Billings, MT - A judge barred the Trump administration on Tuesday from acting on the recommendations of an energy advisory panel that was created to make it easier to extract fossil fuels from public lands and waters. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy sided with a Montana-based conservation group that alleged the Royalty Policy Committee had been established in violation of public transparency laws. The committee was disbanded without explanation in April when its two-year charter expired. Created in 2017 by then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the Royalty Policy Committee attracted sharp criticism from conservationists and others who said its membership was stacked in favor the energy industry. In a 28-page ruling, Molloy said a lawsuit from the Western Organization of Resource C...
It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either – - Rabbi Tarfon, Pirkei Avot 2:16 What is our obligation to create sanctuary – refuge – for those whose pain is unimaginable to us? “Then Moshe set aside three cities on the bank of the Jordan, on the east…” (Devarim 4:41).   When it comes to Torah, we pay attention not just to the words, but to the grammar as well.  There is no aspect of Torah that is “accidental” and therefore every word, every letter, every pasuk and its structure holds lessons for us.  So, when we read this pasuk we are, at first, troubled.  It stands out as being grammatically inconsistent.  Az yavdil translat...

Baltimore City teachers have placed an important item on their back to school wish list: Portable fans.  And they're asking the public to help pay for them. At last check, there were close to 60 Baltimore City school buildings without air conditioning. That alone was enough reason for the teacher's union to take matters into its own hands. Anticipating a repeat of last year when hot temperatures forced the city to close schools, the Baltimore Teachers' Union is turning to a cool solution. The goal is to pick up at least 500 fans. It's a drive that began late last week. Teachers said the help can't come soon enough. "All I can focus on is feeling that sweat just coming out and I look over at the kid and they're sweating, and all we want to do is take ...
A coalition of mostly Democratic-led states has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing its rules for addressing power plant pollution are so weak they violate federal law. Attorneys general from 22 states and several major cities including New York City and Los Angeles argue that the Trump administration’s rule violates the Clean Air Act by having virtually no impact on carbon emissions. The suit is the second against the rule, following one filed in July from the American Lung Association. Read more at The Hill.
Tax-free week started Sunday, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot promoted the weeklong shopping initiative Thursday at a family-owned Baltimore school store. Tax-free week begins Sunday and runs through next Saturday, which means there will be no state sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100. It's not only great news for shoppers, but also for business owners. "This week coming up, I think, will be the most busiest, most trafficked weeks in the shopping season, and it gets people back into shopping, even during the dog days of August," Franchot said. The Maryland Retailers Association is also sponsoring a scholarship contest for any student at a college, university or trade school.
As the Chosson and Kallah prepare to step out from under the chuppah, to begin their lives together – to build their home together, The Chosson breaks a glass to remind us all of the home; Yerushalayim and the Beis Hamikdash we once had. Now with the Bein HaMetzarim and Tisha B’Av behind us, we all get ready to go back to our day to day lives, we must never forget Yerushalayim. The following rendition of Al Naharot Bavel was originally recorded by Meydad Tasa on his debut album titled Al Naharot Bavel. Moshe desperately pleads with G-d to be granted entry to the land he has coveted for forty years; despite his furious prayers his request is denied. Despite the power of prayer to sway the Divine will, G-d reserves the right to deny our petitions. Sometimes He replies with a “Yes” and other times with a “No”. Still other times he replies with a “Yes” in a manner that we can’t fully comprehend. Either way there are no guarantees. Beyond his desire to visit the land of Israel in general, Moshe specifically craves a visit to the Temple Mount. Unlike the Avot- each of whom visited this hallowed site, Moshe was born and bred in Egypt and could only dream of ascending this mountain of G-d. Tragically, any actual visit remained beyond his grasp. The in...

We learn about the mitzvah of tefillin in Parshas Devarim, Perek Vov Posuk ches. The gemara in Brachos, daf chof gimmel, amud bais says in the name of Rav Yitzchok that if a person goes to eat a seudas keva, (full fledged meal) he should first remove his tefillin and then proceed to eat. There are two reasons why a person should not eat a seudas keva while wearing his tefillin. Firstly, Rashi and the Meiri explain the reasoning for this is due to the fact that a person may get drunk during his meal. The Tiferes Yisroel in Meseches Yodayim, Perek Bais, mishna daled, seif koton lamed heh is medayek from the words of Rashi that if one eats...

When the baby was delivered, we performed an APGAR test and continued with all the proper procedures for the mother to prepare her f...
Shai and Maayan Ben-Eli traveled the farthest – 5,863 miles from Yerushalayim – to attend the STAR-K Food Service Kashrus Training Seminar, held in the agency’s Baltimore offices, August 5-7. The Ben-Elis are being groomed not only as STAR-K mashgichim for their upcoming move to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India, but as the agency’s emissaries to the once-thriving Jewish community. There has been a Jewish presence in Kolkata since 1798, when a Syrian jewel trader, Shalom Cohen, migrated there. Other Jews followed, mostly from Iraq and Syria, who opened businesses and exported silk, indigo, and opium. By the last half of the 19th century, the city was bustling with 3,000 Jews. During World War II, the Jewish population peaked with those seeking refuge. The commun...
The man charged with killing 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue last year had a court hearing that lasted 4 minutes before prosecutors and lawyers agreed to a 120-day extension in the case. Authorities say Robert Bowers opened fire with an AR-15 rifle and other weapons during worship services inside Tree of Life synagogue, killing eight men and three women before police shot and wounded him. The case will be back in court in November. Prosecutors have not made a final decision on whether to seek the death penalty. Read more.

A treif restaurant in upstate New York has been using a fake hechsher and causing dozens of Jews to eat non kosher food this summer. The 24-hour Bistro, located in World Resort Casino in Monticello, New York 24-hour Bistro, located at Resort World Casino in Monticello, New York, is a completely treif eatery that has been tricking frum Jews into eating their food by hanging up a fake kashrus certificate. The outdated sign was brought to the restaurant by a conniving worker who got it from New York.
