A Message from Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt Many people have asked about proper “protocols” for going outside during Shabbos, Yom Tov and Chol Hamoed, so I have put together this basic guideline for such activities. We strongly encourage people to go outside and get “fresh air” over Yom Tov (and in general). Isolation and quarantine do not mean that you should stay inside 24/7. Indeed, overall well-being and emotional health will be improved if people get out of their confined spaces and take walks. This is especially true for the three day Yom Tov when technology is generally not available for use. It is critically important that while we go outside, we MUST maintain the strict social distancing that we all have been employing. It would be a great shame if walking outs...
Israel’s medical forces are primed and ready, possess the expertise and are currently available to treat a much larger scope of ill patients than is likely at the immediate time. Israel has been working wisely thus far in combating the coronavirus crisis, and has used all possible tools to reduce the spread of the virus, including closing borders, placing people arriving from abroad in isolation, social distancing and extensive testing, as well as preparing the health system for very serious scenarios. The government has acted correctly and quickly, using an approach that slowed the rate of infection and contained the pandemic in hospitals, achieving reasonable medical results. We are not yet near the conclusion of this crisis, but rather, at its peak. However, alongs...
In a virtual town hall Tuesday night, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski said he expects the county's local revenue to drop by "tens of millions" next year as businesses are heavily affected by the coronavirus outbreak.  Olszewski also said his administration projects expenses for the coronavirus will be in the "tens of millions." He discussed budget proposals for next year as the county is in "uncharted territory" amid the coronavirus outbreak.  For 2021, the primary focus of the budget is providing resources to the workforce, schools and for public safety, according to Olszewski.  County lawmakers will have to make difficult decisions regarding the budget, but Olszewski said, "I remain optimistic that the steps we have taken to date and those we will cont...
Giant officials announced new policies Tuesday after a Largo store employee died from the coronavirus and another in Dundalk tested positive. Officials said they will start limiting the number of customers in Giant stores, encourage customers to shop with as few family members as possible and will begin one-way traffic in aisles. The Largo employee has been identified as 27-year-old Leilani Jordan. Officials said Jordan had not worked at the store since March 16 and tested positive for the virus later that month.  “We are saddened to confirm that a store associate from our Campus Way South location in Largo passed away from COVID-19,” Giant said in a statement. “We were informed of her passing on Thursday morning by her family." I felt the following thought is particularly pertinent this year when so many of us are confined to some degree of isolation and will not be part of the larger seder we are used to – some even conducting the seder in solitude. Please continue to daven for all of the cholim. Yom Tov hi miliz’ok, urfuah kerovah lavo. In the beginning of Maggid, we recite "Avadim hayinu." In this paragraph, we say that if not for the fact that HaKadosh Baruch Hu had taken us out of Mitzrayim, we would still be beholden to Paroah in Mitzrayim. Therefore, even if we are all wise, understanding knowers of the Torah, we have a mitzvah to tell over the story of yetzias Mitzrayim. To say that there are two questions to be asked on this paragraph would surely not be the whole truth. However, there are t...

At least 51 patients diagnosed as having fully recovered from the coronavirus in South Korea have tested positive a second time after leaving quarantine, according to officials. The patients from Daegu all tested positive in a “relatively short time” after they were given the all-clear from their initial infections, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said, according to the government-funded Yonhap News Agency. A specialist team has been sent to conduct an epidemiological investigation in the city, which is the epicenter of the epidemic in South Korea, the agency says. For now, the KCDC’s director-general, Jeong Eun-kyeong, believes it is likely the infection was re-activated after remaining dormant in the patients, as opposed to them being rein...

WhatsApp has put new restrictions on forwarded messages in an effort to clamp down on misinformation about the coronavirus. Users can now forward certain messages to only one conversation at a time instead of the previous limit of five, the service announced Tuesday. The rule applies to messages that have already been passed along several times, which WhatsApp labels with two arrows. The move is meant to slow down the viral forwarded messages that can overwhelm users and “contribute to the spread of misinformation,” according to WhatsApp. The platform said it has seen a spike in forwarding amid the coronavirus pandemic. “We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation,” the company said ...
Baltimore City Council President Brandon M. Scott (D) unveiled a number of legislative proposals Tuesday designed to support city residents during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. “Baltimore, let me be very clear: Baltimore is the city that cannot be broken. We have made it through things before; we will make it through this together,” he said during a virtual news conference. Notably, Scott has recommended that $25 million be pulled from the city’s rainy day fund to brace for the economic impact. He estimated that the fund’s current balance rests around $90 million. Scott is calling on the mayor and city administrators to allocate a “small fraction,” or nearly 28%, of the city’s rainy day fund for relief efforts, including:  $3 million ...
As the COVID-19 virus continues to spread throughout the Capital Region, Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) announced Tuesday that the Trump administration will consider Maryland a priority area, noting the extensive number of federal agencies that are based in the state. Additionally, U.S. officials have designated Baltimore City and Baltimore, Carroll, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Howard, Frederick, Harford, Queen Anne’s, Calvert, and Charles counties to be “hot spots.” “I want to sincerely thank the Trump administration for listening to our concerns, for responding to us and for designating the Baltimore-Washington corridor and these 12 Maryland jurisdictions as priority areas,” he said. Baltimore, MD - Apr. 7, 2020: Dear Baltimore Community,We are living through very difficult times right now.  Times like these present the opportunity to remind us that we should love one-another, and there is no room for hate.  Unfortunately, there are those in the minority who use difficult times as an excuse to express their hatred.  We have come across a photograph of a Maryland resident driving around with a hate-filled, anti-semitic sign.  This has startled many of us who have seen it and reminded us, on Erev Pesach, that there is hate out there. Upon coming across this photograph, I immediately brought it to the attention of the Maryland State Police, and they are taking it very seriously.  I have already received a follow-up from them advising me that ...
