A senior adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said last week that it was “not possible” for the Islamic world to give up on Jerusalem, and called for the creation of an Islamic “army for Palestine.” Retired Turkish general Adnan Tanriverdi, the founder of Turkish security firm SADAT International Defense Consulting and a chief adviser to Erdoğan, made the remarks during a speech at the “International Israel Ethnic Discrimination Conference: Dimensions, Applications, And Methods Of Struggle,” which took place on Nov. 29-30 at the Mariott Hotel in Istanbul. In his speech, Tanriverdi “emphasized that it was not possible for the Islamic world to give up on Jerusalem,” and said that “Israel governed 85 percent of Palestinian...
As many as 1,050 Hezbollah members and supporters reside in Germany, and the organization uses the country as a major hub for its activities, German daily Tagesspiegel reported last week, citing security sources. The Lebanese Shi’ite terrorist group’s operations in Europe include drug-trafficking, with the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg serving as the main entry points, according to the report. The sources also said that Hezbollah engages in money-laundering, recruitment and fundraising on the continent, and sends the money it raises in these ways to Lebanon to buy weapons and fund the group’s operations, according to Tagesspiegel. Around 30 mosques and culture centers in Germany have ties to Hezbollah, the report said. According to a report last Thursday in G...
Walmart apparently accidentally posted job listings that it is looking for cashiers, merchandise stockers, pharmacists and food handlers in Jerusalem. The listings, however, were for the retail chain’s stores in the Illinois towns of Salem and Zion. “We are working to clarify the discrepancy,” a spokesperson told Calcalist, which reported in March that Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and a group of senior executives were in Israel to discuss the possibility of opening a location in the Jewish state. Walmart has invested in Israeli startups and recently acquired Israeli startup Aspectiva Ltd. In October, the retailer said it would invest reportedly $300 million in “interactive multimedia video creation and distribution firm Eko” to create “an original inter...
A group of Israeli deputy mayors seeking to visit Petra was reportedly stopped at the Israel-Jordan border on Tuesday and refused entry over their religious attire. The group, which included religious and ultra-Orthodox deputy mayors who were attending a conference in Israel’s southern resort city of Eilat, arrived at the border crossing at around 7:30 a.m. For security reasons, they had agreed to replace their kippot with hats for the duration of the visit, but when they arrived at the Jordanian side of the border they were refused entry because some of them were wearing tzitzis under their clothes. “During the first security check, we were told [by Jordanian border security] to take off our kippot and put hats on instead,” Givatayim Deput...

Fire officials said the first fire broke out around 11 p.m. Sunday and several others were reported into Monday evening. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s U.S.-focused foreign policy efforts suffered a severe setback on Monday when his American counterpart Donald Trump pledged to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum on the South American nation. Trump initially leveled the threat by Twitter while accusing Brazil and neighboring Argentina, governed by U.S. allies Bolsonaro and Mauricio Macri, of manipulating their currencies and hurting American farmers. Brazil’s vice president denied the accusation, but Bolsonaro, who openly admires Trump, was reticent; the far-right politician said he could call Trump “if needed.” Argentina’s production and labor minister, Dante Sica, said Trump’s announcement caught policymakers by surprise. Both South Ameri...
BERLIN (AP) — Jewish groups expressed outrage on Tuesday at an oversized urn placed in front of the German parliament that those behind it claim contains Holocaust victims’ remains and is meant to highlight the dangers of far-right extremism. The International Auschwitz Committee condemned the action by the Center for Political Beauty, which unveiled the urn near the Reichstag building Monday, calling it a “pillar of resistance.” “Auschwitz survivors are aghast at this installation, which hurts their feelings and the eternal peace of the dead of their murdered relatives,” the organization said. The Center for Political Beauty, a Germany-based activist group known for provocative stunts, said the urn contained victims’ remains that it had unearth...
LONDON (AP) — President Donald Trump appeared to downplay the chances for a deal to end the U.S.-China trade war before the end of the year. Speaking in London he is attending a NATO summit, Trump said Tuesday that the only limiting factor to reaching an agreement with China is whether he wants to make a deal. Asked about his previous goal of reaching an agreement by years’ end, Trump told reporters, ”I have no deadline, no.” “In some ways I like the idea of waiting until after the election,” Trump added. He has previously suggested that China wanted to wait until after the election to negotiate a deal. Tensions between the two nations flared anew last week after Trump signed legislation expressing U.S. support for pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Allan Gerson, a lawyer who pursued Nazi war criminals and pioneered the practice of suing foreign government in U.S. courts for complicity to terrorism has died at the age of 74. Gerson died Sunday at his home in Washington, D.C., from complications of the degenerative brain disorder Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, his wife, author Joan Nathan, said, according to The Washington Post. Gerson wrote an opinion piece for the newspaper in 2017 in which he detailed his lengthy legal career and identified himself as a former “dreamer,” drawing a parallel between his undocumented entry into the United States and those of immigrants currently targeted by the Trump administration. A deputy assistant attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, Gerson was also a c...
