Baltimore, MD - Mar. 25, 2020 - Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer, President of the Vaad HaRabbonim of Baltimore, explains that any one who made a kabalah yesterday to fast today, whether a half day or whole, should not fast due to the Coronavirus situation and the obligation upon everyone to maintain their strength and health. The kabala is considered a kabala bi'taus, a mistaken acceptance, as it was based on those who did not accurately translate or understand the letter from Rav Chaim, Shlita. The main mission now is Teshuva and Tefila, and not through fasting.May Hashem hear our Tefilos and bring Yeshuos to all of us.For further understanding see the letter, below.

Top Democrats are actively considering a range of contingency plans for the party's July convention, multiple top Democrats told CNN, including possibly shortening the in-person portion of the gathering or going entirely digital. The planning, a result of the coronavirus pandemic, is in its earliest stages and party officials said there is no deadline for convention organizers to begin to shift plans. But Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez and other top party officials have begun to solicit guidance from advisers about the future of the convention, Democrats told CNN. The decision to postpone this year's summer Olympics, announced Tuesday, put further pressure on convention planners. Democrats selected the mid-July date in an effort to pick a nominee before the inter...

In first, Knesset Speaker resigns, protesting Supreme Court ultimatum. 'Court's decision is gross interference, undermines democracy.' For the first time in Israeli history, the Knesset Speaker resigned in protest of a Supreme Court ruling obligating a vote in the plenary to elect the 23rd Knesset Speaker. Slamming the Supreme Court, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) said: "The Supreme Court of Justice decided that the Knesset Speaker must hold a vote this week to choose a new Knesset Speaker. The Supreme Court's decision is not based on the how the law is worded, but according to a one-sided and extremist interpretation." "The Supreme Court's decision contradicts the Knesset protocol. The Supreme Court's decision destroys the Knesset's work...
Transportation Min. Smotrich says public transportation will be reduced, but not eliminated, calls on public to use it only when necessary. Transportation Minister Bezalel Smotrich (Yamina) on Wednesday morning said that public transportation will not be eliminated entirely at this point, urging the public to use it only for permitted purposes. Following a six-hour government meeting, Smotrich said: "I am happy that common sense prevailed. As long as there are parts of the workforce which continue to work, whether it is the economic sector or social services, we need to provide public transportation services. We cannot decide that people can continue to work, but not allow them to reach their workplaces." "Public transportation will be reduced to the minimum necessary, and I call on t...

Senior administration officials have appealed to other countries for medical supplies in order to overcome the severe shortage in the nation’s hospitals. White House and Senate leaders reached a historic deal shortly after midnight Wednesday on a massive $2 trillion coronavirus relief package for workers and businesses, although support in the House of Representatives remained uncertain as one member openly criticized the plan. The bipartisan breakthrough in the Senate capped days of heated negotiations that had nearly been derailed by last-minute demands from House Democrats. “Ladies and gentleman, we are done," White House legislative affairs director Eric Ueland announced as he left the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., near midnight. "We have a deal." Ueland told reporters that "much of the work on bill text has been completed, and I’m hopeful over the ne...
Ahead of Pesach and deep into the coronavirus pandemic, Orthodox Jewish leaders and medical professionals in Florida have warned against an exodus of visitors from their homes to the Sunshine State to celebrate the Jewish holiday to visit family or stay at the all-inclusive Pesach hotel and resorts. In a letter to their communities late last week, 35 Orthodox Jewish leaders and nine medical professionals in Florida wrote, “To all those from out of state considering spending Pesach here in Florida: It’s halachically prohibited and medically irresponsible to come for Pesach.” Pesach begins on April 8 and ends at nightfall on April 16. The letter, first reported on Thursday by COLlive, mentions that Florida’s health-care system “is currently overburdened, and ...
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be delayed by a year in the first postponement since the modern games began in the 19th century, becoming the biggest global event to be disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach agreed to the unprecedented move in a telephone call Tuesday to delay the games that were set to begin in July. “The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will not be canceled,” Abe told reporters in Tokyo after the call, adding they will be held by the summer of 2021. The coronavirus pandemic has made it all but impossible for aspiring Olympians to train and, in many cases, qualify for a July event. Abe said he received 100% support from Bach to delay the international sports event...
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday it was seeing a “very large acceleration” in coronavirus infections in the United States which had the potential of becoming the new epicenter. Over the past 24 hours, 85 percent of new cases were from Europe and the United States, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters. Of those, 40 percent were from the United States. Asked whether the United States could become the new epicenter, Harris said: “We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the US. So it does have that potential. “…They (the United States) have a very large outbreak and an outbreak that is increasing in intensity,” Harris added. Overall, the global outbreak was accelerating very rapidly and she expected large inc...
Severely ill coronavirus patients will generate such costly hospital bills that it could drive up insurance premiums by double digits for tens of millions of Americans next year. That’s according to Peter Lee, director of California’s individual insurance marketplace, whose actuaries have estimated that medical care stemming from the virus could generate between $29 billion and $216 billion in hospital costs nationally for patients on employer-sponsored or individual market coverage, depending on the number of people ultimately infected. The report out of California – which, like a half-dozen other states,is allowing people special permission to sign up for Affordable Care Act plans during the pandemic – underscores yet another economic ripple effect of the virus:...
A quarter of Israelis infected with the coronavirus contracted it by going to shul, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday. According to the data, 24% of the patients were thus contaminated while going to the places of prayer, while 5% caught the virus in yeshivos. Other hotspots of contamination were hotels (15% of infections), restaurants (12%) and supermarkets (7%). In light of these figures, pressure has increased on the Chief Rabbinate of Israel to ban tefillos in the country’s shuls.
