NEW JERSEY (VINnews/Sandy Eller) – A 49 year old Ecuadorian grocery worker who died in the devastating attack on a kosher store in Jersey City is being remembered as an honorary member of the Jewish community and a hero today, paying the ultimate price while saving the life of a Chasidic resident. Miguel Douglas Rodriguez had just returned from vacation, starting his shift at Jersey City Kosher Market at noon on December 10th. Just over half an hour later, Chaim Deutch and his 24 year old cousin Moshe Deutch entered the store and, within moments, gunshots rang out. Seeing his cousin gunned down before his eyes, an injured Chaim Deutch ran for the back door finding Rodriguez steps ahead of him. Rodriguez held the door for Deutch to leave the store first, a selfless act that proved f...

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler late on Thursday night abruptly paused his committee’s debate on articles of impeachment before final votes until Friday morning, prompting howls of protest from Republicans after a marathon session that had stretched more than 14 hours. As the debate appeared to be winding down toward a final vote on the impeachment articles, Nadler announced that the committee would instead hold a final vote on the two articles Friday morning, and banged his gavel down. The hearing will resume at 10 a.m. EST Friday, allowing Democrats to hold a historic vote in the daytime instead of close to midnight. Republicans erupted in anger at the move, accusing the New York Democrat of wanting to put the vote on television and going back on an agreeme...
The deadly attack at a kosher supermarket here that left six people, including the two suspects, dead this week is being investigated as domestic terrorism, officials announced Thursday. “We believe the suspects held views that reflected hatred of the Jewish people, as well as the hatred of law enforcement,” New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said at a news conference. Officials said surveillance video indicated the market had been deliberately marked, raising the specter that the shooting was another in a growing national pattern of anti-Semitic attacks. “This confirms a sad truth; there is a crisis of anti-Semitism gripping this nation,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, said of the attack, which claimed the lives of two New York natives. Jeremy Corbyn announced his resignation as leader of the Labour party early Friday morning following the party's crushing defeat in the general election. Exit polls published on Thursday night predicted a solid majority for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative party with 368 seats in parliament. Corbyn’s Labour was projected to win just 191 seats, its worst showing since the 1930s. Corbyn said it was a “very disappointing night for the Labour Party,” and said he would not lead Labour into the next election, but would not step down immediately. He blamed Brexit for the result, and said the policies he put forward were the right ones and were popular. Corbyn has faced ongoing accusations of anti-Semitism, both over his history of hostility towards...
WUHAN, China — There’s nothing quite as satisfying as hitting the hay after a long day for some much-need shut eye. Similarly, a nice midday nap can be just what the doctor ordered in terms staying fresh and avoiding the afternoon doldrums. However, a new study finds that you may want to make sure you’re not sleeping too much too often. According to researchers from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, regularly taking naps that exceed 90 minutes, or sleeping for over 9 hours each night, may raise one’s chances of suffering a stroke. Researchers analyzed over 30,000 Chinese citizens, and discovered that those who took regular 90 minute-plus naps were 25% more likely to have a stroke than people who don&rsquo...

The 2019-2020 flu season follows two straight unusually bad flu seasons. Unfortunately, two key indicators show this year could be more of the same.  First, “This season is off to an early start, earlier than any season this decade,” Dr. Bryan Lewis, professor at the University of Virginia, who works in a research partnership with AccuWeather, wrote in an email. “You have to go back to 2003 before you have as much active transmission in early December as we have now.” Nationwide, 3.5 percent of patient visits reported through the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) were due to influenza-like illness (ILI). This percentage is above the national baseline of 2.4 percent for the fourth straight week, according to the Centers ...
Israeli Consul in New York Danny Dayan spoke to Arutz Sheva about his visit to Jersey City following the deadly shooting at a local kosher supermarket. Dayan described the scene of the attack. "It was a difficult visit and two things were etched in my memory and will remain there forever. One is the grocery store with bullets in every corner." "Not least, I will remember the second floor of the nearby synagogue. There is a yeshiva and Talmud Torah where 53 Jewish children gathered at the same time to study Torah. They were crammed into a small room far from the common wall with the supermarket. There, 53 children waited in terror so that G-d forbid the attack would not reach them while bullets whistled by on all sides. "The situation, of course, is different and ther...
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (VINnews) — Rabbi Lionel Mirvis, who passed away Monday in his Capetown home at the age of 93, became famous originally due to his developing unique methods of teaching Kabbalah, which he developed 50 years ago. Rabbi Mirvis, who is also the father of the current Chief Rabbi of Britain Ephraim Mirvis, taught Kabbalah based on the esoteric Sefer Yetzirah, a book attributed to Adam HaRishon. He later developed his method into graphic kabbalah, which he called, “the truth of the Torah, starting with the earliest, in Genesis, to the latest, in science”. He lectured widely on the subject, and produced a popular series of DVDs. His approach related to the modern world, his compelling thoughts and interpretations developed through a fusion of Talmudic, m...

