On Motzei Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah, United Hatzalah volunteer EMTs Aharon Avital, Tomer Tzenani, Yossi Cohen, Naftali Friedman, Adi Avivi, and Lior Filshteiner were summoned to the home of Yaron and Limor Golan in Hod Hasharon. Limor had just suffered a heart attack. To complicate matters more, Limor was 39 weeks pregnant when the heart attack occurred. “I was sitting in the living room watching TV when I heard a noise in the bedroom,” Yaron recounted. “I saw Limor on the floor and I rushed over to her and tried to wake her up. She didn’t respond. I called a neighbor for help. He began performing CPR on her. I didn’t know what to do so I called the emergency number for an ambulance.” Aharon Avital, head of the Hod Hasharon team for United Hatzalah ...
NEW YORK (AP) — Facing intense scrutiny from President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, Hunter Biden announced on Sunday that he will step down from the board of directors of a Chinese-backed private equity firm at the end of the month as part of a pledge not to work on behalf of any foreign-owned companies should his father win the presidency. Biden, the 49-year-old son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, revealed his plan in an internet post written by his attorney, George Mesires, who outlined a defense of the younger Biden’s work in Ukraine and China, which have emerged as one of Trump’s chief lines of attack against Hunter’s father despite no proof of impropriety. “Hunter makes the following commitment: Under a Biden Administration, H...
TIBERIAS (VosIzNeias) — Militantly anti-religious Tiberias mayor Ron Kobi continues his provocations against the Chareidi community despite the fact that, after failing six times to pass the city budget, he faces a hearing and dismissal immediately after the Sukkos festival. Kobi appealed his hearing in court, claiming that Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, who ordered the hearing, is in a conflict of interests due to his personal antipathy to Kobi, but the judges were unimpressed by his claims and stated that Deri acted in accordance with the law, which requires the establishment of an elected committee if the mayor cannot pass a budget and govern the city. Apparently motivated by revenge, Kobi deliberately sent a garbage collection van this past Shabbos to the Kiryat Shmuel Chareidi n...

CEYLANPINAR, Turkey (AP) — Turkey’s military said it captured a key Syrian border town under heavy bombardment Saturday in its most significant gain since an offensive against Kurdish fighters began four days ago, with no sign of relenting despite mounting international criticism. Turkish troops entered central Ras al-Ayn, according to Turkey’s Defense Ministry and a war monitor group. The ministry tweeted: “Ras al-Ayn’s residential center has been taken under control through the successful operations in the east of Euphrates” River. It marked the biggest gain made by Turkey since the invasion began Wednesday. The continued push by Turkey into Syria comes days after President Donald Trump pulled U.S. forces out of the area, making Turkey’s air an...
WASHINGTON (AP) — There were dozens of ears listening to President Donald Trump’s 30-minute phone call with the leader of Ukraine that is at the center of a House impeachment inquiry , and as many eyes that saw what he said. White House staffers, working in the secure, soundproof Situation Room in the West Wing basement, listened in and chronicled the conversation . National Security Council personnel edited a memo written about the call. White House lawyers, according to a government whistleblower , directed that the memo be uploaded into a highly restricted classified computer network. And there were the staffers whose keystrokes on a computer made that happen. They represent a universe of people, little known outside their ...
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli is being seen as a likely replacement for outgoing Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan, sources tell Fox News -- a move that would be welcomed by immigration hardliners. President Trump on Friday announced that McAleenan would be leaving the job to spend more time with his family, and added that the new acting secretary would be announced next week. The announcement immediately led to speculation as to who would step into the vital cabinet position -- one that is a central post for the nation's immigration policy. A former senior DHS official with close ties to the administration told Fox News Friday that Cuccinelli is on the top of Trump’s list to...
A new recording reveals a phone conversation between Naama Issachar, the Israeli woman arrested in Russia for possession of marijuana, and her friend. In the recording publicized Saturday, Issachar can be heard speaking on the phone to her friend just prior to being arrested by the Russian authorities. "Listen, apparently I'm in much bigger trouble than we hoped. I don't understand and I don't know. It feels like a movie." The recording ends with the words: "I'm lost. Police, they're taking me." Separately, Justice Minister Amir Ohana (Likud) responded to Issachar's 7.5-year prison sentence, telling News 13 that "the punishment is out of proportion. The State of Israel will do everything in order to bring Naama home." "I received a request ...
