White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx warned that even though states are beginning to reopen, with some beaches being made available to the public over Memorial Day weekend, people must still maintain social distancing precautions and wear masks where appropriate. The U.S. death toll is expected to surpass 100,000 in the coming days, going well beyond an April projection of 60,000 total deaths and more in line with earlier predictions that expected the pandemic to yield casualties in the six-figure range. "[T]here’s clear scientific evidence now by all the droplet experiments that happen and that others have done to show that a mask does prevent droplets from reaching others," Birx told "Fox News Sunday," recognizing that Americans will...
JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Just prior to his appearance in court, Prime Minister Netanyahu met with Holocaust survivors who came from all around the country to express their support for him. One of the survivors said that she was praying for him like she prayed for her sister in the forest when she was wounded and sick. Another person wished him good health at a time “when all the wolves want to devour you.” One of those present said that 1000 survivors wanted to come and support him and signed a petition of support but in the end three buses had come to support him. A deeply moved Netanyahu thanked the survivors for all of their support.
A renowned epidemiologist told the “The Ingraham Angle” on Monday that a video he posted on YouTube questioning the effectiveness of widespread lockdowns amid the coronavirus pandemic was removed for violating “community standards.” Dr. Knut Wittkowski, an epidemiologist who was the head of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design at The Rockefeller University's Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Host Laura Ingraham noted that his video was viewed nearly 1.5 million times and asked Wittkowski why he thinks “there is so much pushback to your line of thinking?” “Because I think so many people have invested so much of their ego and so they have a problem acknowledging t...
The US could finally be free of the coronavirus in late September, and the whole world can expect to put the pandemic behind them in December, say scientists in Singapore. The rosy forecasts are from the Singapore University of Technology and Design, where researchers are using artificial intelligence to continually update their charting of the pandemic’s “life cycle” by country. At the end of April, predictions showed that the US would be virus-free by Sept. 20 and the UK could see the end of the coronavirus by Aug. 27, Metro.co.uk reported yesterday. But the group has since taken down its country-by-country charts from its website — instead posting a disclaimer that the research was strictly for educational purposes and may contain error...
A new study from scientists in the United States suggests that a significant majority of the population may already have some level of immunity to the coronavirus, a possible explanation for why so many individuals seem to experience few to no symptoms from the disease. The study, written by researchers in California, New York and North Carolina and soon to be published in the journal Cell, discovered that certain types of cells in blood samples taken from donors in 2015-2018—well before COVID-19 arose—were reactive against the COVID-19 virus. In other words, those blood samples were at least partially immune from the coronavirus even though they had never been exposed to it. “CD4+ T cell responses were detected in 40-60% of unexposed individuals. This ma...
Bochurim and yungeleit from chutz laaretz will be allowed to return to their yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel as long as their yeshiva can confirm that they have a place to quarantine, as per an arrangement orchestrated by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri. Each respective rosh yeshiva or rosh hamosad must submit the request for each non-Israeli talmid to the Interior Ministry, which will then review it and grant permission, requiring for each bochur to find private quarters, without roommates, as well as for the institutions to provide full meals for their students. This development comes after Israel allowed Israelis to return to Israel and enter quarantine, but had not been permitting non-Israeli citizens to enter the coun...

NEW YORK (VINnews) — “The Qur’an instructed Muslims to be righteous and benevolent to non-Muslims as long as they are peaceful and do not attack you or fight you. Muslims treated well the Jews who refused to enter Islam, starting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, until our time,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, secretary-general of the Muslim World League (MWL), a leading religious Muslim nongovernmental organization based in Mecca, in an interview with Arab News. Since taking his position in 2016, Sheikh Al-Issa has been traveling the world, forging relationships — with governments, religious institutions and NGOs (including the American Sephardi Federation and the American Jewish Committee) — and announcing historic init...
The long-awaited trial of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu opened Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., the culmination of three separate investigations spanning some three years. Netanyahu has been charged with bribery in the Case 4000 investigation, relating to claims he sped up regulatory reforms to benefit Bezeq owner Shaul Elovitch in exchange for favorable coverage from the Walla media outlet, which is also owned by Elovitch. In addition, the prime minister has been indicted on charges of fraud and breach of trust – though not bribery – in the Case 1000 investigation, which revolves around some 700,000 shekels-worth of gifts, including cigars, champagne, and jewelry, allegedly given to the prime minister and his family from wealthy businessmen. Netanyahu also faces ...
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu arrived at a Jerusalem courthouse on Sunday saying his head was "held high" as he began a long-delayed corruption trial. Wearing a suit and blue and white tie and flanked by ministers, Netanyahu addressed reporters before entering the court where he faces charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Again denying all allegations, he condemned the "ludicrous" charges against him. "I'm here with a straight back and my head held high," he said. Netanyahu, the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history, has long claimed to be the victim of a witchhunt and again suggested the charges were trumped up to stop him continuing in office. "When you need to take me down, a strong prime minister from the Right, everything is possible," he sai...
