In this week’s parshah, we are told about the prohibition of taking an ownerless mother bird when it is sitting on its eggs or young (22:6). Directly after that, the Torah relays the commandment to build a protective fence on the roof of one’s home. Immediately following this, the Torah forbids a Jew from crossbreeding two different species of produce in one’s field or allowing two different species of animal to pull one plow at the same time. After that, the Torah discusses the commandment to tie tzitzis to any four cornered garment.  We know that there is significance and a connection when one mitzvah in the Torah is placed next to another (this is often expounded on in Gemara regularly). What then can possibly be the connection between sending away a mother bir...
BALTIMORE, MD — Traffic is expected to be so heavy in downtown Baltimore Thursday, Sept. 12, that transportation officials are encouraging people to avoid some areas altogether. Congestion, road closures and delays are possible from 4 to 8:30 p.m. President Donald Trump will head to Baltimore Thursday to deliver an address at the GOP conference. The event will be at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront hotel on Aliceanna Street in Harbor East. It is organized by the Congressional Institute and House Republican Conference. Those downtown after 4 p.m. should avoid the area south of Baltimore Street between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Central Avenue, the Baltimore Department of Transportation advised. This is the area that Baltimore's Office of Emergency Management said will b...
Parshat Ki Teitzei presents a seemingly harsh set of guidelines for inclusion within the Jewish people. Marriage is strictly limited to pedigreed Jews and, additionally, not all races are granted access into Judaism. Certain nationalities, such as Amon and Moav, are completely excluded based on past national misdeeds. Other nationalities such as the Egyptians are allowed to convert but must undergo a three-generation transitional period before marriage with fully pedigreed Jews is licensed.  Full membership within the Jewish nation isn’t inclusive, but severely restricted. To some, these restrictions appear bigoted and chauvinistic. The modern enlightened world has successfully created inclusive educational settings, workplaces and even families- embracing people regardless of ...
9/12/01 I write this with thanks to the Ribbono Shel Olam, to be able to write it, and not be written about!  As we were dispatched to the Twin Towers for a fire, not knowing what we were getting in to, I rode in the Hatzoloh ambulance to Manhattan. We were able to clearly see the upper portion of the towers on fire from the Prospect Expway on the way into the Battery Tunnel.  As we got out of the tunnel and turned on to West St. I saw body parts all over the street. I saw a part of the airplane, it looked like a engine behind a burned car. As we got closer, we were told to park the ambulance right near the towers. I think we were originally right behind the towers. Then there was a report that a 3rd plane may be coming into the building, so we got back on the ambulance and st...

In a major win for the Trump administration, the Supreme Court issued an order late Wednesday ending all injunctions that had blocked the White House's ban on asylum for anyone trying to enter the U.S. by traveling through a third country, such as Mexico, without seeking protection there. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals – long a liberal bastion that has been aggressively reshaped into a more moderate court by the Trump administration – handed the White House a partial victory in the case on Monday by ending the nationwide injunction. But the 9th Circuit kept the injunction alive within the territorial boundaries of the circuit, which encompasses California, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Idaho, Guam, ...
New York – In a since deleted tweet, the NY Times said “airplanes took aim” at the Twin Towers of New York City’s World Trade Center. In a shocking display of insensitivity to all the victims and families affected by this heinous act of terrorism, the Times deliberately worded their story to blame ‘airplanes’ for the attack. The story did not mention that the planes that hit the towers were hijacked by terrorists from al-Qaeda. The Times since pulled the offensive tweet, and tweeted “We’ve deleted an earlier tweet to this story and have edited for clarity. The story has also been updated.” Many Twitter users refused to let the Times off the hook, and screenshots of the original tweet were widely distributed. People who were too youn...
Dear Friends,Today, September 11th, we remember the tragedy that befell this nation eighteen years ago. We witnessed barbaric hatred that claimed over 3,000 innocent lives. We witnessed a fundamental turning point for this country and for the entire world. Life has not been the same since September 11, 2001. A vulnerability that we thought did not exist has been exposed – and it has affected each of us in different ways. Some of us had relatives, friends, and acquaintances in the World Trade Center Towers. Even if you were fortunate enough to escape personal loss on that dark day, you share in the pain of our countrymen and fellow citizens. Through the smoke and veil of tears, we saw something amazing. A nation made up of so many different races, religions and cultures came together ...
