The New York City Commission on Human Rights is launching a campaign to combat antisemitism. A wave of antisemitic attacks have struck the New York City area over the past year, including multiple assaults on Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn, a deadly shooting at a kosher market in Jersey City and a brutal stabbing spree in Monsey. In light of these events, the commission will run full-page ads describing laws against religious harassment and discrimination, as well as how to report antisemitic incidents, in the Orthodox and Hasidic newspapers Hamodia, Jewish Press and Mishpacha, as well as online. “Antisemitism has no place in New York City,” the text reads. “Religious harassment and discrimination is illegal in housing, the workplace, and in all public places,” it sa...
Andrew Yang, who ended his long-shot Democratic presidential bid last week, has joined CNN as a political commentator, the network announced Wednesday. Yang, who cultivated an army of devoted followers dubbed the “Yang Gang,” dropped out of the race a week after finishing in sixth place in the Iowa caucus, with less than 1 percent of the delegates. If this doesn’t knock him out of the race, nothing will. Not so easy to do what I did!” he added. Read more at THE HILL.

Committee investigating haredi recruitment data finds no increase in recruitment from 2014-2018. The findings of the investigation team led by Maj. Gen. (Res.) Roni Numa on the subject of faredi recruitment data for the IDF were presented yesterday (Wednesday) to Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi. Two months and a half ago, Numa was appointed by the chief of staff to head an external inspection team, in light of the gaps in the personnel division regarding the extent of recruitment of haredim to the IDF in recent years. The findings of the investigation team regarding the data counting and reporting process indicate, among other things, that the number of haredi recruits to the IDF from 2014-2018 does not meet the recruitment goals. In addition, the number of haredi recruits did not inc...
Israel Victory Project says lawyer for Tel Aviv Municipality compared Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh to Jewish child victims of the Holocaust. The Israel Victory Project, the organization responsible for the billboards of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in a position of surrender, has accused the Tel Aviv Municipality of Holocaust denial after its legal representative compared Haniyeh and Abbas to Jewish children in the Holocaust. The comparison was made in court on Thursday, in a court case brought by the Israel Victory Project after the Tel Aviv Municipality, at the direction of its mayor, Ron Huldai, ordered the billboards to be removed. “To compare the mass-murdering terrorist Ismail Haniyeh, head of a proudly genocidal orga...

Dagmar Turner wasn’t just showing off when she played the violin during her brain surgery at King’s College Hospital in London. Surgeons asked the 53-year-old to play her instrument to ensure that the professional violinist’s musical abilities were not damaged during a tumor removal. The tumor, in her right frontal lobe, was dangerously close to areas of her brain that were responsible for coordinating delicate movements in her left hand. These regions are crucial for playing the violin, and in some spots, their distance from the tumor was as narrow as a credit card. The surgery was successful and the patient was able to return home after a three day recuperation period. Turner plans to return to her orchestra once she fully recovers. Read more at CNN.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson has sentenced Trump ally Roger Stone to 40 months in prison. He was convicted last year on seven charges of obstruction, lying to Congress and witness tampering. Prosecutors initially asked for seven to nine years in prison — but Attorney General William Barr retracted that recommendation hours after Trump criticized it on Twitter for being too harsh. Four prosecutors withdrew from the case in response to Barr's decision. Two new DC US Attorney's Office supervisors stepped up to handle Stone's sentencing, and a new sentencing memo was released asking for "far less" time. Today, one of the new prosecutors said the Justice Department stands by the original sentencing memo and argued that "the court should impose a...
The black box of a Ukrainian passenger plane accidentally shot down over Iran last month is damaged but Iran will not hand it over to another country despite pressure for access, top Iranian ministers said on Wednesday, according to state media. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week he had “impressed upon” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif that a complete and independent investigation into the shooting down of the airliner had to be carried out. Many of the 176 who perished in the disaster were Iranians with dual citizenship, which is not recognized by Iran. Canada had 57 citizens on board. “We have a right to read the black box ourselves. We have a right to be present at any examination of the black box,” Zarif said. “If we are...

U.S. equity markets turned sharply lower Thursday midmorning as investors digested fresh comments from the Fed and rising fears over the coronavirus. The selling pushed the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite off record highs and clipped over 300 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average before giving back some of those losses. Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida told CNBC the market was too aggressive in pricing in a Fed rate cut later this year which investors including Keith Fitzgerald of Money Map Press cited as the catalyst for the sudden reversal in the equity markets. While globally, the People’s Bank of China cut its loan prime rate 10 basis points to 4.05 percent in a move designed to help cushion the Chinese economy from the damage caused by the...

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders almost challenged former President Barack Obama in 2012 and once chided him for negotiating with Republicans on core issues. Sanders, who is now running for president, reportedly told several people, including fellow Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, that he was frustrated with Obama’s performance in office and seriously considered challenging him in the 2012 Democratic primary. The Atlantic reports Leahy, concerned by Sanders’s comment, relayed the news to Obama’s campaign former campaign manager Jim Messina. The Obama campaign team “absolutely panicked” at Leahy’s disclosure, as Messina told it, as “every president who has gotten a real primary has lost a general [election].” Read more at Washington Examiner.
