Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today (Sunday, 9 August 2020): "This morning I was told of the capture of the terrorist who was involved in planning the murderous March 2010 attack on the Gaza Strip border fence which claimed the lives of Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz. All those who seek our ill should know that even if years pass, the State of Israel will not rest until we settle accounts with the terrorists."
Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday said it’s highly unlikely a coronavirus vaccine with 98 percent effectiveness will be developed. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said a vaccine that is 50 percent or 60 percent effective would be acceptable, although 75 percent would be preferred. “The chances of it being 98 percent effective is not great, which means you must never abandon the public health approach,” Fauci said during a Q&A with Brown University School of Public Health. “You’ve got to think of the vaccine as a tool to be able to get the pandemic to no longer be a pandemic, but to be something that’s well-controlled,” Fauci said. The FDA said it would only authorize a coronav...
Imagine the following scenario. The regional director of a mainstream Jewish organization in a city that is home to sizable Jewish and black communities starts sharing ugly, racist caricatures of African-Americans on social media. In a speech at a local synagogue, this same person denounces the influence of African-Americans on our broader culture as “Satanic.” Then, when this outrageous behavior becomes the subject of media attention, that individual refuses to resign from their post and even retains the backing of their organization. You can’t seriously imagine something like this because it wouldn’t happen outside of an alternate universe. The core ethics of every American Jewish organization would be utterly violated by such expressions of naked racial hatred, ...
The Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, a BDS-promoting NGO with ties to the U.S.-designated terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), will be leading “Days of Resistance” in major cities worldwide throughout this weekend. The protests are slated for Aug. 7 to Aug. 9, timed to mark the 48th anniversary of the death of one of the PFLP’s senior political bureau officials, Ghassan Kanafani. Samidoun has planned to hold its protests in at least seven different cities including New York; Vancouver, British Columbia; Manchester, England; Glasgow, Scotland; Copenhagen, Denmark; Gothenburg, Sweeden; and Charleroi, Belgium. “It is inconceivable that a terrorist group like the PFLP is set to receive a warm w...
Senior officials within the Blue and White party told i24NEWS that their colleagues were engaged in talks with four senior Likud figures to avert a brewing coalition crisis over a looming budget vote that threatens to take Israel to yet another general election. Moreover, the sources also told i24NEWS that Blue and White parliamentarians were trying to convince the Likud politicians to jump ship to the Benny Gantz’s centrist party should Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu force an election. According to the Blue and White officials, Netanyahu,  who is currently on trial for multiple corruption charges, is seeking a fourth election within under two years in order to “evade justice.” They said they counted on the integrity of their Likud ...
The United States on Friday slapped sanctions on Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam and 10 other senior figures, in a major new step against China’s clampdown in the semi-autonomous city. In the most significant US action since China imposed a tough security law, Lam and the other leaders of the Asian financial hub will have any assets in the United States blocked. The move also criminalizes any US financial transactions with them. “The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and we will use our tools and authorities to target those undermining their autonomy,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. The Israeli government’s Coronavirus Cabinet met Sunday afternoon, in a meeting which turned tense as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Alternate Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benny Gantz traded insults. The stormy Coronavirus Cabinet meeting was convened as the Likud and the Blue and White party remain deadlocked over the state budget, with the Likud calling for the passage of a less comprehensive, single-year spending plan, while Blue and White is demanding the Likud honor the coalition agreement which calls for a two-year budget to be passed. During the meeting Sunday, Gantz excoriated Netanyahu, accusing him of misleading Blue and White when he agreed to pass a two-year budget. “From day one you didn’t intend to honor the agreement on the biannual budget,...
BEIRUT (VINnews) — A Beirut woman was reaching the end of her labor just as explosions rocked the Lebanese capital last week. Her husband, who was trying to capture the special moments on film, caught a clip of the bedlam following the explosion instead. “Everything was shattered around,” Edmond Khnaisser, the woman’s husband, told CNN. “I went and got everything off my wife, helped a nurse get off the floor right in front of her bed and then I pulled my wife’s bed to a safe location.” Edmond wheeled his wife to safety and waited while doctors and nurses treated one another’s injuries before they attended to the birth of George, born an hour and a half after the explosion. “They stitched up each other, they were very professional and...
JERUSALEM (JNS/ALEX TRAIMAN) – Many of Israel’s modern military accomplishments have defied all odds and logic. Surprise victories in Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, Six-Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur War in 1973 will forever stand among Israel’s most miraculous and unlikely historical achievements. This past week, Israel may have recorded another security miracle, but one unlikely to be entered into Israeli history books. The reason? It did not take place on Israeli soil, or at the hands of the Israeli military. When a massive stockpile of weapons-grade ammonium nitrate exploded in the Beirut port on Aug. 4, it was without a doubt a tragedy of horrific proportions. At least 150 innocent civilians were killed and thousands more wounded. The damage to the cit...
The confirmed number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. reached 5 million Sunday, by far the highest in the world, according to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University. However, health officials believe that for every reported case, there are roughly 10 times as many people infected, given the limits on testing and the large number of mild infections that have unreported or unrecognized. The bleak milestone was reached as new cases in the U.S. run at about 54,000 a day. While that’s down from a peak of well over 70,000 in the second half of July, cases are rising in nearly 20 states, and deaths are climbing in most. Many Americans have resisted wearing masks and social distancing. 5 states account for more than 40% of US cases The pandemic shows no sign of slowing and health off...
