WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is defending its get-tough approach to trade against widespread attacks from America’s trading partners while at the same time arguing that many countries must increase government spending to boost global growth. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said U.S. trade policies, which have included tariffs on billions of dollars of imports from China and other nations, are intended to improve the rules for global trade. “We are preparing a foundation for future growth through fairer trade deals,” Mnuchin said in remarks Saturday to the policy-setting committee of the International Monetary Fund. Mnuchin said negotiations last week between the United States and China, the world’s two biggest economies, had achieved “...
LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Boris Johnson grudgingly asked the European Union late Saturday to delay Brexit after the British Parliament postponed a decision on whether to back his divorce deal. But the defiant Johnson also made clear that he personally opposed delaying the U.K.’s exit, scheduled for Oct. 31. A law passed by Parliament last month set a late-night deadline for the government to send a letter asking the EU for a three-month postponement if lawmakers had not approved an agreement with the bloc by Saturday. An hour before the deadline, European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: “The extension request has just arrived. I will now start consulting EU leaders on how to react.” Johnson made clear he was making the request under duress. The lett...
NEW YORK (AP) — Storming past questions about his health, Bernie Sanders vowed that he’s “more ready than ever” to fight for a political revolution — with a little help from new friends — at a rally Saturday that drew thousands to a New York City park. The rally offered a pointed reminder to skeptics in both political parties that the 78-year-old democratic socialist is still very much a force in the 2020 presidential race. Sanders opened his remarks by apologizing that he secured a permit for only 20,000 people. His campaign, he said, was forced to close the gates on many more people who were trying to enter the Queens park just across the river from Manhattan. “To put it bluntly, I am back,” Sanders declared, sparking chants of, “Be...

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison joined WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5's the C4 show Friday morning to discuss the first 90 days of his crime plan. In July, Harrison revealed both short- and long-term plans to reduce crime in the city as well as implement changes within the police department.  It has been 90 days since the release of his plan, and Harrison said, "We believe we're moving in the right direction." "So while you still see individuals committing bad acts, you know that's our culture that needs to be changed," Harrison said. Harrison went on to say the department can now do things that it could not three months ago.  "We can account for where our officers are, what they're doing, if they're doing it correctly and wh...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Elijah Cummings said somebody once told him he would see one guy when he sat down with President Donald Trump "and then you might see another guy" the next day. Cummings eventually saw that other side of Trump — the one who called the longtime Baltimore-area congressman a "brutal bully" and his district a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess." That was after the burly Cummings, as chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, angrily berated a Homeland Security official at a congressional hearing on the administration's policy of separating migrant families at the southern border. Cummings, who died Thursday at age 68 of complications from chronic health issues, refused to respond in kind. Instead, he invited Trump to come see the dist...
CULIACAN, Mexico (AP) — An intense gunfight with heavy weapons and burning vehicles blocking roads paralyzed the capital of Mexico’s Sinaloa state Thursday after security forces located one of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s sons who is wanted in the U.S. on drug trafficking charges. Mexican security secretary Alfonso Durazo said 30 members of the National Guard and army were patrolling in Culiacan when they were fired on from a house. They repelled the attack and inside the house found Ovidio Guzmán López. The house was then surrounded by heavily armed gunmen who had “a greater force” and authorities decided to suspend the operation, Durazo said. He did not say if Ovidio Guzmán had been arrested or went free. &ldq...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Leaders of the Pittsburgh synagogue where worshippers were fatally shot last year want to rebuild and renovate the building, turning it into what they hope will be a “center for Jewish life in the United States” and a symbol against hatred. On Friday, they outlined their vision for the Tree of Life building, where three congregations — Tree of Life, Dor Hadash and New Light — had gathered on Oct. 27, 2018. A gunman opened fire, killing 11 people and wounding seven. The building in the city’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood has not reopened since the shooting, considered the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history. Tree of Life leaders now envision a rebuilt space that includes places for worship; memorial, education and social events; cla...
Johnson & Johnson said it recalled about 33,000 bottles of its Johnson’s Baby Powder because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found a small amount of asbestos in a single bottle, a discovery likely to fuel existing concerns about the safety of the famous product. The health-products company, which is well known among consumers for its namesake powder, said it is recalling the bottles out of an abundance of caution despite the low levels of asbestos reported. The recall was triggered by FDA testing. See More Coverage ›
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Starting Saturday, food service facilities in Baltimore will be prohibited from using containers made from polystyrene foam, commonly known as styrofoam. Baltimore’s styrofoam container ban will include everything from foam to-go boxes to trays, cups and bowls. Fines start at $200. Proponents say the ban will protect the environment and keep styrofoam out of area waterways and landfills. The city council unanimously approved the ban last year. Then-Mayor Catherine Pugh signed it into law in April 2018. A statewide ban will take effect in 2020.
President Donald Trump celebrated the temporary cease-fire in Syria that his envoys negotiated Thursday and argued that it had been wise for him to allow Turkish forces to invade and attack Kurds because “sometimes you have to let them fight a little while.” Addressing supporters at a campaign rally here in Texas, Trump likened the warring in Syria to a schoolyard squabble. The carnage erupted after Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria, exposing the Kurds – U.S. allies – to the Turkish attack, but the president boasted that “not one drop of American blood” was shed. “Like two kids in a lot, you’ve got to let them fight and then you pull them apart,” Trump said. He marveled at the fighting, saying “i...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden is confronting growing anxiety among would-be allies in the Democratic establishment about his ability to win the presidential nomination following underwhelming debate performances, lagging fundraising and withering attacks from rivals in his own party and from President Donald Trump. The former vice president’s bank account is better suited for a city council race than a presidential election, warns Terry McAuliffe, a former Virginia governor and top Democratic fundraiser. Democratic donor Robert Zimmerman describes group “therapy sessions” with some party financiers haranguing the direction of the race. And in New Hampshire, state House Speaker Steve Shurtleff is leaning toward backing Biden, but says “people wish he’d be ...
DALLAS (AP) — President Donald Trump tried to turn impeachment rancor into a political rallying cry Thursday, using a Texas rally to bash Democrats as “crazy” and unpatriotic as they push forward with their investigations. Setting a dire tone, Trump told his supporters, “At stake in this fight is the survival of American democracy itself.” “Don’t kid yourselves,” he said of the Democrats, “I really don’t believe anymore that they love our country.” A day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats walked out of a White House meeting that had devolved into an insult-fest, Trump denounced her as “crazy Nancy.” “She’s nuts,” he told the crowd at a packed stadium in Dallas. The com...
