SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google said it has achieved a breakthrough in quantum computing research, saying an experimental quantum processor has completed a calculation in just a few minutes that would take a traditional supercomputer thousands of years. The findings, published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, show that “quantum speedup is achievable in a real-world system and is not precluded by any hidden physical laws,” the researchers wrote. Quantum computing is a nascent and somewhat bewildering technology for vastly sped-up information processing. Quantum computers might one day revolutionize tasks that would take existing computers years, including the hunt for new drugs and optimizing city and transportation planning. The technique relies on quantum bits,...

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday as chaos swirled along the Turkey-Syria border and Iraqi leaders chafed over reports that the U.S. may want to increase the number of troops based in Iraq, at least temporarily. Esper’s meetings Wednesday at the Iraqi Defense Ministry came a day after Iraq’s military said American troops leaving northeastern Syria don’t have permission to stay in Iraq. The Iraqi statement appeared to contradict Esper, who has said that all U.S. troops leaving Syria will go to western Iraq and that the military would continue to conduct operations against the Islamic State group to prevent its resurgence in the region. He later added that the troops would be there temporarily until they are able to go...
Donald Trump has for weeks been privately testing the idea of replacing his chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, who’s swiftly fallen out of favor with some of the president’s allies after high-profile stumbles handling the House impeachment inquiry. About a month ago, Trump said to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in front of a roomful of staff: You have such great ideas, why don’t you be my chief? He has made similar remarks about Chris Liddell, a deputy chief of staff at the White House, according to people familiar with the matter. He’s also asked advisers whether his counselor Kellyanne Conway would be a good chief of staff, other people said. Some White House aides say this is nothing new, and that Trump often tests similar ideas in conversation or makes such rem...
President Trump sent Benjamin Netanyahu a letter for the Israeli prime minister’s 70th birthday, touting their relationship as Netanyahu faces uncertain political prospects in Jerusalem. “There has never been a more productive time in the Israeli-American partnership, and I know there are many more victories to come,” Trump wrote in the letter, a copy of which Netanyahu’s office released Tuesday. “Thank you for your strong leadership and loyal friendship. You are one my closest allies, and I look forward to the continued success we will have working together,” Trump added along with a message written in Sharpie saying, “You are great!” Read more at The Hill.
The Trump Organization has reportedly removed the business’s namesake from two ice skating rinks in New York City. The Washington Post reports the ice skating rinks in Central Park, which are two of President Trump’s oldest businesses, no longer bear his name on the boards around the rink. Trump’s name has also been covered on one of the rink’s awnings above the desk where visitors rent skates. The changes mark the first time in Trump’s presidency that the Trump Organization has appeared to minimize its connection to the name, according to the news outlet. Read more at The Hill.
Although the administration prefers “peace to war,” U.S. President Donald Trump is “fully prepared” to authorize military action against Turkey, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday. In an interview with CNBC’s Wilfred Frost, Pompeo said the “world should know” that “where we see American interests at stake or fundamental norms around the world that need to be enforced, we’ll use all the powers that we have.” While the administration’s preferred measures were economic and diplomatic, he said, “In the event that kinetic action or military action is needed, you should know that President Trump is fully prepared to undertake that action.” Pompeo did not specify what Turkish actions would prompt a U....

