WASHINGTON (AP) — Like forecasters tracking a megastorm, White House officials are relying on statistical models to help predict the impact of the coronavirus outbreak and try to protect as many people as possible.
The public could get its first close look at the Trump administration’s own projections Tuesday at the daily briefing.
High numbers of potential deaths estimated under different models have focused President Donald Trump’s attention. He’s dropped talk of reopening the country by Easter and instead called on Americans to stay home for another month and avoid social contact.
Such models are a standard tool of epidemiology, the branch of medicine that deals with how diseases spread and how to control them. But they’re really just fancy estimates, an...
RAMAT GAN (VINnews) — Emergency staff at Ramat Gan’s Tel Hashomer (Sheba) hospital have been directed to isolate patients arriving from Chareidi towns even if they do not exhibit symptoms of coronavirus due to the high rates of infection in these towns. Other hospitals are expected to adopt similar regulations, according to a Haaretz report.
Sheba hospital officials insisted that the isolation is not based on communal association but rather based on the rate of infection in the towns where patients come from. The towns mentioned included Bnei Brak, Elad and Modi’in Illit (Kiryat Sefer).
The new directive follows a similar directive in Ichilov and Sheba hospitals to separate between women from Chareidi communities who give birth and other women. Health officials say that...
FRIDLEY,MINN.(VINnews) — Medtronics, a Minnesota-based medical equipment company, has decided to publicly share the design specifications of its patent-protected Puritan Bennett 560 (PB 560) ventilator amid a global shortage of the devices due to the coronavirus pandemic. The shortage is dire enough that doctors are having to make life-or-death decisions about which people with severe cases of COVID-19 get to use a ventilator. Medtronic is running its ventilator production lines 24/7 with a goal of increasing production by 40%, but demand is still outstripping supply, according to a report by massdevice.com.
President Donald Trump has taken the extraordinary step of using the Korean War–era Defense Production Act to make a General Motors and Ventec Life Systems partnersh...
NEW YORK (VINnews) — Scientists have been pondering why in all countries affected by COVID-19, the mortality rate of men is significantly higher than that of women. In Italy, 70% of those who die from the virus are men, in China 64% and in all the other countries there is an average difference of at least 10% between the mortality rates of males and females.
“When we look at the data what we’re seeing is that in every country with sex-disaggregated data … there is between a 10 percent and 90 percent higher rate of mortality amongst people diagnosed with Covid-19 if they are men compared to if they are women,” Sarah Hawkes, professor of global public health at University College London (UCL), who is also a co-director at Global Health 50/50, which has analyse...
MOSCOW – The chief doctor of Moscow’s top hospital for coronavirus patients says he’s tested positive, a statement that comes a week after his encounter with President Vladimir Putin.
Putin visited the Kommunarka hospital a week ago and met with its chief doctor Denis Protsenko. The doctor says he’s feeling OK and self-isolated in his office.
There was no immediate comment from the Kremlin on whether Putin had undergone a coronavirus test following Protsenko’s announcement.
The president wore a business suit and shook hands with Protsenko before the meeting, drawing a buzz on social networks over his neglect of safety precautions.
Later that day, Putin put on a yellow protective suit and mask to visit the rooms with patients.
On Tuesday, Russia had 500 co...

While the COVID-19 coronavirus has so far been widely assumed to be mostly dangerous for the elderly, a new study conducted in the UK and published on Tuesday introduced another group of increased risk, with those aged 50 and up facing a higher probability of hospitalization and death.
The study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, confirmed that age was a major factor when it came to the prospect of a patient deteriorating to a serious condition.
While hospitalization rates for those aged over 80 stood at about 20 percent, people in their 50-s and 60-s required it in 8.2 percent of cases, while for patients up to 30 this rate stood only at one percent.
The study was based on a review of over 3,600 cases from China’s Wuhan and accounted for estimates of asymptomat...
Britain’s attempts to step up its testing for the novel coronavirus have suffered a setback after some key parts of the testing kits that were due to be imported were found to have been contaminated with the coronavirus. The Daily Telegraph reported that British labs have been told to expect a delay in the delivery some of the components of the kits after traces of the virus were detected on them. T
he British government has been criticized for its relatively low testing rates, which are way behind other wealthy nations like Germany, the United States, and South Korea. The government brought in foreign private firms to help produce thousands of kits, but it’s one of those suppliers—the Luxembourg-based firm Eurofins—that has told British labs that some of...
The Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation and Maintenance Center outside Tel Aviv produces Merkava tanks, builds command and control centers, and upgrades vehicles and communications systems for the army, Yisroel Hayom reports.
In recent days, however, the center’s assembly lines have been converted to help fight the war against the coronavirus.
The center’s commander, Col. Udi Amira, said the assembly line for manufacturing tank seats was repurposed to make protective goggles for medical crews and is now producing 1,400 protective goggles per day.
At an IDF vehicle factory in Haifa, one assembly line is refitting ambulances to protect their crews against the virus.
One of the factories is gearing up to manufacture ventilators made from medical equipment. Read m...
