CULIACAN, Mexico (AP) — An intense gunfight with heavy weapons and burning vehicles blocking roads paralyzed the capital of Mexico’s Sinaloa state Thursday after security forces located one of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s sons who is wanted in the U.S. on drug trafficking charges.
Mexican security secretary Alfonso Durazo said 30 members of the National Guard and army were patrolling in Culiacan when they were fired on from a house. They repelled the attack and inside the house found Ovidio Guzmán López.
The house was then surrounded by heavily armed gunmen who had “a greater force” and authorities decided to suspend the operation, Durazo said. He did not say if Ovidio Guzmán had been arrested or went free.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Leaders of the Pittsburgh synagogue where worshippers were fatally shot last year want to rebuild and renovate the building, turning it into what they hope will be a “center for Jewish life in the United States” and a symbol against hatred.
On Friday, they outlined their vision for the Tree of Life building, where three congregations — Tree of Life, Dor Hadash and New Light — had gathered on Oct. 27, 2018. A gunman opened fire, killing 11 people and wounding seven.

Johnson & Johnson said it recalled about 33,000 bottles of its Johnson’s Baby Powder because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found a small amount of asbestos in a single bottle, a discovery likely to fuel existing concerns about the safety of the famous product.
The health-products company, which is well known among consumers for its namesake powder, said it is recalling the bottles out of an abundance of caution despite the low levels of asbestos reported. The recall was triggered by FDA testing.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Starting Saturday, food service facilities in Baltimore will be prohibited from using containers made from polystyrene foam, commonly known as styrofoam.
Baltimore’s styrofoam container ban will include everything from foam to-go boxes to trays, cups and bowls. Fines start at $200.
Proponents say the ban will protect the environment and keep styrofoam out of area waterways and landfills.
The city council unanimously approved the ban last year. Then-Mayor Catherine Pugh signed it into law in April 2018.
A statewide ban will take effect in 2020.

President Donald Trump celebrated the temporary cease-fire in Syria that his envoys negotiated Thursday and argued that it had been wise for him to allow Turkish forces to invade and attack Kurds because “sometimes you have to let them fight a little while.”
Addressing supporters at a campaign rally here in Texas, Trump likened the warring in Syria to a schoolyard squabble. DALLAS (AP) — President Donald Trump tried to turn impeachment rancor into a political rallying cry Thursday, using a Texas rally to bash Democrats as “crazy” and unpatriotic as they push forward with their investigations.
Setting a dire tone, Trump told his supporters, “At stake in this fight is the survival of American democracy itself.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The city of New Orleans is preparing to explode two giant, badly damaged construction cranes that are towering over a partially collapsed hotel project at the edge of the French Quarter, bringing them down Friday just ahead of tropical weather that could possibly cause them to tumble out of control.
They hope to demolish the cranes with a series of controlled explosions that would drop them straight down without damaging gas and electricity lines and historic buildings.

A former concentration-camp guard is facing trial in Germany in what may be one of the country’s last trials of Nazi war criminals.
The 93-year-old, known as “Bruno D.,” is accused of aiding and abetting 5,230 murders as part of the force at the Stutthof concentration camp in Poland.
He will be tried in a youth court, as he was 17 and 18 at the time of the killings.
He attempted to cover his face behind a red folder as he was wheeled into the Hamburg court.
Between 63,000 and 65,000 people, including 28,000 Jews were killed at Stutthof, which was one of the last concentration camps liberated in 1945.

Shirtless men with covered faces launched shovels at billboards in downtown Beirut. Hundreds of scooters circled a large, blazing fire. Protesters ripped whatever they could from the walls of a construction site nearby and flung it at the blaze to feed the fire early Friday morning. Riot police stood by.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Much of the United States, including Maryland, will see warmer and wetter conditions this winter, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center put out its winter outlook Thursday. The agency says the northern U.S. from Montana to Maryland has a fair chance of seeing more precipitation than average between December and February.
While the entire country has a likelihood of warmer-than-average or average temperatures during the winter, NOAA says some areas could still see cold conditions.
Warmer-than-average temperatures have been the name of the game in 2019; last month tied for the hottest September on record for the planet, NOAA said Wednesday.

Lung illnesses and deaths linked to vaping nationwide have continued to rise as federal health officials expand lab testing to understand the mysterious afflictions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.
As of Tuesday, the CDC has confirmed 33 deaths among 1,479 lung injuries associated with the use of e-cigarettes – up from at least 1,299 cases and 26 deaths announced last week. The cases span every state but Alaska, as well as the District of Columbia and one U.S. territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu hosted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Yerushalayim this morning and gave Pompeo a brief tour of the residence’s sukkah.
Pompeo, who recently visited Ankara, Turkey for talks which culminated in a ceasefire agreement in northern Syria, landed in Israel Thursday night.