Baltimore’s Department of Transportation is encouraging downtown workers to begin their afternoon commute early Thursday, as President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to the city is expected to cause traffic congestion. Because of heavy traffic volumes expected from 4 to 8 p.m. in downtown Baltimore, the department suggested workers begin to leave for home before 4 p.m. to avoid delays. Some intersections may be temporarily closed in the afternoon and early evening hours, the department said in a statement. Traffic enforcement officers will work to help move traffic, the department said. The department also advised people to use public transportation Thursday, especially if they are planning to attend the 7:05 p.m. Orioles game against the Dodgers. Trump is sch...
A man whose mother is a 9/11 victim ripped Rep. Ilhan Omar for describing the terror attacks as “some people did something” during the annual anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero on Wednesday. Nicholas Haros Jr., wearing a black T-shirt with the words “Some people did something?,” singled out the congresswoman and the other members of “the Squad” after reading the names of the dead, including his mother’s, Frances Haros, at the ceremony. “’Some people did something,’ said a freshman congresswoman from Minnesota,” said Haros in reference to Omar. Amid some applause, Haros continued, “Today I am here to respond to you exactly who did what to whom.” “Madam, objectively speaking, we know who and wh...
I planned each charted course Each careful step along the byway And more, much more than this I did it my way  “My Way” (sung by Frank Sinatra)   How we admire the character of Frank Sinatra as he croons about doing it “my way”!  We admire his strength, his individuality, his ability to stand counter to prevailing sentiment.  He did his own thing and he did it his way.  Sinatra’s lyrics and his character captured the moment when the message underlying the unsettled and disruptive 1960’s – from the antiwar movement, to free love, to hippies and yuppies – became conventional.  What was troubling when done by a bunch of long-haired dropouts in San Francisco had now become the norm.  Frank Sinatra&hell...

Americans are marking the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with mournful ceremonies, volunteering, and increasing attention to the terror attacks' extended toll on responders. Numerous relatives of victims are expected at ground zero in Manhattan Wednesday, while President Donald Trump is scheduled to join an observance at the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence is to speak at the third attack site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly two decades later, the attacks' aftermath is visible from airport security checkpoints to Afghanistan, where a rocket exploded at the U.S. embassy early Wednesday morning. "People say, `Why do you stand here, year after year?"' Chundera Epps, a sister of Sept. 11 victim Christopher Epps, said at last year's c...
BALTIMORE (WBFF) - Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan sent a letter criticizing Baltimore's crime-fighting strategy as too "status quo," and saying the state could give Baltimore an extra $21 million only if it sends "acceptable" measures and reports on reducing violent crime. Mayor Jack Young appealed to Hogan for help this summer, amidst a surge in murders and other violence in the city. "While we are committed to continuing to provide the city with unprecedented state support, the people of Baltimore City want and deserve results from their own city leaders," he wrote. He said the state is prepared to give $21 million in state funding, which includes $7 million requested by Young and Harrison in an Aug. 23 meeting. "While your new Crime Reduction Strategy takes some important steps...
Yishai Ribo’s evocation of the Avodah[1] of Yom Kippur stirs hearts and moves to tears. It has gone viral here in Israel; I’m told that the same is happening in the US. (One of the many, many beautiful things about living here is that – especially recently – people who proudly define themselves as staunchly secular have enough familiarity with the words of davening that they, too, admit to deep feelings of connection to songs like this. A raft of Israeli musicians have turned to piyutim for their material, and the street buys it.) Those who love it claim it has stolen their attention from what other spiritual preparations they were making for the coming Days of Awe. No worries, though. The song, with a haunting melody, powerful delivery, and unf...
Red alert sirens blared in the cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod in southern Israel Tuesday evening. Eyewitnesses reported seeing explosions in the sky caused by the Iron Dome system intercepting rockets in mid-air. The Ashkelon City Council reported, "Following the alarm that was heard in Ashkelon a few moments ago, Mayor Tomer Glam ordered the opening of shelters throughout the city. Teams are on the ground and working to implement the directive during these minutes. We note that the Iron Dome system has intercepted two rockets fired at the city." Prime Minister Netanyahu was in the middle of a speech at a political conference in Ashdod when the alarms sounded. The speech was stopped and the participants were evacuated. After the sirens the conference was resumed and the prime minister co...
According to a survey conducted among 400 religious Zionists, more of them seek answers to shailos with the Google search engine than direct their questions to rabbonim. In response to the question, “When you have a regular halachic shailah, what do you do first?” 49 percent answered, “I look for an answer on the internet,” while only 34.8 percent said, “I ask my regular rov.” Among respondents aged 30 and younger, 53 percent said that they have a regular rov to whom they feel comfortable to address their shailos.
