Chicago - United Airlines is setting an earlier cut-off time when pilots must stop drinking alcohol before flights. The airline is telling pilots they must abstain from alcohol for 12 hours before flights, up from a previous ban lasting eight hours. The change in the so-called bottle-to-throttle rule comes after two United pilots were arrested in Scotland and charged with suspicion of being under the influence before a flight to the U.S. The old 8-hour limit complied with Federal Aviation Administration rules, which also prohibit pilots from flying with a blood-alcohol content at or above 0.04%. A United Airlines spokesman says the new policy was sent to pilots a week ago and took effect last Saturday.
Frankfort, KY - The father of Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes deliberately violated federal law by funneling corporate contributions to his daughter’s failed 2014 U.S. Senate campaign, a prosecutor said Tuesday at the start of a trial. Jerry Lundergan’s attorney characterized the contributions as mistakes during a hectic period when Grimes’ campaign against Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell got off to a “rough start.” But those mistakes did not amount to crimes, defense attorney J. Guthrie True said. Both sides made opening arguments in a federal jury trial that could last about four weeks in Kentucky’s capital city. Lundergan and another defendant, Dale Emmons, are accused of taking part in a conspiracy to funnel illegal ...
Caracas, Venezuela - Legislators loyal to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Monday stripped immunity from four opposition lawmakers accused of treason amid a struggle for control of the crisis-stricken nation. The move brings to 18 the number of opposition politicians Maduro’s government has threatened with criminal prosecution so far this year. Socialist party boss Diosdado Cabello oversaw the unanimous vote as head of the National Constituent Assembly, the legislative body stacked with Maduro’s allies that rivals the opposition-controlled National Assembly. Its members cheered and waved Venezuelan flags overhead throughout the afternoon session. “Justice is slow, but it gets to where it has to go,” said Cabello, justifying the move depri...
New York - CBS and Viacom announced a long-anticipated reunion Tuesday, bringing together their television networks and the Paramount movie studio as traditional media giants bulk up to challenge streaming companies like Netflix. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, who will become CEO of the combined company, said the new ViacomCBS will be “one of only a few companies with the breadth and depth of content and reach to shape the future of our industry.” Analysts say the reunion will help both companies navigate an ever-competitive streaming landscape. Viacom owns Paramount Pictures and pay TV channels such as Comedy Central, MTV and BET, while CBS has a broadcast network, television stations, Showtime and a stake in The CW over-the-air network. MoffettNathanson analyst Michael...
Phoenix, AZ - Former major league pitcher Curt Schilling says he’s thinking about running for Congress in Arizona. Schilling confirmed in an email to The Arizona Republic on Monday that he’s considering a run. He declined to say which district he’d run in and wrote that “the illegal immigration issue is not a joke.” Schilling, 52, helped the Arizona Diamondbacks to its only World Series championship in 2001. He won another World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2004. He was later fired as an ESPN commentator for controversial online comments. He’s an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, who tweeted, “Curt Schilling, a great pitcher and patriot, is considering a run for Congress in Arizona. Terrific!” Schilling has ...
Chicago - Airbus is stretching its lead over Boeing in aircraft deliveries as Boeing continues to be held back by the grounding of its 737 Max. Chicago-based Boeing said Tuesday it delivered 19 planes in July, down from 39 in July 2018. It also reported that it received no new orders for the Max in July — the fourth straight month without an order. European rival Airbus reported 69 deliveries last month, including 52 A320neo and A321neo jets that compete with the Max. This year through July, Boeing has delivered 258 airliners. That’s down 38% from a year earlier, and far behind Airbus’ 458 deliveries. Boeing halted Max deliveries in March after the second of two crashes that together killed 346 people. New orders for Boeing jets have plunged 71% through t...
Washington - A top Trump administration official said Tuesday that the famous inscription on the Statue of Liberty welcoming immigrants into the country is about “people coming from Europe” and that America is looking to receive migrants “who can stand on their own two feet.” The comments from Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, came a day after the Trump administration announced it would seek to deny green cards to migrants who seek Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers or other forms of public assistance. The move — and Cuccinelli’s defense — prompted an outcry from Democrats and immigration advocates who said the policy would favor wealthier immigrants and disadvantage those from poorer countries ...

Billings, MT - A judge barred the Trump administration on Tuesday from acting on the recommendations of an energy advisory panel that was created to make it easier to extract fossil fuels from public lands and waters. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy sided with a Montana-based conservation group that alleged the Royalty Policy Committee had been established in violation of public transparency laws. The committee was disbanded without explanation in April when its two-year charter expired. Created in 2017 by then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the Royalty Policy Committee attracted sharp criticism from conservationists and others who said its membership was stacked in favor the energy industry. In a 28-page ruling, Molloy said a lawsuit from the Western Organization of Resource C...
It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either – - Rabbi Tarfon, Pirkei Avot 2:16 What is our obligation to create sanctuary – refuge – for those whose pain is unimaginable to us? “Then Moshe set aside three cities on the bank of the Jordan, on the east…” (Devarim 4:41).   When it comes to Torah, we pay attention not just to the words, but to the grammar as well.  There is no aspect of Torah that is “accidental” and therefore every word, every letter, every pasuk and its structure holds lessons for us.  So, when we read this pasuk we are, at first, troubled.  It stands out as being grammatically inconsistent.  Az yavdil translat...

Baltimore City teachers have placed an important item on their back to school wish list: Portable fans.  And they're asking the public to help pay for them. At last check, there were close to 60 Baltimore City school buildings without air conditioning. That alone was enough reason for the teacher's union to take matters into its own hands. Anticipating a repeat of last year when hot temperatures forced the city to close schools, the Baltimore Teachers' Union is turning to a cool solution. The goal is to pick up at least 500 fans. It's a drive that began late last week. Teachers said the help can't come soon enough. "All I can focus on is feeling that sweat just coming out and I look over at the kid and they're sweating, and all we want to do is take ...
A coalition of mostly Democratic-led states has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing its rules for addressing power plant pollution are so weak they violate federal law. Attorneys general from 22 states and several major cities including New York City and Los Angeles argue that the Trump administration’s rule violates the Clean Air Act by having virtually no impact on carbon emissions. The suit is the second against the rule, following one filed in July from the American Lung Association. Read more at The Hill.
Tax-free week started Sunday, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot promoted the weeklong shopping initiative Thursday at a family-owned Baltimore school store. Tax-free week begins Sunday and runs through next Saturday, which means there will be no state sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100. It's not only great news for shoppers, but also for business owners. "This week coming up, I think, will be the most busiest, most trafficked weeks in the shopping season, and it gets people back into shopping, even during the dog days of August," Franchot said. The Maryland Retailers Association is also sponsoring a scholarship contest for any student at a college, university or trade school.

Moshe desperately pleads with G-d to be granted entry to the land he has coveted for forty years; despite his furious prayers his request is denied. Despite the power of prayer to sway the Divine will, G-d reserves the right to deny our petitions. Sometimes He replies with a “Yes” and other times with a “No”. Still other times he replies with a “Yes” in a manner that we can’t fully comprehend. Either way there are no guarantees. Beyond his desire to visit the land of Israel in general, Moshe specifically craves a visit to the Temple Mount. Unlike the Avot- each of whom visited this hallowed site, Moshe was born and bred in Egypt and could only dream of ascending this mountain of G-d. Tragically, any actual visit remained beyond his grasp. The in...