Attorney General William Barr has told associates he disagrees with the Justice Department’s inspector general on one of the key findings in an upcoming report – that the FBI had enough information in July 2016 to justify launching an investigation into members of the Trump campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. The Justice Department’s inspector general, Michael Horowitz, is due to release his long-awaited findings in a week, but behind the scenes at the Justice Department, disagreement has surfaced about one of Horowitz’s central conclusions on the origins of the Russia investigation. The discord could be the prelude to a major fissure within federal law enforcement on the controversial question of investigating a presidential campaign. Barr has...
British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Sunday that if his party controls Parliament in the United Kingdom following elections on Dec. 12, Israel would no longer receive arms from Great Britain. Such a move would add to the leader’s and his party’s clear animosity towards and bias against the Jewish state. “Labour’s new internationalism means we will create a peace and conflict-prevention fund and invest an extra 400 million pounds [$513 million] to expand our diplomatic capacity and increase oversight of arms exports to ensure we’re not fueling conflicts, as in Yemen and in Israel and the Palestinian territories,” he said in a speech outlining his party’s foreign-policy goals. A recent poll found that 87 percent of British Jews consid...
Baltimore City Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young warned residents of abductions for human trafficking and other things, but police are disputing it. Young told WBAL-TV 11's Vanessa Herring, "We're getting reports of somebody in a white van trying to snatch up young girls for human trafficking and for selling body parts." He went on to say the reports are all over Facebook and, "that's something that our police officers are aware of because it's been reported," according to Herring. Young warned residents to look out and not to park next to a white van. However, a Baltimore Police Department spokesman told Herring the department does know of the social media postings, but they do not have any actual reported incidents. A spokesman for the mayor's office then told Her...
A leading Orthodox rabbi from Israel was reported on Monday to be “shocked and traumatized” after he was subjected to a vicious antisemitic assault by two men in the Stamford Hill area of north London while walking from Shabbos davening at a local shul. Details of Friday night’s assault on the unnamed rabbi were disclosed by the head of a group that provides security to the Jewish community, during an interview on Monday with the Hackney Gazette newspaper. The rabbi “had been walking home at 9:45 p.m. when he was attacked by two young men,” Rabbi Hershel Gluck — the chair of the Shomrim organization in Stamford Hill, which is home to a large Orthodox Jewish community — told the paper. “He said to them he didn’t have any money, or a p...
Attorney General Avichai Mandelbilt officially delivered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s indictment to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein on Monday. The document specifies which court Netanyahu must report to, and includes a list of witnesses the prosecution plans to call to the stand. In all three cases in which he is a suspect—cases 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000—Netanyahu is charged with fraud and breach of trust (under Israeli law “fraud and breach of trust” is one count). In Case 4,000, Netanyahu also faces a bribery charge. In Case 1,000, Netanyahu is accused of receiving gifts worth over $200,000 from friends over an extended period, while Case 2,000 and Case 4,000 both involve alleged attempts by Netanyahu to secure positive media coverage in exchan...
The Senate Intelligence Committee found no evidence in 2017 that Ukraine orchestrated a systematic effort to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, Politico reported Monday, citing people with direct knowledge of the investigation. In the wake of Russia’s election meddling, the GOP-led Intelligence Committee reportedly looked into the theory, recently resurfaced by allies of President Trump, that Kyiv also sought to influence the 2016 vote. But the panel halted the probe in the fall of 2017 after an interview with Alexandra Chalupa, a Democratic consultant linked to the Ukraine meddling allegations, bore no significant information, Politico reported. Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.), reportedly made no other interview requests related to the issue. Read more at The Hill.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful and obvious time to stop and say “Thank You” to some very important people whom we don’t often recognize — our local firefighters. After all, rather than spending Thanksgiving at home with their family and friends, those hard-working heroes spend that day on duty, keeping our neighborhood safe. Sharing some Shul-made pies and Thanksgiving cards with our local firefighters on Thanksgiving is a great way to express our Hakaras HaTov / appreciation. Young Israel of Memphis thanks the many children and parents who joined together at Shul on Sunday morning, November 24th to create appreciative cards, and prepare / bake ten mouth-watering pumpkin and sweet potato pies. Taking part in these activities was also a fun and meaningful activity for ...

Over the next week you will likely be experiencing one of the most dramatic periods in American history. This week the House impeachment “hearing” on President Trump, of course, will still be going on. And the president’s lawyers have said they will not cooperate. Then Monday, Dec. 9, is when the long-awaited, long-debated report by the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz is going to be released. That will be followed by an appearance by Horowitz in front of the Senate two days later. What’s at stake? Probably as much economically as on the political side. For one thing, business in Washington has come to a screeching halt in recent months. A lot of people would say that Washington works best when nothing is done, but right now there are ec...
