Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Thursday released a sweeping immigration plan that would impose a moratorium on deportations, “break up” existing immigration enforcement agencies, grant full welfare access to illegal immigrants and welcome a minimum of 50,000 “climate migrants” in the first year of a Sanders administration.
The plan effectively establishes Sanders at the far left of the immigration debate, as he aims to energize a base that helped drive his 2016 primary campaign amid competition from other liberal candidates in the field this time around.

On Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio came to the defense of a city program that critics say will reward criminal behavior.
The incentive program would give accused criminals – being released from jail under the city’s new cashless bail policy – things like New York Mets tickets and gift cards for showing up to court.
Critics say the program rewards criminal behavior, but de Blasio is optimistic the plan will work.
“In a world where we want speedier trials and we want the justice system to work, if small incentives are part of what actually makes it work, then that’s a smart policy,” he said Wednesday.

QUEENS, N.Y. - A large armored personnel carrier operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security rumbled into a Queens neighborhood Wednesday morning, alarming local residents.
A NY1 viewer took the photo, seen above, on Forest Ave near Norman Street in Ridgewood.
A federal source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the military-style vehicle, known as a BearCat, was being used by a Homeland Security Special Response Team to arrest a criminal suspect. The source said the "target has been taken into custody."
The source repeatedly declined to comment on why the individual was apprehended but said the investigation did not involve an immigration issue.

German airline Lufthansa grounded 1,300 flights Thursday due to thousands of its flight attendants going on strike.
UFO, the airline's union, said in a statement that the strike was inevitable because both the airline and the flight attendants failed to find common ground in labor negotiations.
NPR reports that the strike is affecting 180,000 passengers.
"Lufthansa and the union representing the flight attendants have been at odds for months over the union's legal status, and a last-minute effort by the airline to halt the strike failed after a court in Frankfurt confirmed the walkout was legal," NPR's Rob Schmitz told the station's Newscast Unit Thursday.

QUEENS, NY (VosIzNeias) – With no leads in a post-Rosh Hashana burglary in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Queens, the NYPD is reaching out to the Jewish community for assistance, hoping that someone can help them identify a suspect who robbed a home of $27,000 in cash and jewelry.
The NYPD told VIN News that the incident took place on the morning of October 3rd on 210th Street in Hollis Hills.
Police said that the suspect arrived in the area in a black Buick SUV and walked to the home from an unknown location, gaining access through a rear window that they believe was unlocked.
Once inside the home, the suspect entered a bedroom, taking $27,000 in cash, rings and bracelets before exiting through the same window, replacing the window screen before leaving the premises.

In the first Pasuk of this week’s Parsha, we have an unusual pair of Rashi’s. First, on the words “Lech Licha”, Rashi immediately tells us that this means “for your good and for your benefit”. (Rashi, Lech Licha 12:1) Rashi however is not content to leave his comment on Lech Licha there, instead he goes on and tells us almost exactly what the words are from the next pasuk. “I will make you into a great nation, I will grant you children and your reputation will be known throughout the world.” (Rashi, Lech Licha 12:1) Why did Rashi feel compelled to tell us what are basically the words from the 2nd pasuk at this time?

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – Israel’s prime minister alleges that a meeting earlier in the day of the U.N. nuclear watchdog “confirms that Iran lied” about its nuclear program.
Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in a video statement on Thursday that Iran “continues to hide its secret nuclear weapons program” and that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s special board meeting “confirms that Iran lied.”
Addressing the U.N. General Assembly last year, Netanyahu had described a “secret atomic warehouse” on the outskirts of Tehran.

Safiya Khalid, a 23-year-old immigrant from Somalia, soundly defeated a fellow Democrat on Tuesday for a seat on the Lewiston City Council, garnering nearly 70% of the vote to become possibly the youngest ever member of the city council and the first Somali immigrant.

BERLIN (AP) — An escape tunnel underneath the Berlin Wall opened to the public on Thursday for the first time amid celebrations of the 30-year anniversary of the opening of communist East Germany’s border.
The tunnel at Bernauer Strasse, near the city’s main Wall memorial, was opened by Mayor Michael Mueller. He thanked those who started digging the 100-meter (yard) tunnel in late 1970, nine years after East Germany sealed its border.

CHAPPAQUA, NY (VosIzNeias) – Residents of the New Castle community gathered on Wednesday to dedicate the New Castle Holocaust Memorial.
In a ceremony attended by more than 200 residents, elected officials, several local Holocaust survivors and Chappaqua resident and former President Bill Clinton, the town unveiled and dedicated the monument near the gazebo on South Greeley Avenue.
The opening of the Memorial coincide with and commemorate Kristallnacht.

President Donald Trump’s daughter and White House adviser saw real life examples in Morocco on Thursday when she met four women who are benefiting from changes that allow them to own land.
Ivanka Trump spearheads a U.S. drive to help women in developing countries with skills training, access to capital and land ownership.
One of the women, Aicha Bourkib, embraced Ivanka Trump and kissed her hands as the group met in an olive grove. The 59-year-old housewife and mother of four cultivates olive trees and vegetables on land she recently bought.
Bourkib also has two cows and wants to create a dairy cooperative in her village.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced Thursday that he’s retiring after more than three years as the city’s top cop, a post he took over during one of the most violent chapters in the city’s history and amid public outcry over the release of a video showing an officer shooting a black teen 16 times.

Uber Technologies Inc.’s self-driving test car that struck and killed a pedestrian last year wasn’t programmed to recognize and react to jaywalkers, according to documents released by U.S. safety investigators.
The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday released more than 400 pages of reports and supporting documents on the March 2018 crash that killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a road at night in Tempe, Arizona.
The documents painted a picture of safety and design lapses with tragic consequences but didn’t assign a cause for the crash. The safety board is scheduled to do that at a Nov. 19 meeting in Washington.

Sen. Rand Paul blocked a resolution Wednesday reaffirming the Senate’s support for whistleblower protections and accused Democrats of “fake outrage.”
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and Sen. Mazie Hirono had asked for unanimous consent to pass the resolution, which “acknowledges the contributions of whistleblowers” and throws the chamber’s support behind protecting whistleblowers from retaliation.

A New Jersey man caught on surveillance video faking a slip and fall was sentenced Monday to probation, community service and ordered to pay restitution, according to a report.
WABC-TV reported Alexander Goldinsky of Randolph received two years of probation and 14 hours of community service.
He also was ordered to pay $563.48 to an insurance company.
