Bilaam tells Balak the Jews are impervious to his curses, for “Who has counted the dust of Yaakov, or who can number the seed of Israel”.    Rashi explains the first half of this verse as referring to the ‘countless’ mitzvos that are fulfilled with עפר, ‘dust’:  You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey [together]; You shall not sow your field with a mixture of seeds, the ashes of the red cow, the dust used for a woman, a Sotah, suspected of infidelity, and others similar to these. The second half of the verse alludes to G-d attending to each potential ‘seed’ during copulation, wondering when will the drop of the righteous one come to fruition. What is so unique about the various mitzvos that revolve around ‘dust&r...
The Senate will vote next week on a House-passed bill to extend the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.   Under a deal reached on the Senate floor, lawmakers will vote on the bill by next Wednesday. As part of the agreement they are expected to also vote on two amendments to the bill, one from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and one from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).  The bill, which passed the House in a 402-12 vote, would reauthorize funding through fiscal 2090. It's expected to easily pass the Senate. Lee, before setting up the agreement, stressed that he supported extending money for the fund, which pays out claims for deaths and illnesses related to the attack, but had concerns for how long the House bill would extend it for.    "In Washing...
Illnesses related to the 9/11 attacks claimed their 200th New York firefighter this week. Firefighters Kevin Nolan and Richard Driscoll died on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) confirmed to The Hill on Thursday. “It is almost incomprehensible that, after losing 343 members on September 11, we have now had 200 more FDNY members die from World Trade Center illnesses," Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said in a statement. "These heroes gave their lives bravely fighting to rescue and recover others. We will never forget them.” Their deaths come as lawmakers advance a bill to authorize funding for the Sept. 11, 2001, victims compensation fund through 2090. The House passed the legislation last week. Sen...
Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency project got a second day of withering criticism on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, with one California congressman saying its potential dangers could be worse than the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. ‘The most innovative thing that happened this century is when Osama bin Laden came up with the innovative idea of flying two airplanes into towers. That’s the most consequential innovation, although this may do more to endanger America than even that.’Rep. Brad Sherman As Sherman compared Libra with the 9/11 attacks, he said that Zuckerberg is creating a cryptocurrency, like the popular and controversial digital-asset bitcoin that is often associated with providing “privacy to drug dealers, human traffickers, terrorists, tax evade...
A Democratic candidate vying for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives reportedly fatally shot his wife and then himself on Tuesday, police said. Carl Robinson, 43, entered the Williams Medical Clinic in Potts Camp, Miss., — where his estranged wife, 34-year-old Latoya Thompson, was working at the front desk — on Tuesday morning, NBC News reports. Robinson pulled a gun on Thompson and shot her before hopping over the counter and shooting himself, Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson told the network. Officers responded to the scene at about 10 a.m., and Thompson died before a helicopter could get her to a hospital. "We found the shooter dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head," Dickerson said. Robinson and Thompson...

The residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, could be without water service until Friday morning, thanks to a water main break, according to a news release from the city. The service outage will also impact surrounding municipalities that receive their water through the city, including Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac, according to the city's Twitter page. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in a news conference that a 42-inch water main was damaged Wednesday by a subcontractor working to repair electric lines near the city's Executive Airport for Florida Power & Light. Crews responded immediately, but as they were working, the damaged pipe collapsed, forcing the city to turn off the water flow...
Washington - President Donald Trump says a U.S. warship destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between the two countries. Trump says it’s the latest “hostile” action by Iran. He’s calling on other countries to condemn what he says are Iran’s attempts to disrupt the freedom of navigation and global commerce in the strategic waterway in the Persian Gulf region. Trump says the USS Boxer took defensive action after the drone closed to within 1,000 yards of the warship and ignored multiple calls to stand down. The president says the drone threatened the safety of the American ship and its crew. Iran recently shot down a U.S. drone that it said was flying over Iran. Trump called off a planned retaliatory airstrike at the last...

Warning of national security and privacy risks for millions of Americans, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urged the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate FaceApp, the viral age-defying photo program that has raised fresh concerns about facial recognition and data protection. In a Wednesday letter, Schumer called on the FBI to assess whether personal data uploaded into FaceApp “may be finding its way into the hands of the Russian government” or groups associated with Moscow. FaceApp’s developers are headquartered in St. Petersburg, and on Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee warned presidential campaigns against using FaceApp because of its Russia roots. Schumer said that FaceApp’s origins “raise questions regarding how and...
The parents of an American victim of a devastating Palestinian suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 2001 are calling on the US Congress to investigate why one of the planners of the atrocity — Hamas terrorist Ahlam al-Tamimi — remains at large in Jordan, nearly three years after the US Department of Justice issued a warrant for her arrest. Arnold Roth — whose 15-year-old daughter Malki was murdered in the Aug. 9, 2001 attack at a Sbarro pizza restaurant in downtown Jerusalem, in which Tamimi played a key operational role — told The Algemeiner on Wednesday that he and his wife, Frimet, were urging American legislators to probe concerns that efforts to bring Tamimi to justice had been subordinated to continued good relations with Jordan. The Hashemite kingdom’s hig...
Jerusalem - On Wednesday, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar announced that she will be visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories in the coming weeks. Omar will be accompanied by Rep. Rashida Tlaib. The two freshman congresswomen have become a focal point of the Jewish community after expressing numerous controversial comments regarding Israel and several statements that were deemed anitsemitic. The congresswoman said she would travel to Israel on the same day that she introduced a new “pro-boycott” of Israel resolution in Congress “affirming that all Americans have the right to participate in boycotts in pursuit of civil and human rights at home and abroad, as protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.” Omar’s action was in response to the House For...
Washington - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it’s time to “lower the rhetoric” about racism. He’s also rejecting an assertion by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that he helped further racism by not criticizing recent comments by President Donald Trump. The Kentucky Republican says on the Fox Business Network that Ocasio-Cortez’ accusation is “nonsense.” He says he attended Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and President Lyndon Johnson’s signing of the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s. McConnell says he agrees with Trump that Ocasio-Cortez and three other young congressional Democrats want to make the U.S. socialist. He didn’t mention Trump’s comments at a rally suggesting the fou...
Washington - President Donald Trump said Thursday he was unhappy with his supporters chanting “send her back” after he assailed a young Democratic congresswoman who he’s suggested should leave the U.S. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump claimed he tried to stop the chant, which came after he recited a litany of complaints about Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who fled to the U.S. as a child with her family from violence-wracked Somalia. Video shows the president pausing his remarks, appearing to drink in the uproar and not admonishing his supporters as they chanted. “I was not happy with it,” Trump said a day later as some prominent Republicans criticized the chant at the president’s re-election event. He said he “would certainly try” to stop...
Buenos Aires - Fire department sirens have sounded across the Argentine capital to honor 85 people who died 25 years ago in the nation’s worst terrorist attack — the bombing of a Jewish center. Argentine prosecutors blame Iranian officials for plotting the attack on the Argentine-Israelite Mutual Association and say the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah carried it out. But nobody has been convicted despite years of investigations. Earlier attempts at prosecutions collapsed. Iran has refused to turn over the people who now face charges, and denies any involvement. Prosecutor Alberto Nisman in 2015 accused former President Cristina Fernandez of helping cover up the case, which she denies. Nisman was found dead in his apartment days later. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is ...
