to face covering. The ease with which they can slide up and down the face makes them a favorite among runners and hikers. Now, however, a new study suggests this lightweight, breathable fabric may be worse at blocking the coronavirus than wearing no face mask at all. Researchers at Duke University say bandanas and neck gaiters are among the worst choices for face coverings when it comes to blocking fluid droplets. To study how well face masks prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Duke team focused on fluid droplets coming from the mouth when people speak. To do this, they used an inexpensive apparatus made from cheap and easily obtained laboratory mat...
Flare-ups from Australia to Japan show the world hasn’t learned an early lesson from the coronavirus crisis: to stop the spread, those with mild or symptom-free coronavirus infections must be forced to isolate, both from their communities and family. In Australia, where Victoria state has been reporting record deaths, some 3,000 checks last month on people who should have been isolating at home found 800 were out and about. In Japan, where the virus has roared back, people are staying home but aren’t in isolation: 40% of elderly patients are getting sick from family members in the same apartments. The failure to effectively manage contagious people with mild or no symptoms is a driving factor behind some of the world’s worst resurgences. But lessons ...
Israel claimed Wednesday that it had thwarted a cyberattack by a North Korea-linked hacking group on its classified defense industry. The Defense Ministry said the attack was deflected “in real time” and that there was no “harm or disruption” to its computer systems. However, security researchers at ClearSky, the international cybersecurity firm that first exposed the attack, said the North Korean hackers penetrated the computer systems and were likely to have stolen a large amount of classified data. Israeli officials fear the data could be shared with North Korea’s ally, Iran. Read more at New York Times.
Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith will plead guilty to making a false statement in the first criminal case arising from U.S. Attorney John Durham's review of the investigation into links between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign, Clinesmith's attorney told The Associated Press on Friday. Clinesmith was referred for potential prosecution by the Justice Department's inspector general's office, which conducted its own review of the Russia investigation. Specifically, the inspector general accused Clinesmith, though not by name, of altering an email about former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page to say that he was "not a source" for another government agency. A Justice Department investigation has found Yale University is illegally discriminating against Asian American and white applicants, in violation of federal civil rights law, officials said Thursday. Yale denied the allegation, calling it “meritless” and “hasty.” The findings detailed in a letter to the college’s attorneys Thursday mark the latest action by the Trump administration aimed at rooting out discrimination in the college application process, following complaints from students about the application process at some Ivy League colleges. President Trump on Thursday drew swift backlash after he declined to disavow a baseless and racist conspiracy theory that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) would not be eligible to serve as vice president. Trump at a news conference was asked about an op-ed in Newsweek that was shared by an adviser to his campaign that raised the possibility Harris, who was born in Oakland, Calif., to immigrant parents, does not meet the requirements to hold the office. The president, who spent much of then-President Obama’s time in office pushing the racist and unfounded “birther theory” that he was not born in the United States, said he had “no idea” if Harris was ineligible to run for vice president. An Ohio official announced Wednesday that voters won’t be turned away from polling places if they refuse to wear a mask, even with the state’s mask mandate amid the coronavirus pandemic. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said during a press briefing that the state will encourage but not require people to wear face coverings to vote in person. “If a voter chooses not to wear a mask, we’re going to offer them an alternative to maybe vote outside — curbside, which has been part of Ohio’s voting process for a long time,” LaRose said. “If they choose not to do that, of course nobody’s going to be turned away. Everyone will have access to the polling locations, but all voters should of course wear a mask as well.” Read more a...

The 2020 Republican National Convention theme will be “Honoring the Great American Story,” Fox News reported — and include Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., among  the speakers. According to the news outlet, which cited unnamed sources, the Trump campaign on Thursday held back-to-back phone calls with GOP members of Congress to review themes for the event in Charlotte, N.C. The GOP’s theme is in “stark contrast to the doom and gloom message we expect to hear from career politicians at the DNC convention,” Fox News quoted the source saying. According to Ballotpedia, the first day of the convention, Monday, Aug. 24, will be focused on a “land of heroes” theme; on Tuesday, it’ll be “land of promise.” On Wednesday, ...
President Donald Trump fired back at Joe Biden’s call for a national face mask mandate, saying his campaign opponent is “politicizing the pandemic” and does not understand law and executive authority. “If the president has the unilateral power to order every single citizen to cover their face in nearly all instances, what other powers does he have?” Trump told reporters during the daily press briefing Thursday. “That’s why he refused, Biden, to take questions. He couldn’t answer any of them. He never takes questions. “I take questions, he never takes questions. And you sort of wonder what’s going on because they are not that difficult.” Biden and Kamala Harris made recommendations for a three-month national face...
A newly developed saliva test aims to determine in less than a second whether or not you are infected with the novel coronavirus, Israel’s largest medical center said Thursday. Patients rinse their mouth with a saline wash and spit into a vial. This is then examined by a small spectral device that, in simple terms, shines light on the specimen and analyzes the reaction to see if it is consistent with COVID-19. With machine learning it gets more accurate over time. Read more at NEWSMAX.
Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s new running mate, has yet to pay a debt of more $1.1 million that she accumulated from an unsuccessful 2020 presidential run, according to the Federal Election Commission. The California senator brought in roughly $39 million in fundraising during her bid in 2019 and spent $40 million. After her campaign ended, it had only $116,380 in the bank by the end of June. Last December, Harris stopped her campaign once her numbers fell and fundraising dried up. By the end of June, the campaign owed $523,883 to international law firm Perkins Coie LLP and $160,702 to private security company TorchStone Global LLC. Read more at NEWSMAX.
President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, on Thursday blasted FBI Director Christopher Wray, alleging he’s stonewalled information that would have cleared Trump 18 months ago, In an interview on Newsmax TV’s “The Chris Salcedo Show,” Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a onetime federal prosecutor, was grilled about a subpoena to Wray from GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who accuses the top G-man of slow-walking Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee requests for documents. “He has deliberately obstructed the delivery of information that would have cleared the president a year, a year and a half ago,” Giuliani charged, giving a thumbs-down and declaring Wray is “not the ri...