Ousted WeWork CEO Adam Neumann is off of Forbes‘ list of the world’s wealthiest people. The financial media company has updated Neumann’s status on Thursday, from an estimated net worth of $4.1 billion earlier this year to just $600 million. Forbes cited WeWork’s failure to complete an initial public offering in September and Neumann’s forced resignation from the company he co-founded as the causes of Neumann’s financial nosedive. The Israeli coworking entrepreneur has been on the list since 2016, when he had amassed an estimated personal wealth of $1.5 billion.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is suspending a tariff hike on $250 billion in Chinese imports that was set to take effect Tuesday, and China agreed to buy $40 billion to $50 billion in U.S. farm products as the world’s two biggest economies reached a cease-fire in their 15-month trade war. The two countries are leaving the thornier issues — including U.S. allegations that China forces foreign countries to hand over trade secrets in return for access to the Chinese market — until later negotiations. The tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports was set to rise Tuesday from 25% to 30%.
Four people were killed and three wounded in a shooting in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn early Saturday morning. The New York Police Department said the shooting occurred at "an illegal gambling location" and that at least two guns were found at the scene. “We have four males deceased inside,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said. “They are still at the scene. We are waiting on the medical examiner’s office.” Shea added that the wounded people - two men and one woman - received medical treatment at a hospital and their injuries were not life-threatening. An eighth person was injured when he tried to escape the shooting scene. The NYPD is investigating the circumstances of the attack.
JERUSALEM (JNS) — As the situation stands right now, Israel seems to be headed toward a third election in the early months of 2020. The Likud Central Committee met on Thursday night and voted that their party’s only candidate for prime minister is Benjamin Netanyahu. The central committee also determined that the Likud will only join a government during the 22nd Knesset if Benjamin Netanyahu serves as its prime minister—either alone or as part of a rotation. While only 300 out of the party’s 3,700 central committee members showed up to vote, the move makes it impossible for another Likud Knesset member to try to represent the party as candidate for prime minister. “There are people who want to replace Netanyahu as prime minister in middle of this term,&rdqu...
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan says he supports an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, because he doesn't see any other way "to get the facts." Hogan made the comments in an interview with Margaret Hoover on PBS's Firing Line that was recorded Thursday night and will be shown Friday. Hogan says he's not ready to say he supports impeachment, or the removal of the president. The governor also says he's very concerned about whether a "fair and objective" impeachment inquiry can be done "in this Democratic Congress." Congress is conducting an impeachment inquiry based on a whistleblower's allegation that Trump pressed the president of Ukraine to dig up dirt on political rival Joe Biden as he delayed military aid to the...
VIENNA (AP) — Roger Bannister, 1954. Eliud Kipchoge, 2019? Like the sub-four minute mile, running a marathon in less than two hours had seemed impossible — until Saturday. But this time there’s an asterisk: Olympic champion Kipchoge performed his feat under conditions so tightly controlled to maximize his success that it won’t appear in the record books. The 34-year-old Kenyan completed the 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles) in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 40.2 seconds at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, an event set up for the attempt. Ahead of the event, Kipchoge even compared the feat to being “like the first man on the moon.” Afterward, he drew comparisons to Bannister, the late Briton who 65 years ago became the first athlete to run a mile in under four minutes. &l...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three people have died at the scene of Southern California wildfires this week, authorities said Saturday, as firefighters aided by diminishing winds beat back a blaze on the edge of Los Angeles that damaged or destroyed more than 30 structures and sent a blanket of smoke across a swath of neighborhoods. Los Angeles officials said the fire in the city’s San Fernando Valley area hadn’t grown significantly since Friday, and ground crews were tamping down lingering hotspots. Thousands of people remained under evacuation orders, though many were allowed to return home Saturday. One man who tried to fight the blaze died of a heart attack, and one firefighter reported a minor eye injury. The fire’s cause is under investigation, and authorities warned...
A Hard Rock Hotel and Casino building under construction in downtown New Orleans partially collapsed on Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring more than a dozen others. Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed the fatality to reporters near the scene. Three people were originally unaccounted for, officials said, but by mid-afternoon, one of those individuals was said to have transported themselves to the hospital and was in stable condition. Of the two other individuals still missing, New Orleans Fire Department Chief Timothy McConnell said  "We believe we know where they are but we are unable to locate them at this time," adding that search teams used drones to pan the building but were unable to find the individuals. The chief confirmed ...
The U.S. and China have reached a partial trade pause. President Trump, speaking at the White House, said: “We’ve come to a very substantial phase one deal”...adding it will take three to five weeks to get written. The deal includes intellectual property, financial services and $40-$50 billion related to agriculture products. It is unclear what the U.S will give up in return and a comprehensive trade deal will have two or three phases. The U.S. will not be raising tariffs on the Chinese next week to the 30 percent level as part of this agreement. U.S. stocks spiked to the highs of the session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by nearly 500 points, before pulling back slightly at the close. President Trump signaled th...
