Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, director on the National Security Council, takes issue with California Congressman Devin Nunes, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee.
Texas Representative Mike Conaway upbraided Intel Committee Chair Adam Schiff over his position on keeping the whistleblower’s identity anonymous.
The White House Press secretary Stephanie Grisham made the claim that aides to former President Barack Obama left behind disparaging messages around the White House on the day President Donald Trump was inaugurated. During a radio interview Tuesday, Grisham said that White House aides left “Obama books” throughout the White House and taped a big ‘You will fail’ sign on the door of the press office before Trump aides moved in – claims that sparked a chorus of condemnation from former Obama administration officials. “This is another bald faced lie,” Susan Rice, who was serving as Obama’s national security adviser through the end of his administration, wrote Tuesday on Twitter in response to Grisham’s initial remarks. “This is abs...
Democratic White House hopeful Pete Buttigieg surged to a 10-point lead in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary, according to a new Saint Anselm College poll released Tuesday. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) sits in third place at 9 percent. Read more at The Hill.
Republicans sounded a celebratory note as Democrats' House impeachment inquiry began wrapping up another day of public hearings on Tuesday evening, saying the day's witnesses had served only to repeatedly highlight fundamental problems in the case against President Trump. “Did anyone ever ask you to bribe or extort anyone at any time during your time in the White House?" House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., asked at one point in Tuesday's hearing. Former National Security Council aide Tim Morrison: "No." U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker: “No." Later, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., hit the same notes in asking the witnesses about Trump's fateful July 25 call with Ukraine...
WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal safety officials say Boeing should redesign part of the casing on some engines to prevent the kind of accident that occurred when engine debris blew out a window on a Southwest Airlines plane and killed a passenger. The National Transportation Safety Board determined Tuesday that the April 2018 accident was caused by a cracked fan blade that broke off in flight, hitting the engine case at a critical location. Parts of the engine turned into shrapnel, striking the fuselage. After a harrowing emergency descent from 32,000 feet, with one passenger blown partly out of the plane, the pilots of Southwest flight 1380 were able to land the crippled Boeing 737 in Philadelphia. Safety board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said engine and aircraft manufacturers should devel...
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — In the unlikely setting of the world’s most populated military installation, amid all the regimented chaos, you’ll find the Endangered Species Act at work. There, as a 400-pound explosive resounds in the distance, a tiny St. Francis Satyr butterfly flits among the splotchy leaves, ready to lay as many as 100 eggs. At one point, this brown and frankly dull-looking butterfly could be found in only one place on Earth: Fort Bragg’s artillery range. Now, thanks in great measure to the 46-year-old federal act, they are found in eight more places — though all of them are on other parts of the Army base. And if all goes well, biologists will have just seeded habitat No. 10. One of Earth’s rarest butterfly species, there are maybe 3,000...
OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) — An Air Force base south of Omaha has been dedicated as the new, $1.3 billion headquarters for the command unit that, under direction of the president, controls the nation’s nuclear-armed forces. Officers and enlisted men joined civilian dignitaries for ceremonies Monday at Offutt Air Force Base. The facility is named the Gen. Curtis E. LeMay Building. LeMay headed what was then known as the Air Force’s Strategic Air Command until 1957 when he left to take a Pentagon post. Strategic Air Command eventually became a multiservice unit under a new name: the U.S. Strategic Command, or StratCom. Work on the 916,000-square-foot (85,000-square-meter) command and control center began in October 2012. Contractors worked through several setbacks,...
LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Boris Johnson and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn squared off Tuesday in the first live televised debate of Britain’s election, each trying to spark a lackluster campaign to life. The hour-long encounter — the first-ever head-to-head TV debate between a British prime minister and a chief challenger — offers Corbyn a chance to make up ground in opinion polls, which show his Labour Party trailing Johnson’s Conservatives ahead of the Dec. 12 election. For Johnson, it’s a chance to shake off a wobbly start that has seen the Conservatives thrown on the defensive by candidates’ gaffes and favoritism allegations involving Johnson’s past relationship with an American businesswoman. Speaking in front of a live audience ...
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met on Tuesday evening at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem with Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz, who holds the mandate to form the government. The meeting, which is considered crucial, began only 25 and a half hours before the expiry of the mandate given by the President to Gantz to form the government. It concluded around 11:30 p.m. Israel time after approximately one hour, without a breakthrough. Gantz said at the conclusion of the meeting with Netanyahu: "At the start of the meeting today, I said once again, as I have said since entering the political field, that Israel needs a broad and liberal unity government composed primarily of the two major political parties, led by Blue and White which won the elections.” “A uni...

BERLIN (AP) — German special police forces arrested a Syrian man in a raid on his apartment Tuesday after receiving intelligence from American officials that he was planning an extremist attack, authorities said. The 26-year-old “radical Islamist” was planning an attack in Germany designed to “kill and injure a maximum number of people,” federal prosecutors said in a statement. The Syrian, whose name wasn’t given, came to Germany in 2014 as an asylum seeker and had been living in the country with “protected” status, said Martin Steltner, a spokesman for Berlin state prosecutors. The suspect had obtained information online on how to build bombs and talked about planning an attack in internet chats, and an “allied foreign intelligence ...

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman pushed for a change to the U.S. position on the legality of Israeli settlements early in the Trump administration, but former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson opposed the move. This according to Channel 13 News correspondent Barak Ravid. Friedman, the key driver behind the major policy shift, raised the issue again when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came in. This time he got a "green light," U.S. officials told Ravid. State Department deliberations on the legal status of Israeli settlements lasted a year. A special team was formed that consisted of Friedman and department lawyers led by the State Department’s then-chief legal advisor Jennifer Newstead, who is now the general counsel of Facebook. During that year, the U.S. team he...
NEW YORK (AP) — The kombucha and beer on tap flow freely. The milk-and-cookie happy hours, yoga sessions and waffle Mondays continue as usual. WeWork’s stock market fiasco has yet to reverberate much for its more than 600,000 tenants, spread across a global empire of gracefully designed co-working offices. But beneath the work-and-play cheer, there’s unease as WeWork embarks on a painful restructuring that will include thousands of layoffs as early as this week. WeWork is slashing the lavish spending that fueled the office-sharing company’s breakneck growth while racking up unsustainable losses that ultimately turned off Wall Street investors, forcing it to shelve its initial public offering. Shannon Wilkinson, CEO of a small online reputation management firm, sa...
JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In a trip to Israel organized by the Jewish Agency’s educational arm Israel Experience and France’s United Jewish Social Fund in Israel (FSJU), 80 French Holocaust survivors got the chance to do something they had not done before. Celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Jacques Innedjian, a survivor in his late 80s told The Jerusalem Post that it was difficult to describe his feelings in the moment. “It’s a feeling that is shaking my entire body,” he said, showing his arm with a number tattooed on it. “This number was my mother’s number – it’s the only thing I have left of her. I tattooed her number onto my arm so that she will be with me wherever I go.” He went on to explain that he is a victim of two geno...
