JERUSALEM (AP) – The Israeli Cabinet has approved hard-line politician Naftali Bennett as defense minister in the country’s caretaker government.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Bennet, with whom he has a rocky relationship, last week.
Netanyahu appears to be trying to shore up support among his right-wing base. He’s hoping to block attempts by his chief rival, Benny Gantz, to form Israel’s next government.
The Cabinet voted Sunday for Bennett to become defense minister until a permanent government takes hold.
Gantz is in the process of trying to cobble together a majority coalition after inconclusive elections in September. Netanyahu had the first try at forming a government, but failed.

LAKEWOOD (VosIzNeias) — The Enclave, an upscale age-restricted community in Lakewood, New Jersey, has been ordered to pay some $86,000 in attorney fees incurred by Orthodox Jewish residents who sued the organization for religious discrimination in a 2017 case, a judge ruled.
Seven months ago, the plaintiffs and the Fairway Homeowners Association struck a deal to unlock a pedestrian gate locked on Shabbat and other holy days and make other changes integral to Jewish life at the 55-and-over community.
U.S. Chief District Judge Freda L. Wolfson has now ruled that the February settlement and consent order entitled the Jewish plaintiffs to “prevailing party” status and attorney fees as opposed to ordinary litigants who pay for their own counsel.

A Twitter message posted Saturday by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has revived accusations of anti-Semitism against the freshman congresswoman and member of the far-left “Squad.”
The remark, posted ahead of Omar’s scheduled appearance at a CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations) event in Washington, also drew a response from tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who accused Omar of “assigning labels.”
Omar’s defenders, however, claimed that charges of anti-Semitism against her were overblown, and that Omar’s critics were “obsessed with every word Ilhan says or tweets.”

An Israeli plan to run a cable car over Yerushalayim to the walls of the Old City has angered Palestinians who say it would erase their heritage in areas they seek for a future state.
The proposed cable car would shuttle some 3,000 tourists and worshipers per hour from Yerushalayim’s western section to the Old City in a four-minute ride. The plan moved forward this week when a special committee headed by Israel’s finance minister gave it a green light.
The government says the roughly 220 million shekel ($63 million) scheme will alleviate heavy traffic to the area, which packs out with tourists and residents visiting its many Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious sites.

A group of neighborhood youths went on an egging spree on Motzei Shabbos around Dahill Road in Boro Park, hitting multiple Jewish buildings.
The targets included a shul, a girls’ school, a bus, and multiple residences.
One incident caught on surveillance footage occurred at Khal Bnei Torah Sanz on Dahill Rd, near Cortelyou Rd and 37th St, shortly after Shabbos while mispalelim were still present.
Multiple security cameras captured the group passing the shul and pausing to taunt the people inside. When the shul’s door was opened, they hurled an egg as they made their escape. Shomrim was called and arrived shortly thereafter on the scene. Another location that was targeted nearby was the Belzer girls’ school.

Israel’s Supreme Court of Justice has approved the extradition of Russian hacker, Alexei Burkov, to the US, rejecting his request to either be extradited or to serve his potential jail time in Russia.
Last month the justice ministry finalized the extradition of Alexei Burkov, who has been held in Israeli custody since 2015, without providing a date.
Burkov appealed the decision to the supreme court, asking that he be sent to Moscow, or that his extradition to the US be conditioned on him serving any future prison term in Russia.
They noted that the decision to extradite him was made “after a deep and exhaustive examination of all the considerations”.

Iran is acknowledging for the first time it has an open case before its Revolutionary Court over the 2007 disappearance of former FBI agent Robert Levinson, The Associated Press reported Saturday.
In a filing to the United Nations, Iran said the case over Levinson was “ongoing,” without elaborating. It was not immediately clear how long the case had been open, nor the circumstances by which it started.
Levinson vanished in Iran in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission and remains missing. In the past, Iran insisted that Levinson is not in the country and that it has no further information about him.

Israel’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Uri Ariel submitted his resignation on Sunday.
In his letter of resignation, Ariel wrote to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “Hope and pray that the next Minister of Agriculture, together with you, will continue to promote farmers and agriculture to the glory of the State of Israel.”
Ariel has served in his position since 2015, and as a member of Knesset (Israeli Parliament) since 2001.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog attended a Thursday-night memorial service at the synagogue in Halle, Germany, which one month ago was the target of an anti-Semitic attack on Yom Kippur.
Unable to enter the synagogue thanks to recently installed security cameras, doors and locks sponsored by the Jewish Agency’s Security Assistance Fund and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the attacker killed two non-Jewish passersby in the vicinity as 60 worshippers were on lockdown in the synagogue for five hours.

ORLEANS COUNTY, NY (AP) – Three middle-school students have been charged with plotting to kill multiple people at their upstate New York school with guns and explosives, authorities said Friday.
The Albion Middle School students were arrested Thursday after investigators determined a threat that started on an online gaming app was credible, Albion Police Chief Roland Nenni said by phone.
The students, all under 16 years old, are charged as juveniles with conspiracy to commit multiple murders, he said. Their names and ages weren’t released.

JERUSALEM (JNS) — NATO has recognized the Israeli Navy as a key medical-assistance partner in the Mediterranean following a drill held last month practicing emergency evacuations of personnel.
During the drill, dubbed “Crystal Sea 2020” and held on Oct. 31, NATO vessels from the United Kingdom, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria simulated medical emergencies at sea with the Israeli Navy.

TikTok, a lip-synching app that boasts over 500 million users worldwide, has been downloaded over 110 million times in the US alone. UNITED NATIONS (AP) – U.N. rights experts say Egypt’s ex-President Mohammed Morsi endured “brutal” prison conditions that contributed to his death in custody.
They also warn that thousands more prisoners are “at severe risk” from “gross violations” in Egyptian prisons. Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, was from the Islamist, now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. He was ousted by the military in 2013, after protests. He’d been jailed for six years until his death in a Cairo court while on trial.

Once a staunch pro-Israel Illinois congressman between 2011 and 2013, Joe Walsh launched this past summer a long-shot Republican primary challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump, whom many have deemed to be the most pro-Israel figure ever in the White House.

Avigdor Liberman, chief of Yisrael Beiteinu party, told Channel 12 on Saturday he was willing to back whoever would sign up to President Rivlin’s unity plan, whether it is Likud or Blue and White.
He said he would call on Prime Minister-designate Benny Gantz to accept the compromise on rotation and urge interim Prime Minister Netanyahu break the ties with the religious-right bloc.