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Sunday officially marked the reburial of Queen Mother Helen of Romania, also known as Helen of Greece and Denmark, with a letter praising the late monarch for her work to aid and rescue Romanian Jews during the Holocaust. During World War II, despite Romania’s alliance with and domination by Nazi Germany, Helen fought to bring food, medical supplies, and other aid to the country’s Jews, and in 1942 personally intervened to stop a mass deportation of Jews to the death camps. Following the war, the Soviet-sponsored communist government forced Helen’s son Michael I to abdicate and they both went into exile in 1948. Helen spent most of the rest of her life in Switzerland, where she died in 1982. She was recognized as a “Righteous Amo...
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham introduces resolution condemning Democrats’ closed-door impeachment process.
For the first time in a decade, someone other than Benjamin Netanyahu will be asked to form a government in Israel. The 70-year-old prime minister has called two elections this year, has twice been given the chance by the president to put together a ruling coalition, and has twice failed. The fact that President Reuven Rivlin will now turn to someone else leaves Netanyahu even more vulnerable in his fight for political survival. But although he has failed, the man now set to try his hand, centrist general-turned-politician Benny Gantz, also has no clear path to success. Here are some of the possible scenarios, including even a third parliamentary election in less than a year, following two inconclusive elections in April and September. WHY IS ISRAELI POLITICS IN DEADLOCK? Shortly aft...
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said on Oct. 19 that all options will be considered to prevent Israel from ramping up settlement building in the West Bank, including cutting aid to the Jewish state, according to a report in The Hill. A reporter asked Warren during a campaign event if she would “make aid to Israel conditional on freezing settlements.” Warren replied, “Right now, Netanyahu says he is going to take Israel in a direction of increasing settlements; that does not move us toward a two-state solution. It is the official policy of the United States of America to support a two-state solution, and if Israel is moving in the opposite direction, then everything is on the table.” In July, Warren told an IfNotNow activist &ldquo...

President Trump congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau early Tuesday on Trudeau's second-term win following parliamentary elections in Canada. Trudeau, whose campaign was rocked by recent scandals, appeared set to win a second term and his Liberal party won the most seats in the 338-seat Parliament, giving it the best chance to form the next government. "Congratulations to @JustinTrudeau on a wonderful and hard fought victory. Canada is well served. I look forward to working with you toward the betterment of both of our countries!" Trump tweeted after midnight Tuesday. The CBC projected that the Liberals won't win the majority of seats in Parliament and will have to rely on another party to pass legislation. Not since 1935 has a firs...
Young Israeli emissaries from the World Bnei Akiva movement, who have been dispatched overseas to reinvigorate Jewish life for young Jews around the world, helped their respective communities overcome a number of hurdles to successfully celebrate the Sukkot holiday. A number of the communities faced challenges getting a hold of a set of the four species, which according to tradition, are waved together as one unit on the Sukkot holiday. Each set of the four species includes an etrog (citron), lulav (closed frond from a palm tree), three hadassim (myrtle branches) and two aravot (willow branches).  In Sweden, Bnei Akiva’s emissary, Eliezer Vider, assumed responsibility for ordering dozens of sets of the four species from Israel for Stockholm’s Jewish community. “This...

President Reuven Rivlin will on Wednesday turn to Netanyahu’s centrist rival Benny Gantz, leaving Netanyahu even more vulnerable in his fight for political survival. But although he has failed, Gantz - a former general and political novice - also has no clear path to success. Here are some of the possible scenarios, including even a third parliamentary election in less than a year, after two inconclusive elections in April and September. The United States told Turkey on Tuesday night that the withdrawal of Kurdish fighters from the “safe zone” Ankara demands in northern Syria was complete, the Turkish defense ministry said in a statement quoted by Reuters. The statement added there was no need to initiate another operation outside the current area of operation at this stage. US President Donald Trump commented on the announcement on Twitter and wrote, “Good news seems to be happening with respect to Turkey, Syria and the Middle East. Further reports to come later!” Under a truce brokered by US Vice President Mike Pence, Turkey had agreed to a 5-day ceasefire in northern Syria, which expired on Tuesday. The Kurds began leaving the Turkish-besieged town of Ras al-Ain in no...
Baltimore City Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young wants to rename a building after U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, who died Oct. 17, the Baltimore Sun reports. Young said he is exploring the idea of renaming Courthouse East; however, the courthouse may be relocating. Due to this, Young said he might have to delay his decision, according to the Sun. Young told the Sun Cummings deserves the honor as he was a living example of what a public servant is supposed to be. Cummings passed away due to complications from longstanding health issues at the age of 68. The Maryland representative will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Thursday ahead of funeral services held on Friday.
