Report by Credit Suisse finds that Israel holds 0.3% of global wealth, whereas its population makes up only 0.001% of the global population. Israel is ranked in the top 10 nations worldwide in terms of wealth growth for 2018-2019, according to the Global Wealth Report 2019, published Tuesday by Credit Suisse. Since 2000, the combined wealth of Israel's citizens has more than doubled and now stands at $1.08 trillion, the report finds. However, the authors expressed concerned about Israel's rate of wealth increase compared to the growth of its GDP. "The report points to a positive trend that supports Credit Suisse's strategic decision to focus on the Israeli market," says Ido Ben-Haim, head of private banking for Israel at Credit Suisse. "According to the report...
Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad fear that Israel will take advantage of the chaos caused by wave of protests in Lebanon to target some of their senior members who are based in Hezbollah-controlled territory. Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad are stepping up security for their top officials based in Lebanon for fear that Israel might try to assassinate them, the Palestinian Al-Quds news network reported Wednesday. According to the report, the terrorist groups are worried that Israeli security agencies might try to take advantage of the chaos created by widespread popular protests in Lebanon to target some of their senior officials. A source in one of the terrorist groups told Al-Quds that many of his organization's top officials were currently in southern Leb...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump triggered outrage Tuesday by comparing the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry to a lynching, assigning the horrors of a deadly and racist chapter in U.S. history to a process laid out in the Constitution. “That is one word no president ought to apply to himself,” said Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the highest-ranking African American in Congress. “That is a word that we ought to be very, very careful about using.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called Trump’s words “unfortunate.” “Given the history in our country, I would not compare this to a lynching,” the Senate’s top Republican told reporters. “That was an unfortunate choice of words.” Rep....
WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time, U.S. health regulators have judged a type of smokeless tobacco to be less harmful than cigarettes, a decision that could open the door to other less risky options for smokers. The milestone announcement on Tuesday makes Swedish Match tobacco pouches the first so-called reduced-risk tobacco product ever sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration. FDA regulators stressed that their decision does not mean the pouches are safe, just less harmful, and that all tobacco products pose risks. The pouches will still bear mandatory government warnings that they can cause mouth cancer, gum disease and tooth loss. But the company will be able to advertise its tobacco pouches as posing a lower risk of lung cancer, bronchitis, heart disease and other dis...
LONDON (AP) — Police in southeastern England said 39 people were found dead Wednesday inside a truck container believed to have come from Bulgaria. The truck, which is said to have entered Britain via the Welsh port of Holyhead on Saturday, was found by ambulance workers at Waterglade Industrial Park, Grays. “This is a tragic incident where a large number of people have lost their lives. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened,” Essex Police Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said. “We are in the process of identifying the victims, however I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process.” A 25-year-old-man from Northern Ireland has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody. A cordon has been put in place and access to ...
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google said it has achieved a breakthrough in quantum computing research, saying an experimental quantum processor has completed a calculation in just a few minutes that would take a traditional supercomputer thousands of years. The findings, published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, show that “quantum speedup is achievable in a real-world system and is not precluded by any hidden physical laws,” the researchers wrote. Quantum computing is a nascent and somewhat bewildering technology for vastly sped-up information processing. Quantum computers might one day revolutionize tasks that would take existing computers years, including the hunt for new drugs and optimizing city and transportation planning. The technique relies on quantum bits,...

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday as chaos swirled along the Turkey-Syria border and Iraqi leaders chafed over reports that the U.S. may want to increase the number of troops based in Iraq, at least temporarily. Esper’s meetings Wednesday at the Iraqi Defense Ministry came a day after Iraq’s military said American troops leaving northeastern Syria don’t have permission to stay in Iraq. The Iraqi statement appeared to contradict Esper, who has said that all U.S. troops leaving Syria will go to western Iraq and that the military would continue to conduct operations against the Islamic State group to prevent its resurgence in the region. He later added that the troops would be there temporarily until they are able to go...