Hundreds of doctors wrote a letter to President Trump this week asking him to end the coronavirus shutdown, saying it is a “mass casualty incident” spurring deaths from other factors such as substance abuse and suicides. The letter, shared online, estimates about 150,000 Americans each month that the shutdown remains in place would have had new cancer detected, millions more are missing dental exams that could discover problems linked to heart disease, while others are experiencing domestic violence like child abuse. “Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” the letter sent to the president on Tuesday read. The letter adds, “We are alarmed at what appears to be the lack of consideration for the future health of our patients. … It is impossib...
Police in Peoria, Ill., are investigating nine broken windows at a shul in the city. Authorities believe the vandalism at Congregation Anshai Emeth, which houses the Hebrew Day School, occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, when it was reported to law enforcement. “It is under investigation by a detective, and at this point, there is no suspect information,” said Officer Amy Dotson, public-information officer for the Peoria Police Department. “No entry was made, and nothing in the chapel appeared to be disturbed.” She said the windows were broken by either rocks or bricks, and among the rooms impacted were classrooms and a kitchen. Dotson added that “we do have issues with kids and vandalism. I wouldn’t say it’s prevalent to houses o...

Former attorney general Jeff Sessions hit back at his former boss, President Donald Trump, on Friday night in their long-running disagreement over whether Sessions should have recused himself from the Russia interference investigation that consumed the first two years of Trump’s presidency. Sessions, who is running in Alabama to regain the Senate seat he left when he became Trump’s attorney general in 2017, faces a Republican primary runoff July 14 against former college football coach Tommy Tuberville. Trump has backed Tuberville, in large part because he is still angry that Sessions stepped away from the Russia case in early 2017, shortly before special counsel Robert Mueller III was appointed to take over the investigation. The president tweeted Friday evening: “3 y...
Brazil has surpassed Russia as the country with the second-highest reported coronavirus cases in the world on Friday, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. As of Saturday, the largest country in Latin America has recorded 347,398 cases of the virus and 22,013 deaths from the disease, trailing only the U.S., which has recorded 1.6 million confirmed cases of the virus and 96,983 deaths from the disease. Russia, which is now has the third most confirmed coronavirus cases, has reported 335,882 infections and 3,388 deaths. Read more at The Hill.
It’s a startling sight for any visitor to two U.S. cemeteries supposedly reserved for the remains of those who served their country in uniform: Swastikas emblazoned on the tombstones of three World War II-era German POWs who died in captivity, complete with messages honoring Adolf Hitler. The campaign to remove the Nazi symbols from the Veterans Administration-run graveyards in Texas and Utah — where they sit alongside memorials to fallen American service members — is rapidly gaining momentum, picking up support from a pair of influential lawmakers and prominent anti-hate groups who say the symbols represent a national disgrace. That effort gained steam this week when Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Florida Democrat who became the state’s first Jewish congresswoman...
Dozens of branches of Hatzalah emergency medical services, which operate volunteer first responder networks in Jewish communities around the world, collectively raised an unprecedented $15 million from some 83,000 donors last week amid the coronavirus pandemic. It was a remarkable statement of the community’s thanks to a group that has helped thousands of lives. An 18-hour global telethon united 47 Hatzalah chapters worldwide in a jam-packed concert with some of the best Jewish musicians in the world. Hatzalah chapters from the United States, Australia, Europe, Canada, Israel, South America and elsewhere were recipients. “We were giving back,” event producer Davidi Crombie told The Algemeiner. The talent was deep. The show included Jewish rock group 8th Day and modern...
A woman has died in the Gaza Strip after contracting coronavirus, the Palestinian enclave’s first known fatality from the global pandemic, the health ministry said on Saturday. Gaza, run by the Islamist group Hamas, has reported only 55 coronavirus infection cases among its population of two million. Meanwhile, in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank there have been two deaths and 423 cases. The Gaza health ministry described the fatality as a 77-year-old woman who had entered via the Egyptian border on May 19 and had been kept in quarantine since. She suffered from a prior chronic illness, the ministry said. Hamas, which has run Gaza since 2007, has closed crossings with Egypt and Israel except for essential traffic, but unlike in the West Bank it said a...
The Federal Bureau of Investigations will conduct an internal review of the probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. On Friday, the FBI announced it will review the investigation to see if there was any misconduct on behalf of the agents involved in the case and if any disciplinary action is needed. It is unclear how many of the investigators linked with the probe are still part of the FBI, but many of the key figures, including ex-Director James Comey, his deputy Andrew McCabe and agent Peter Strzok are already out. NEW YORK (JNS) – For Sarit Haviv, 53, of Mill Basin in Brooklyn, N.Y., the toughest part of having COVID-19 was seeing her beloved husband of 30 years, Shlomo Haviv, become ill after she did, and then summoning the strength while sick herself to fight for him to receive the care he needed. But with help from her family and community, she did it. On March 17 after returning by plane from a short trip to Michigan, the Havivs, who own an entertainment business, noticed symptoms. Sarit developed body aches, fever and a light cough. The next day, Shlomo, who is in his 60s, developed a backache. His fever spiked as high as 103 degrees. Unsure what type of flu they had—and fearing the coronavirus—the couple told their son and daughter-in-law, 20-somethings who live next doo...