An anonymous member of Sen. Joe Biden's presidential campaign lashed out at the Black reporter who had asked Biden about his cognitive state, according to a report in Axios. Breitbart News reported that the presumptive Democratic Party candidate was interviewed by the National Association of Black Journalists on Friday, August 7, and questioned whether the host of the program was a "junkie" after being asked if he had undergone a mental assessment. Since launching his campaign, Biden has made a number of on-air gaffes. A short list includes the former VP challenging an auto worker in Michigan to a fist fight, portraying federal forces helping state police fend off violent riots as "the enemy," claiming that 150 million Americans have died of gun violence and 120 ...
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help stop the coronavirus from spreading, but drinking the products turned out to be deadly for four people in two states. Health officials reported this week that 15 adults were poisoned in Arizona and New Mexico in May and June after drinking hand sanitizer. Besides the four who died, three had ongoing vision problems, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. All had consumed sanitizers containing methanol, or wood alcohol. The active ingredient that kills germs in legitimate sanitizers is ethyl alcohol, which is consumable. But some companies have been replacing it with poisonous methanol, which is used in antifreeze. Minneapolis Federal Reserve head Neel Kashkari says the United States needs a full economic shutdown for up to six weeks to halt the infection spike of COVID-19 — “and get it right this time.” In a Friday New York Times commentary written by Kashkari and Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, the pair argued the initial March lockdown did not go far enough. “To be effective, the lockdown has to be as comprehensive and strict as possible,” they wrote. “If we aren’t willing to take this action, millions more cases with many more deaths are likely before a vaccine might be available. In addition, the economic recovery will be much slower, with far more business failures and high unemployment for the next year or two.” Re...
Shai Dahan, an Israeli citizen detained in Ecuador, was killed during riots at a prison in the city of Guayaquil. His family has been notified. His cellmate, also an Israeli prisoner, was lightly injured and taken for medical treatment at a hospital. Ecuadorian media reported that Dahan was staying in a cell with foreign nationals and was killed after being hit by a blunt object. It is not clear how the attackers entered the cell and an investigation into the matter has been launched. Riots had previously broken out in the prison last week, in which 11 prisoners were killed and 13 prisoners and five guards were injured.
Famed Israel Prize laureate, known for his translation of the Talmud, wrote personal dedication to former PM Begin in Talmud set. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, who passed away last weekend, presented the late Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin with a Talmud set in which he wrote a special dedication. The Menachem Begin Heritage Center holds many books which were owned by Menachem Begin, including the Talmud which was given to him by Rabbi Steinsaltz. "In honor of R. Menachem Begin, the Prime Minister of Israel who every day decides the fate of the Jewish people, may the values of heaven and earth guide him to enter and leave in peace so that he may remain in ways in the Holy of Holies," Rabbi Steinsaltz wrote. The Democratic mayor of riot-torn Portland, Ore., on Friday pleaded for peace, warning demonstrators they’d become a “prop” for the reelection campaign of President Donald Trump. The message came during a virtual news conference called by Mayor Ted Wheeler after violent clashes between protesters and police have escalated tensions just days after a pact between state and federal officials appeared to bring calm. “This is a political point, so it’s a little out afield,” Wheeler said. “Don’t think for a moment that if you are participating in this activity that you are not being a prop for the reelection campaign of Donald Trump, because you absolutely are.” Read more at NEWSMAX.
The head of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on Friday said the agency faces a “dire” financial position even as it posted a slightly narrower third-quarter loss amid soaring package demand during the coronavirus pandemic. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said USPS has a “broken business model” and is in need of organizational changes. “Without dramatic change, there is no end in sight and we face an impending liquidity crisis,” DeJoy said. USPS said quarterly revenue rose to $17.6 billion, up $547 million. The quarterly net loss shrank to $2.2 billion from $2.3 billion in the same quarter last year. First-class mail volume declined by 1.1 billion pieces, or 8.4%. Shipping and packages revenue increased by $2.9 billion, or 53.6%, on a volume increase of 7...
JERUSALEM (VINNews) — A Jerusalem woman, the wife of a well renowned Torah scholar, contracted a debilitating virus twenty years ago. The virus attacked her body relentlessly and a number of her systems stopped functioning, leaving her bedridden and dysfunctional. She hardly ate and could not perform the most basic tasks. Recently the woman contracted coronavirus and due to her previous condition she deteriorated quickly. Doctors did not give much hope of a recovery, since she was already weakened by her chronic virus. When she required intubation it seemed that there was little hope left. However after a difficult battle with the virus, she succeeded in recovering sufficiently to remove her from the intubation. Her body fought the virus and unexpectedly she succeeded in leaving he...
JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The stated goal of Israel’s new coalition government, born after three exhausting and inconclusive election campaigns, was to deal with the mammoth economic and health crises created by the advent of coronavirus. However the bad blood and mutual distrust formed during those election campaigns has persisted into the government and threatens to send Israel into the nightmare scenario of yet another election which nobody wants and which the country can ill afford. The present impasse involves the clause in the coalition agreement calling for a two-year budget to be passed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to renege on this clause and to pass only a budget for the remainder of the current year, citing the uncertainty created by the coronavirus crisis, ...