Donald Trump has for weeks been privately testing the idea of replacing his chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, who’s swiftly fallen out of favor with some of the president’s allies after high-profile stumbles handling the House impeachment inquiry. About a month ago, Trump said to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in front of a roomful of staff: You have such great ideas, why don’t you be my chief? He has made similar remarks about Chris Liddell, a deputy chief of staff at the White House, according to people familiar with the matter. He’s also asked advisers whether his counselor Kellyanne Conway would be a good chief of staff, other people said. Some White House aides say this is nothing new, and that Trump often tests similar ideas in conversation or makes such rem...
President Trump sent Benjamin Netanyahu a letter for the Israeli prime minister’s 70th birthday, touting their relationship as Netanyahu faces uncertain political prospects in Jerusalem. “There has never been a more productive time in the Israeli-American partnership, and I know there are many more victories to come,” Trump wrote in the letter, a copy of which Netanyahu’s office released Tuesday. “Thank you for your strong leadership and loyal friendship. You are one my closest allies, and I look forward to the continued success we will have working together,” Trump added along with a message written in Sharpie saying, “You are great!” Read more at The Hill.
The Trump Organization has reportedly removed the business’s namesake from two ice skating rinks in New York City. The Washington Post reports the ice skating rinks in Central Park, which are two of President Trump’s oldest businesses, no longer bear his name on the boards around the rink. Trump’s name has also been covered on one of the rink’s awnings above the desk where visitors rent skates. The changes mark the first time in Trump’s presidency that the Trump Organization has appeared to minimize its connection to the name, according to the news outlet. Read more at The Hill.
Although the administration prefers “peace to war,” U.S. President Donald Trump is “fully prepared” to authorize military action against Turkey, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday. In an interview with CNBC’s Wilfred Frost, Pompeo said the “world should know” that “where we see American interests at stake or fundamental norms around the world that need to be enforced, we’ll use all the powers that we have.” While the administration’s preferred measures were economic and diplomatic, he said, “In the event that kinetic action or military action is needed, you should know that President Trump is fully prepared to undertake that action.” Pompeo did not specify what Turkish actions would prompt a U....

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Sunday officially marked the reburial of Queen Mother Helen of Romania, also known as Helen of Greece and Denmark, with a letter praising the late monarch for her work to aid and rescue Romanian Jews during the Holocaust. During World War II, despite Romania’s alliance with and domination by Nazi Germany, Helen fought to bring food, medical supplies, and other aid to the country’s Jews, and in 1942 personally intervened to stop a mass deportation of Jews to the death camps. Following the war, the Soviet-sponsored communist government forced Helen’s son Michael I to abdicate and they both went into exile in 1948. Helen spent most of the rest of her life in Switzerland, where she died in 1982. She was recognized as a “Righteous Amo...
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham introduces resolution condemning Democrats’ closed-door impeachment process.
For the first time in a decade, someone other than Benjamin Netanyahu will be asked to form a government in Israel. The 70-year-old prime minister has called two elections this year, has twice been given the chance by the president to put together a ruling coalition, and has twice failed. The fact that President Reuven Rivlin will now turn to someone else leaves Netanyahu even more vulnerable in his fight for political survival. But although he has failed, the man now set to try his hand, centrist general-turned-politician Benny Gantz, also has no clear path to success. Here are some of the possible scenarios, including even a third parliamentary election in less than a year, following two inconclusive elections in April and September. WHY IS ISRAELI POLITICS IN DEADLOCK? Shortly aft...
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said on Oct. 19 that all options will be considered to prevent Israel from ramping up settlement building in the West Bank, including cutting aid to the Jewish state, according to a report in The Hill. A reporter asked Warren during a campaign event if she would “make aid to Israel conditional on freezing settlements.” Warren replied, “Right now, Netanyahu says he is going to take Israel in a direction of increasing settlements; that does not move us toward a two-state solution. It is the official policy of the United States of America to support a two-state solution, and if Israel is moving in the opposite direction, then everything is on the table.” In July, Warren told an IfNotNow activist &ldquo...
