At least one person is dead and one injured in connection to a fast-moving wildfire sweeping through Los Angeles County’s San Fernando Valley that fire officials anticipate could take days to contain. The Saddleridge Fire has prompted mandatory evacuation orders for more than 100,000 people and has destroyed at least 25 homes. Meanwhile, dry, windy weather contributing to the fire’s spread may be worsening, officials said. One man in his late 50s died overnight from cardiac arrest related to the Saddleridge Fire, and a firefighter suffered an eye injury but is recovering, Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas confirmed Friday morning. “Nobody’s going home right away. This is going to take a few days,” Terrazas said during a Friday morning news briefing, whe...
Study reveals a plodding pace at 45 may be a marker for dementia and Alzheimer's disease Doctors have long known that elderly people who walk slowly are at higher risk of an early death  But new Duke University research found that people who walk at a slower pace are more likely to look older than they are and show signs of dementia  The researchers found that these slow walkers could show signs of being less 'mentally agile' as young as age three Screening tests for three- or 45-year-old people could help predict who is at highest risk for accelerated brain-aging and guide preventive measures Walking speed can predict a person's risk of killer diseases including dementia - decades before symptoms develop, new research suggests.  The brains and...
MOSCOW (VosIzNeias) — As previously reported by VosIzNeias, an Israeli woman was arrested in Moscow on her way back to Israel from a post-service trip in India. Naama Issachar was pulled aside in the airport after Russian officials found 9 grams of marijuana in her luggage, an amount that would be non-prosecutable in Israel. Issachar denies that her intention was to cross Russian border security, and therefore can not be classified as a drug smuggler. Issachar was first held in prison for several months, only being allowed minimal family visits and phonecalls. For the first few months she had not been allowed to air her defense. But now Russia has announced a verdict. Issachar has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. Israel’s Foreign Ministry has called the sentence &l...
HALLE (JNS) — The two victims of the Wednesday attack on a synagogue in Halle, Germany, on Yom Kippur, have been identified. German pop-music enthusiast Jana Lange, 40, and outdoor painter Kevin S., 20, were shot and killed near the synagogue by 27-year-old Stephan Balliet, who first attempted to break into a synagogue, but was unable to open the massive wooden doors, which were bolted shut. The suspect livestreamed the attacks on Twitch, with the 35-minute video being viewed by 2,200 people in the 30 minutes before it was taken down, according to the video platform. Balliet ...
CROWN HEIGHTS (VosIzNeias) — The famed Chabad headquarters located at 770 Eastern Parkway was evacuated Friday morning due to a small fire. After people smelled fire and saw some smoke in the basement of 770, the fire department was called. FDNY arrived at approximately 9:30 AM. According to the FDNY, there was indeed a small blaze in the basement. The fire was likely electrical, as it was found in a utility closet. The power was cut in order to deal with the fire, and the building was evacuated. Although hundreds of people were in the building at the time, there were no injuries.
MIAMI (AP) — After seeking asylum in the United States at the Mexican border, Pablo Sanchez was placed in a detention center and is now facing what has become an increasingly common scenario under President Donald Trump: deportation to Cuba. Since the end of the Obama administration, the number of Cubans deported from the U.S. has increased more than tenfold to more than 800 in the past year as the Trump administration enforces a new policy inked just days before it took over. It is also imposing its own sharp limits on who is eligible for asylum. That’s an unwelcome development for growing numbers of asylum-seeking Cubans who had long benefited from a generous U.S. approach and their government’s unwillingness to take its people back. For decades, Cubans fleeing the co...
ISTANBUL (AP) — In the face of widespread international criticism for his military foray into northern Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remains defiant, standing by his pledge to return as many refugees as possible to a border corridor that will be carved out by force. “We will rebuild an area for 1 million people, for those who want to return to their country and don’t have a home to go back to,” he told members of his governing party on Thursday to widespread applause. On Wednesday, Turkey sent its military into northern Syria after announcing plans to create a buffer zone which pushes back Kurdish militants and potentially allows some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees settled in the country to return. The offensive was launched after U.S. President Donald...
Congress can seek eight years of President Donald Trump’s business records from his accounting firm, a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., ruled Friday in one of several legal battles over access to the president’s financial data. In a 2-1 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit upheld Congress’ broad investigative powers and rejected the president’s bid to block lawmakers from subpoenaing the documents. The case is one of several clashes between the Democrat-controlled House and the Republican president over Trump’s data that is expected to reach the Supreme Court. In this case, the judges ruled that Trump’s arguments – that the subpoenas were invalid because Congress lacked a “legitimate legislative purpose” fo...
A team of four Israeli heart specialists traveled to a hospital in Cyprus with life-saving technology to save a woman who was suffering cardiac issues following childbirth, the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer revealed on Facebook on Sunday. The Medical Center said a 29-year-old woman from Nicosia, Cyprus, suffered “a severe problem in her left main cardiac arterial region during the course of childbirth.” Doctors at Nicosia Hospital were apparently “running out of time to save her life” since the medical facility lacked a life-saving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest. The doctors made an emergency call to their colleagues at Sheba&rsquo...
Hillary Clinton told a PBS reporter that she could win against President Trump in a 2020 rematch after he mockingly urged her to run again. “I think that Crooked Hillary Clinton should enter the race to try and steal it away from Uber Left Elizabeth Warren,” Trump said Tuesday on Twitter. “Only one condition. The Crooked one must explain all of her high crimes and misdemeanors including how & why she deleted 33,000 Emails AFTER getting ‘C’ Subpoena!” “Don’t tempt me. Do your job,” Clinton said in response to the tweet. Clinton, 71, told PBS reporter Judy Woodruff that she would win in 2020 if she ran. “So maybe there does need to be a re-match. I mean obviously I can beat him again,” Clinton said, seemingly forgettin...

Jews should not have to look over their shoulders in fear for their lives during prayer.” On Thursday, the suspected perpetrator of the shootings in the central German city of Hall...

The Israeli Airports Authority estimates incoming and outgoing traffic at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel’s holiday season at 2.4 million passengers, including 1.1 million Israelis spending the upcoming holidays overseas. This amounts to a quarter of the 4.6 million tourists who visited Israel during the entire past year. The leading destination for those leaving for foreign vacations in September 2019 is Turkey, followed by Greece, Italy, the US, and Russia. An estimated 100,000 tourists from North America will spen...

1) “Am navel” – What’s the Insult? We start off with perek 34, pasuk 6.  “Hal’Hashem tigmilu zos.  Am navel v’lo chacham.”  And, the pasuk is talking about the Jewish people, and it’s berating them for being a foolish nation, and a not wise nation, and there’s something very odd that happens in the Targum Unkeles.  Targum Unkeles says on the words, “Am navel”, “Ama d’kabila Oraisa v’lo chachimu.”  It says: They are the nation that accepted the Torah, and they’re not smart.  So, I understand that the words, “v’lo chacham,” means “v’lo chachimu.”  That means not smart.  But, how does “am navel”, the fool...
