Washington - Airlines expect record crowds over the week-long Labor Day period. The trade group Airlines for America forecast Tuesday that 17.5 million passengers will fly on U.S. carriers between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3. That’s 2.5 million passengers a day and a 4% increase over the same week last year. The busiest day is expected on Friday, Aug. 30, when the group forecasts just under 3 million people will board a U.S. airline. The airline group says carriers have added seats even though Southwest, American and United have canceled thousands of flights while their Boeing 737 Max planes remain grounded. Transportation Department figures show that travel demand has been strong all year, with fares at or near record lows, after adjusting for inflation. The numbers don&rsqu...
Anchorage, AK - Alaska’s wildfire season usually ends well before mid-August but persistent hot, dry weather has contributed to the start of new fires and the spread of old ones. High winds Saturday damaged power lines or knocked trees into lines, sparking multiple fires, including one that temporarily shut down the highway between Anchorage and Denali National Park and burned more than 50 structures, said Tim Mowry, spokesman for the Alaska Division of Forestry. Heavy rain has dampened fires north of the Alaska Range but has not reached areas north and south of Anchorage. “Usually our folks are in the Lower 48 helping out and we’re drowning in rainfall in August in most of Alaska,” he said. Fire crews are working with the state fire marshal to confi...

An amusement ride in Tatzmania park in Germany had to shut down after the owner realized that from a distance the attraction looked like a pair of swirling swastikas. The gaffe happened to a ride called ‘Eagle Fly’ in the Tatzmania park in the town of Löffingen in southern Germany. When the eight gondolas are in two groups of four, and when seen from a distance they make two very distinct reverse swastikas, the same that the Nazis used as their symbol. The ride opened in late July, but it was not until journalists from the broadcaster SWR showed up that owner Rüdiger Braun noticed the design flaw. He said he was taking it out of service and apologized to anyone offended by the ride
Rep. Ilhan Omar said Monday that U.S. aid to Israel should be tied to its treatment of Palestinians, questioning whether the funds should continue after the country blocked her and Rep. Rashida Tlaib from visiting in an official capacity. “We give Israel more than $3 million in aid every year. This is predicated on their being an important ally in the region and the ‘only democracy’ in the Middle East. But denying visit to duly elected members of Congress is not consistent with being an ally. And denying millions of people freedom of movement or expression or self-determination is not consistent with being a democracy,” Omar said at the press conference in St. Paul, Minn. Omar had planned to travel with Tlaib to Israel this month until the Israeli government annou...

President Trump on Sunday said that buying Greenland isn’t “No. 1 on the burner” but quipped that Denmark may want the US to take the world’s biggest island off its hands to save money. “Denmark, essentially, owns it. We’re very good allies with Denmark, we protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world. And so the concept came up and I said certainly, strategically it’s interesting. And we’d be interested.” Trump then suggested that Greenland was “hurting Denmark very badly” throwing out the figure that it cost the Danish government “$700 million.” “So they carry it at a great loss. And strategically for the United States it would be nice,” Trump added. Read more at THE NY ...
The NYPD’s largest union called out Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday over a massive melee in Brooklyn that left three officers with minor injuries. One of the injured cops was head-butted by a teen who was allegedly caught with a canister of pepper spray, the NYPD said. Bottles and other debris were also hurled at cops from above, but no one was hit by the projectiles that are believed to have been tossed out of windows or rooftops in the sprawling Marcy projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the NYPD said. “How are cops supposed to do our job in this environment? When will @NYPDNews or @NYCMayor @BilldeBlasio stand up & say enough is enough?” the Police Benevolent Association fumed on Twitter. “Chaos is running the streets. This is outrageous — we’re luc...
