The centrist Blue and White and secular-nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu parties have reached preliminary agreements on several issues in ongoing coalition talks, amid Israel’s ongoing political stalemate. The Israeli news site Mako reported that, with only 13 days left for Blue and White leader Benny Gantz to form a government, the negotiating teams for the two parties reached a consensus on several economic issues, including raising income for the elderly and disability payments. There was nothing conclusive, however, on the most important issue — that of religion and state. However, Blue and White said the two parties had agreed on the issue in principal during previous meetings. Yisrael Beiteinu, which won eight seats in the second round of elections in September, may hold t...
BALTIMORE — Comments made Thursday by the medical examiner and the Baltimore City state's attorney are casting doubt on the suicide finding in the investigation into Detective Sean Suiter's death. Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison on Wednesday wrote in a statement that the case is closed. But when asked about it Thursday, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said, "The one thing that I can tell you is that, with all open and pending matters, I cannot ethically comment on them. So I can tell you that it is an open and pending matter that, unfortunately, I am unable to comment on." Suiter was found shot in the head on Nov. 15, 2017, in a vacant lot on Bennett Place in west Baltimore. Suiter was investigating a homicide and had been set ...
Israel’s election impasse doesn’t appear to be waning as the country is closing in on nearly two months since its second national election in September. In the past several days, various reports have emerged and faded over proposals to break the logjam, which have led to more discussion over the possibility of an unprecedented third election in less than a year. Likud Knesset member Keti Sheetrit, who has been close with Benjamin Netanyahu for years, insists that the prime minister does not want a third election, but that he does want to be remain in the job as part of a unity government. “Sadly, the ‘Just not Bibi’ campaign has continued beyond the election and into the coalition negotiations,” Sheetrit told JNS. “The other side is willing to j...
An Italian Jewish survivor of the Auschwitz extermination camp was under the protection of police officers on Thursday after she received hundreds of death threats on social media from far-right fanatics. 89-year-old Liliana Segre — a life senator in the Italian parliament — had called on fellow legislators to establish a committee to combat racist and antisemitic hatred. Italy’s right-wing and nationalist parties — including former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party — all abstained on the vote. After the vote, Segre — who was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 13 — said that the abstentions made her feel “like a Martian in the Senate.” “I appealed to the conscience of everyone and thought that a commi...
The Israeli government should establish a non-military social media office, former Israeli military spokesman Ronen Manelis said Tuesday at the Institute for National Security Studies’ (INSS) National Security and Strategic Communications Conference held Thursday in Tel Aviv. During times of turmoil such as a war, the military spokesperson’s unit will not have time to reach out to civilians and tell them to remain calm, Manelis said. “It is not even a question, the government should establish an office with the explicit purpose of addressing civilians through social media,” he said. “There needs to be a spokesperson unit that has no relation to the Israeli military.” Investing in social media is cheaper and more efficient than other means, Manelis said...

New scrutiny surrounding the attorney for the Ukraine whistleblower.
Suspects in Friday nights spree of antisemetic attacks have been arrested, Boro Park Shomrim reports. President Trump on Thursday called for former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter to testify as the president sought to deflect allegations of wrongdoing in Ukraine toward the Democratic presidential candidate. Trump parroted a quote from Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) asking what Hunter Biden does to earn money, tweeting that it was a “very good question.” “He and Sleepy Joe must testify!” Trump tweeted, using a nickname to refer to the former vice president. Neither of the Bidens are likely to testify in the House impeachment inquiry. While Republicans have the power to request a subpoena of witnesses, those requests are subject to approval by Democrats leading the investigation. Read more at The Hill.
A Baltimore police spokesman on Friday aimed to reconcile the gap between Police Commissioner Michael Harrison's Wednesday statement that the investigation into Detective Sean Suiter's death was closed and State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's Thursday statement that the investigation remained "open and pending." "The State’s Attorney and Commissioner Harrison have agreed that there are a small number of tasks to complete in this case," police spokesman Matt Jablow said in a statement. "The Commissioner respects the process and, as a result, BPD is proceeding with those tasks." Nearly two years ago, Suiter died after he ran into a vacant lot in Harlem Park, purportedly in pursuit of a suspicious individual and was shot in the head with his own ser...