A Chesed Fund campaign to benefit his widow, Laura, and their five orphaned children was launched on December 11th on The Chesed Fund platform, with contributions pouring in from as far away as Canada, Europe and Israel. 1417 ...
JERSEY CITY, NJ (AP ) – The deadly shooting rampage at a New Jersey kosher market has cast a spotlight on a fringe movement known for its anti-Semitic strain of street preaching and its role in a viral-video confrontation at the Lincoln Memorial this year. Investigators believe that the man and woman who killed three people at the Jersey City grocery Tuesday in addition to gunning down a police officer at a cemetery hated Jews and law enforcement and had expressed interest in the Black Hebrew Israelites movement, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said Thursday. “But we have not definitively established any formal links to that organization or to any other group,” he said. “Based on the available evidence, we believe that the two shooters were acting on the...
Polls have closed in the U.K.’s general election and a key BBC exit poll suggests Prime Minister Boris Johnson is on track for the parliamentary majority he has desperately sought to “get Brexit done.” Why it matters: If the results hold, Johnson will have far exceeded expectations and should be able to easily pass his Brexit deal. It would be the biggest Conservative majority since Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s 1987 victory, and a disaster for the opposition Labour Party and its leader, Jeremy Corbyn. By the numbers: Conservatives: 368 seats (+50)Labour: 191 (-71)Scottish National Party (SNP): 55 (+20)Liberal Democrats: 13 (+1)Brexit: 0 Between the lines: After 3 years of division over Brexit, Johnson appears to have united the “Leave” vot...

The leader of one of Israel’s smaller right-wing parties has been making it clear in sub rosa talks that after the next election, there will be no more right-wing “bloc.” According to the party leader, “It [the bloc] was the right move at the time. It was something that was important to do in order to prevent the rise of a left-wing government. But next time, it won’t happen.” If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once again fails to put together a government, said the party leader, the right-wing parties will have to consider “other options.” “We will not run as a bloc, hampering other political moves. If [Prime Minister] Netanyahu cannot put together a government, we won’t go back to what happened these past few months...
LONDON—An early exit polll suggests British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to win a large majority in Thursday’s general election, an outcome that would mark a stunning victory for the Brexit cheerleader and pave the way for the U.K. Parliament to trigger a long-awaited split with the European Union. The exit poll commissioned by three national broadcasters, released just after polling stations closed Thursday, said Mr. Johnson’s Conservative Party was on track to win 368 seats in Britain’s 650-seat House of Commons. The main opposition Labour Party was forecast to win 191, with smaller parties taking the rest. The poll asks roughly 30,000 people how they voted and has correctly forecast the outcome of two out of the last three elections and the 2016 Brexit...
The Simon Wiesenthal Center released its annual list of the top 10 global anti-Semitic incidents, along with anti-Semitic people, and the No. 1 spot was given to the Jeremy Corbyn-led British Labour Party. “No one has done more to mainstream anti-Semitism into the political and social life of a democracy than the Jeremy Corbyn-led Labour Party,” said the Simon Wiesenthal Center. “Members and staff who have dared to speak out against the hate were purged, but not those who declared ‘Heil Hitler.’” The list is normally published in late December or early January, but was released early this year, perhaps due to upcoming elections on Dec. 12, according to The Times of Israel. Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and found of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told Daily Ma...
Iran has foiled a major cyber attack on its infrastructure that was launched by a foreign government, the Iranian telecoms minister said on Wednesday, two months after reports of a US cyber operation against the country. US officials told Reuters in October that the United States had carried out a secret cyber strike on Iran after the Sept. 14 attacks on Saudi oil facilities, which Washington and Riyadh blamed on Tehran. Iran denied involvement in the attacks, which were claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. “We recently faced a highly organized and state-sponsored attack on our e-government infrastructure which was…repelled by the country’s security shield,” Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi, Iran’s minister for communications and information t...

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met with Jordanian parliamentarians and political activists and spoke with them about Hamas’ position regarding Jordan. The Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper reported that Haniyeh stressed that the Palestinian Arabs stand alongside Jordan against the idea of establishing an alternative Palestinian homeland in Jordan, against the settlement of “refugees” in Jordan and against any Israeli idea of resolving the conflict outside the borders of “Palestine”. Jordan is a red line, Haniyeh said, noting that all of Hamas’ energy is directed at the “enemy” and that the Palestinians and Jordanians are in the same boat on the main issues.
