FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Fort Worth’s police chief reiterated Tuesday that a white officer’s killing of a black woman in her home was inexcusable, as an arrest warrant was released quoting the victim’s 8-year-old nephew as saying she pointed a gun at a bedroom window after hearing suspicious noises outside. Interim Chief Ed Kraus said 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson behaved as any Texas homeowner would have if he or she had heard a prowler. Also, the arrest warrant gave no indication that Officer Aaron Dean would have even been able to see the weapon through the glass. Kraus declared there was “absolutely no excuse” for the shooting, which happened while Jefferson was staying up late playing video games with her nephew. The new details were released a ...
Officials are reviewing plans to evacuate up to 50 U.S. nuclear bombs that have long been stored at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey in the wake of Ankara's military offensive in northern Syria, according to a report. But Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, conceded that he failed to take into account potential implications for his father’s political career. “Did I make a mistake? Maybe in the grand scheme of things,” Hunter Biden said in an ABC News interview that aired on Tuesday. “But did I make a mistake based on some ethical lapse? Absolutely not.” Joe Biden is a front-runner in the 2020 Democratic presidential contest, and the interview with his son aired hours before the fourth Democratic presidential debate. STOCKHOLM (AP) — Two researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a third from Harvard University won the 2019 Nobel Prize in economics on Monday for groundbreaking research into what works and what doesn’t in the fight to reduce global poverty. The award went to MIT’s Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo and Harvard’s Michael Kremer. The 46-year-old Duflo is the youngest ever to win the prize and only the second woman, after Elinor Ostrom in 2009. The three winners have worked together. They revolutionized developmental economics by pioneering field experiments — something like pharmaceutical companies’ drug tests — that generate practical insights into how poor people respond to educational, health care and other programs meant t...

Police are investigating anti-Semitic fliers that were found on several vehicles parked outside an Evesham Township restaurant. Three separate fliers have been passed around, but police are searching for one suspect. One of the anti-Semitic fliers references Jewish Hollywood producers and abuse, while the second flier makes racist statements about Israel and the Jewish state. The third is about world finances. Mayor Jaclyn Veasy condemned the act. “Evesham Township has absolutely zero tolerance for such flagrant anti-Semitism, or any other form of evil and bigotry in our town,” Veasy said. “I call on all of Evesham’s residents and businesses to come together at this time and join me in condemning such shameless displays of hatred. I also have full faith that...
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced after meeting with the House Democratic caucus on Tuesday that there will be no vote -- at least for now -- on the launch of formal impeachment proceedings against President Trump. "There's no requirement that we have a vote, and so at this time we will not be having a vote," Pelosi said. "We're not here to call bluffs -- we're here to find the truth, to uphold the Constitution of the United States. This is not a game for us. This is deadly serious." The move was seemingly a boon for moderate Democrats in swing districts, who have been reluctant to have a formal vote in favor of the proceedings as the 2020 elections approach -- even as they also have sought to appease liberal constituents by vocally backing...
Today, Erev Yom Tov, we celebrated the upherin of our dear son, Yitzchak. In conjunction, my son Efrayim and I made a siyum on mishnayos seder Nezikin. Here are the thoughts I shared at the event: At any of these “lifecycle” events, I like to try and share a perspective on chinuch and the challenges that are faced and what lies ahead, hopefully with some relevant connections to other events of the day. The last Mishnah in Horayos lays out the hierarchy of kedushah within klal Yisrael. A kohein takes precedence over a levi, a levi over a Yisrael, a Yisrael over a mamzeir, and so on. However, the very last statement of our seder declares that this is only when all else is equal. A mamzeir who is a talmid chacham takes precedence over even a kohein gadol who is bereft of Torah kn...

A graffiti image of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was found near the grave of Rabbi Nachman in the city of Uman in Ukraine. Israel's ambassador to Ukraine, Joel Lion, posted a photo of the vandalism on his Twitter account. “In Uman, not far away from Rabbi Nachman's grave. Anti-Semites painted a graffiti of the biggest murderer of Jews in History. Never Again begins by fighting any kind of anti-Semitism as defined by the IHRA,” he wrote. “Ukraine should strongly condemn and bring the perpetrators to justice,” added Lion.