Two months on, most Israeli sellers feel cheated and dissatisfied after the e-commerce giant offered business counseling and advised them to ready their stocks for an influx of customers that never came Israeli sellers invested up to hundreds of thousands of shekels starting a store on Amazon, but two months since the site's official launch in Israel, traffic is low, sales are few, and Amazon is failing in keeping its promises. Baltimore, MD - Nov. 7, 2019 - 10 MarCheshvan - My late wife, Debra Rachel Friedman, a”h, was special in so many ways.  She loved the Torah and those who study it, she was modest and caring, G-d fearing and devout.  She was honest and hardworking yet possessed an infectious smile.  When she was taken from this world, while the sanctity of Yom Kippur was still within her, it sent a shock wave through the Jewish world.  How could this happen to such a wonderful person? My Rov, Rav Abba Zvi Naiman, shlita, remarked at the levayah that surely, she was a sacrifice to atone for us, a korban olah!  That seemed like hyperbole to me.  My wife, in her modesty, never thought of herself, as being anything special.  However, in the subsequent hours and days, I ...
President Trump on Thursday lashed out at New York’s Democratic attorney general, accusing Letitia James of “deliberately mischaracterizing” a settlement in a lawsuit involving his charity for “political purposes.” “I am the only person I know, perhaps the only person in history, who can give major money to charity ($19M), charge no expense, and be attacked by the political hacks in New York State. No wonder why we are all leaving!” Trump said in a statement issued on Twitter Thursday evening. “Every penny of the $19 million raised by the Trump Foundation went to hundreds of great charitable causes with almost no expenses. The New York Attorney General is deliberately mischaracterizing this settlement for political purposes,” the pres...
Sen. Bernie Sanders’s campaign responded to reports of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s possible 2020 Democratic presidential bid by expressing that the contest does not need more billionaires. “More billionaires seeking more political power surely isn’t the change America needs,” Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir told The Hill in a statement on Thursday. The Vermont senator tweeted that “the billionaire class is scared and they should be scared.” Read more at The Hill.
BERLIN (JNS) — It’s been 81 years since Kristallnacht (“The Night of Broken Glass”), when Nazis torched synagogues, vandalized thousands of Jewish homes, schools and businesses, and killed hundreds of Jews on the night of Nov. 9-10, 1938 in what was a precursor of things to come in Germany. In the aftermath, some 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps. On Thursday morning at the Central Orthodox Synagogue of Berlin, Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog lit a yahrzeit candle in memory of those who were brutally tortured and killed in the urban pogrom. Together, Herzog and the rabbi of the Berlin synagogue, Yitshak Ehrenberg, then recited the mourner’s Kaddish in remembrance of those systematically murdered in Holocaust. “This Sh...
Iran has prevented a United Nations nuclear inspector from entering a uranium-enrichment facility and revoked her credentials after Iranian officials said she tested positive for explosive nitrates. The move drew condemnation from the United States, which called Iran’s decision to expel the inspector an “outrageous provocation.” A spokesman for the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, confirmed that one of its inspectors was “temporarily prevented from leaving Iran” last week. “The Agency does not agree with Iran’s characterization of the situation involving the inspector, who was carrying out official safeguard duties in Iran,” said Fredrik Dahl, the agency’s spokesman. “Preventing an inspector from l...
Despite supporting the idea of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for over three decades, former vice president and 2020 hopeful Joe Biden abandoned his previous stance on the issue and said he wouldn't have made the move "in the first place." In an interview with PBS News Hour on Friday, Biden said that although he would not reverse President Trump's decision to move the embassy at this point, he said: "I wouldn't have done it in the first place." A person close to Biden's campaign told Fox News on Thursday that Biden's comments are "not out of synch with the position that he's had" but rather are a criticism of the way Trump handled the decision, which drew the ire of Palestinians who also stake claim to the lan...
WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior State Department official offered some of the most pointed testimony to date in the ongoing impeachment inquiry, alleging that President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani led a “campaign of slander” against the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, according to an interview transcript released by House investigators Thursday. George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary for European and Euroasian affairs, said he was largely sidelined on Ukraine policy by Trump’s inner circle as Giuliani spearheaded a campaign to pressure Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s dealings in the Eastern European nation. Kent, a 27-year veteran of the foreign service, deta...
