Are you aware of the connection between the El Paso shooter and Palestinian terrorists? No, the shooter wasn’t a Palestinian and had no known affiliation with the Palestinian cause. He was apparently an anti-immigrant white nationalist, as indicated in the manifesto he seems to have posted on a shady website shortly before he set out to kill innocent Hispanic people, accomplishing that goal in 22 cases, and failing in 24 others, where the victims were merely wounded. The Palestinian “connection,” such as it is, is indirect, and involves Jake Tapper, the well-known broadcast journalist and frequent critic of President Trump. In the wake of the domestic terrorist attack in El Paso, many charged that the president’s rhetoric bore some responsibility for the ...
In this week's parsha, Eretz Yisrael is praised as (8:8) "A land of wheat and barley and grapes and figs and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey." These species are given a special status when it comes to making berachos. Shulchan Aruch (OC 211:4), based on the gemara (Berachos 41,) rules that if you have in front of you two foods that are both of the aforementioned seven species, the berachah should be made on the one that comes earliest in the pasuk. For example, if you have a grape and a fig, you should make the berachah on the grape. However, the determining factor is the proximity of the food to the word eretz in the pasuk. The word eretz is repeated before olive oil and honey. Thus, if you have a date ...

Mylan and Pfizer are still struggling with manufacturing issues for the EpiPen anti-allergy injector as the critical back-to-school season gets underway and a rival generic product hits the market. EpiPens, which can help stop a severe or life-threatening allergic reaction, have been hard to get since at least May 2018, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the device was in short supply. Former and current employees of Pfizer’s Meridian Medical Technologies Inc., which makes the product for Mylan, said supply has been unsteady since at least 2017, when inspectors began noticing defects. Pfizer spokeswoman Amy Rose said the drugmaker is committed to resolving the supply problem. “Our production output is improving,” Rose said. “However, we anticipate su...
North Korea’s top diplomat said on Friday that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was a “diehard toxin” who only complicates denuclearisation talks and North Korea was ready for both dialogue and standoff. North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, who took part in the Hanoi summit along with Pompeo, called the chief U.S. negotiator the “diehard toxin of the U.S. diplomacy” who employs “hackneyed sanctions rhetoric”. Ri referred to Pompeo’s remarks in recent press interviews in which he said sanctions would be kept until North Korea takes concrete actions on denuclearisation. “He is truly impudent enough to utter such thoughtless words which only leave us disappointed and skeptical as to whether we can solve any problem with such a g...
The trade war between the United States and China worsened Friday as Beijing imposed retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion in American goods and President Trump took the extraordinary step of calling on U.S. companies to stop doing business with China. The new tariffs, which included reinstated levies on auto products, delivered a strategically timed blow as recession warning signs cast doubt on the strength of the U.S. economy. Trump initially directed his ire at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in Friday tweets, painting the Fed’s lack of monetary easing as a greater threat to American workers and businesses. But moments later he said he would be responding to China’s tariffs later Friday and demanded American companies cut ties with China. “Our great American compan...
Hamas and Islamic Jihad praised Friday the terror attack near Dolev settlement that killed 17-year-old Rina Shnreb, but refrained from claiming responsibility for it. In Friday’s main sermon in the Gaza Strip, Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said “this is a heroic attack which we don’t know who stands behind it and who planned it, but it, among others, prove that Jerusalem will explode,” reported Hebrew-language YNET News outlet. In a statement issued earlier by Hamas, it was stated that the attack took place “on the 50th anniversary to the burning of the al-Aqsa mosque and clarifies that our people did not and will not abandon the al-Aqsa mosque even for one day, whoever the victims might be.” Read more at i24NEWS.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone radiation treatment for a malignant tumor found on her pancreas, the Supreme Court disclosed Friday. It is her second treatment within a year for the disease. The court said the treatment began earlier this month, and has been completed. “The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body,” the court’s spokeswoman said in a statement. “Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans. No further treatment is needed at this time.” Ginsburg last December had part of a lung removed after cancer was discovered there. For the first time, the 86-year-old justice missed a monthly sitting of the court, although she kept up with oral arguments and wrote a decisio...

The Israeli military issued a stern warning to Hamas on Thursday, saying it must enforce its control over other terrorist groups like Islamic Jihad as tensions continue to simmer on the Gaza Strip border, while Israel’s foreign minister said the IDF was prepared for a major operation in Gaza. Recent days have seen an uptick in attacks on southern Israel, with rockets and mortars being fired, as well as an infiltration attempt. The IDF has engaged in measured retaliation for each incident, many of which are believed to be the work of Iran-backed Islamic Jihad. Israel holds Gaza-ruling Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the coastal enclave. The Israeli news site Walla reported that Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, addressed Gazans directly...

In the prelude to their crossing the Jordan, Moshe warns them, Do not say to yourself, when the Lord, your God, has repelled them from before you, saying, “Because of my righteousness, the Lord has brought me to possess this land,” and [that] because of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord drives them out from before you. Not because of your righteousness or because of the honesty of your heart, do you come to possess their land...     (דברים ט ד-ה)    Facing an apparently harsh reality, the Jewish people become aware that aren’t as good as they think they are, and are fortunate despite their lack of worthiness to nevertheless merit entering the Land.    But didn’t the Torah state very clearly ju...
