Louisville, KY - Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan traveled to Kentucky to call on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring House-backed gun regulation bills to the U.S. Senate floor for a vote. Ryan, a Democrat running for president, led a “caravan” Thursday from northeast Ohio to McConnell’s hometown of Louisville. Hundreds of supporters of gun control legislation gathered at the city’s Muhammad Ali Center to hear Ryan and others. Ryan says he wants to get “weapons of war ... off the streets.” Nine people were killed Sunday in a mass shooting in Ryan’s home state, hours after a shooting at a Texas Walmart. U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth of Louisville said Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, wanted the rally held at the Ali Center. She says the late civil ri...
New Delhi - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the nation Thursday night that he stripped the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir of its statehood and special constitutional status to free the disputed region of “terrorism and separatism.” Modi’s Hindu-led nationalist government imposed an unprecedented security lockdown and a near-total communications blackout in the Muslim-majority region since Sunday night, arresting more than 500 people. Kashmir is claimed in full by both India and its archrival Pakistan, although each controls only a part of it and rebels have been fighting Indian rule in the portion it administers for decades. This week, India downgraded the Himalayan region from statehood to a territory, limited its decision-making power and eliminated its...
The prosecution will not change its decision to indict the minor accused in the Duma case with membership in a terrorist organization, despite the court's recommendation to reconsider it. The minor accused of involvement in murder in the village of Duma, admitted as part of a plea agreement of conspiring to ignite the family's home for a racist motive, and of involvement in other cases involving damage to Arab property. The parties did not reach an agreement on the indictment concerning membership in a terrorist organization and, as stated, it was ultimately decided to leave this section in the indictment. As part of the plea agreement, the prosecutor's office agreed not to demand more than 5.5 years in prison. The minor's attorneys, Attorney Adi Kedar of the Honenu...

Washington - According to a new report by CNN, Jared Kushner was the one who convinced President Trump to grant clemency to Shalom Rubashkin, not any of the senators or community leadrs as previously thought. Sholom Rubashkin, the former CEO of America’s largest kosher meat processing plant, was convicted in 2009 of a series of fraud charges. Rubashkin’s legal troubles began in 2008, when a federal immigration raid discovered nearly 400 undocumented workers at his plant in Iowa. This was one of the biggest immigration raids at the time. In the aftermath, the picture that emerged in court papers was of a chaotically run business. Reports around the trial noted that Rubashkin had used $300,000 of company money to pay his credit card bills and $200,000 on a home renovation. ...
London - Large chunks of Britain, including London, were hit with a power cut Friday afternoon that disrupted train travel and snarled rush-hour traffic. Power supplier National Grid said issues with two generators had caused a loss of power across parts of the country and that they had been resolved. Power failures were reported as far apart as London in southeast England and Cheshire in the northwest. Many people reported that the outage lasted just a few minutes, but the impact on travelers was severe. Transit operator Transport for London said some traffic lights in the city had been knocked out, and advised drivers to be careful. National Rail Enquiries, which is run by Britain’s train companies, said “power supply problems are currently causing disruption to a large n...

Lucas says the man had more than 100 rounds of ammunition. Lucas says an off-duty firefighter held the suspect, a 20-year-old man, at gunpoint until police arrived. He says: “His intent obviously was to cause chaos here, and he did that.” Th...
Washington - President Donald Trump on Thursday named Joseph Maguire, the nation’s top counterterrorism official, as acting national intelligence director, part of a leadership shake-up at the agency that oversees 17 U.S. spy agencies. Maguire will become acting director on Aug. 15, the same day that National Intelligence Director Dan Coats’ resignation takes effect. It’s also the same day that deputy national intelligence director Sue Gordon will be walking out the door. Democrats accused Trump of pushing out two dedicated intelligence professionals. “Admiral Maguire has a long and distinguished career in the military, retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2010,” Trump tweeted. “He commanded at every level, including the Naval Special Warfare Command. ...
Dallas - The remains of an Air Force pilot whose plane was shot down in 1967 during the Vietnam War have been returned to Texas by a commercial jet flown by his son. The remains of 36-year-old Col. Roy Knight Jr. of Millsap arrived Thursday at Dallas Love Field. Southwest Airlines Capt. Bryan Knight flew the plane transporting the flag-draped casket. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency says Roy Knight, whose remains were accounted for in June, will be buried Saturday in Weatherford. That’s 50 miles (80.46 kilometers) west of Dallas. Knight in May 1967 was with the 602nd Tactical Fighter Squadron and leading a strike mission in Laos when his plane was shot down. Military officials say the crash site was searched several times since the 1990s. Searches this year led to remains li...
Washington - Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a frequent target of President Donald Trump’s ire, sued the FBI and the Justice Department on Thursday over his firing. The lawsuit, the second this week from an ex-FBI official challenging the circumstances of his termination, says the firing was part of Trump’s plan to rid the bureau of leaders he perceived as disloyal to him. The complaint contends that the two officials responsible for demoting and then firing McCabe — FBI Director Chris Wray and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions — created a pretext to force him out in accordance with the president’s wishes. The stated reason for the firing was that McCabe had misled investigators over his involvement in a news media leak, but McCabe says ...

The ride-hailing giant said Wednesday it paid $3.9 billion in stock-based compensation and expenses during the quarter. It also paid $298 million in stock and cash to drivers to show appreciation in connection with its IPO. The loss per share including those expenses totaled $4.72 while revenue jumped 14% to $3.17 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected a loss of $2.03 per share on revenue of $3.31 billion, on average, but those analysts typically exclude one-time expenses such as IPO-related costs. Uber continued to spend heavily on sales and marketing, which includes costly promotions ...
Louisville, KY - The Republican Party, the Trump campaign and other GOP organizations said Thursday that they are freezing their spending on Twitter to protest the platform’s treatment of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Twitter temporarily locked McConnell’s campaign account Wednesday after it shared a video in which some protesters spoke of violence outside his Kentucky home, where he is recovering from a shoulder fracture. The social media platform said in a statement that users were locked out temporarily due to a tweet “that violated our violent threats policy, specifically threats involving physical safety.” The statement did not indicate exactly how long the account was frozen, saying only that it was temporary. The account was active Thursday, but n...
