(Reuters) - Macy’s Inc (M.N) said on Monday it would furlough most of its 130,000-strong workforce starting this week as all stores of the department chain operator have been temporarily shut due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Like many retailers, Macy’s has already said it would suspend quarterly dividend and withdrew its 2020 sales and profit forecasts in response to the uncertainty and financial hit from the store closures.
The company said on Monday the store closures had severely dented a majority of its sales, despite the online business staying up and running.
"We've already taken measures to maintain financial flexibility ... While these actions have helped, it is not enough," the company said in a statement here

Chief Rabbis of Israel issue letter stating except in case of infected newborn, there is no reason to postpone Brit Milah.
Israel Chief Rabbi David Lau and Rishon L'Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef today issued a letter stating there is no allowance to postpone a Brit Milah circumcision due to the coronavirus crisis.

U.S. equity markets locked in gains Monday as traders digested the news that social-distancing guidelines were extended until at least April 30 and as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reiterated details on how small businesses can obtain loans quickly in an interview on FOX Business.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 690 points or 3 percent. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite gained 3.3 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively. Last week, the Dow added 13 percent, making for its best week since 1938.

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Various Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program centers around Maryland have been converted into drive-through testing facilities for the coronavirus.
Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Monday free, appointment-only, drive-through testing for the coronavirus is now available at several vehicle emissions facilities around the state, including Waldorf, Bel Air and Glen Burnie.
"(We) have begun drive-through testing for COVID-19 at three motor vehicle emissions inspection stations," Hogan said.
The VEIP location on Ordnance Road in Glen Burnie had a soft opening Monday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
People pulled in to get checked in. Those who had approval from their doctor and an appointment then drove into the actual emissions garage for testing.

Governor Cuomo has renamed the Domestic Terror Hate Crime Legislation the “Josef Neumann Hate Crimes Domestic Terrorism Act” and called on State Legislature to pass it in State Budget by April 1.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Josef Neumann, who suffered brutal stab wounds after an attacker invaded the home of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg on the final night of Hanukkah three months ago,” Cuomo wrote in his statement.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made a statement on Monday, announcing significant stricter restrictions as part of the fight against the coronavirus.
“In our war on the coronavirus, we are not saving any effort. It is better to get stricter than to ease. Many countries have followed this policy. I will join the government tonight and my guideline is stricter traffic restrictions and expansion of economic benefits,” Netanyahu stated.

Pharmaceutical companies throughout the world are working around the clock to develop effective coronavirus treatments or a vaccine with no clear breakthroughs.
President Trump has spoken out about the importance of trying new treatments in hopes that we can learn where there's room for optimism and where there is not. He has touted drugs used in malaria cases as a possible response to the coronavirus and now the Food and Drug Administration put in place an emergency use authorization to try these drugs despite clear evidence of their effectiveness.

Annapolis, MD. — Mar. 30, 2020 - Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan issued a stay-home directive statewide amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The executive order takes effect at 8 p.m. Monday. Anyone who violates the order will be guilty of a misdemeanor of up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
"This virus is spreading rapidly and exponentially," Hogan said. "We are no longer asking or suggesting that Marylanders stay home, we are directing them to do so."
Hogan added: "No Marylander shall be leaving their home unless it is for an essential job or an essential reason such as obtaining food or medicine, seeking urgent medical attention or for other necessary purposes."
