The passing of House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings leaves a vacancy in the leadership of the congressional impeachment inquiry, as the powerful Democrat was spearheading the efforts alongside Adam Schiff and Eliot Engel.
Cummings, of Maryland, passed away early Thursday “due to complications concerning longstanding health challenges,” his office said in a statement. The late congressman had been in poor health over the past few years, navigating the Capitol in a motorized cart and with a walker.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the next in seniority to take over the gavel of the committee, is now filling Cummings' post and will serve the "acting" Oversight Committee chair.

A 10-year-old California girl killed herself last weekend and authorities are investigating whether bullying played a role in her tragic death.
Allison Wendel, of Santa Ana, was found dead by her 9-year-old sister at home Sunday afternoon, KTLA reported. Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, who did not immediately return Fox News' request for comment, said her death appeared to be a suicide.
Bertagna said police "have heard the rumors that there may have been some bullying involved" and added, "Obviously we need to investigate that. At this point, we don’t know what happened.”

(ANKARA, Turkey) — Vice President Mike Pence announced Thursday that Turkey has agreed to a cease-fire to allow the Kurdish forces it was battling to safely withdraw from an area in northern Syria.
Pence spoke after he and other U.S. officials met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. He said that President Donald Trump made it clear that had Turkey not agreed, the U.S. would impose more economic sanctions. However, the agreement essentially gives the Turks what they had sought to achieve with their military operation in the first place, removal of the Kurdish forces from the border “safe zone.”

JERUSALEM (JNS) — The U.S. administration will not call for the evacuation of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria under the much-anticipated Mideast peace plan, according to U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman on Wednesday.
In an interview with Israel National News, Friedman said “having seen the experience of the evacuation of Gaza, I don’t believe that there is a realistic plan that can be implemented that would require anyone—Jew or Arab—to be forced to leave their home.”

Juul Brands is suspending the sale of non-menthol flavored vapes in the United States indefinitely.
The e-cigarette maker said Thursday that its mango, creme, fruit and cucumber flavors will be pulled from its website until a Food and Drug Administration review can be completed. Until Thursday, the flavored vapes were only available at Juul’s website.

A special election will be held to fill the seat held by U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, who died early Thursday from complications of a series of recent health issues. However, the seat will remain empty until at least February.
State law gives Gov. Larry Hogan 10 days to issue a proclamation declaring that a special primary election and a special general election will be held to fill the vacancy.
The special primary election shall be held on a Tuesday that is at least 65 days after the date of the proclamation, with the special general election to be held on a Tuesday at least 65 days after the primary.

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A former Maryland state lawmaker has pleaded guilty to illegally using campaign funds for her personal benefit.
Tawanna Gaines faces a sentence of up to 20 years, following her plea Thursday to one count of wire fraud. U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang is scheduled to sentence her Jan. 3. Chuang says guidelines call for eight to 33 months in prison, depending on the court's calculation of her criminal history.
Gaines was charged earlier this month in a criminal information. The Oct. 7 court filing accused Gaines of defrauding her campaign and its contributors out of more than $22,000.
Gaines, a 67-year-old Democrat from Prince George's County, served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2001. She resigned less than week before she was charged.

WAFA claimed that the Israelis performed "Talmudic rituals and prayers" on the Temple Mount.
Jews are prohibited from praying or bringing religious items onto the mount – and are removed and sometimes detained if caught doing so.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago teachers went on strike Thursday, marching on picket lines after failing to reach a contract deal with the nation’s third-largest school district in a dispute that canceled classes for more than 300,000 students.
The strike came after the Chicago Teachers Union confirmed Wednesday night that its 25,000 members would not return to their classrooms. As a pair of identical twin girls entered the world, they were greeted in the delivery room by two people who had been there before: Tara and Tori, the identical twin nurses working in their delivery room.
After a serendipitous turn of events, the twin nurses at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Georgia were able to deliver Addison and Emma Williams on Sept. 25.
Brannan Williams, the father of the newborns, said he was happy to hear there would be twins in the delivery room (in addition, of course, to his own).
"I was really nervous about the walk into the C-section room," he told CNN. "And then learning that, I was like, oh, that's pretty cool! It kind of relaxed me a little bit."
His wife, Rebecca Williams, delivered the babies three minutes apart.
