The residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, could be without water service until Friday morning, thanks to a water main break, according to a news release from the city.
The service outage will also impact surrounding municipalities that receive their water through the city, including Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac, according to the city's Twitter page.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in a news conference that a 42-inch water main was damaged Wednesday by a subcontractor working to repair electric lines near the city's Executive Airport for Florida Power & Light.

Jerusalem - On Wednesday, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar announced that she will be visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories in the coming weeks.

Washington - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it’s time to “lower the rhetoric” about racism.
He’s also rejecting an assertion by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that he helped further racism by not criticizing recent comments by President Donald Trump.
The Kentucky Republican says on the Fox Business Network that Ocasio-Cortez’ accusation is “nonsense.” He says he attended Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and President Lyndon Johnson’s signing of the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s.

WASHINGTON (WASHINGTON POST) - Uber passengers in multiple cities were startled on Wednesday (July 17) when they were charged 100 times their normal fare for short trips, a glitch that sparked jokes about surge pricing gone wild.
Riders in cities, including Washington and San Diego, took to social media to post about the sky-high rates, a problem Uber confirmed, though it declined to say how widespread the issue was.
Some who ordered food for quick delivery said they were also overcharged.
One social media user reported that Uber maxed out her husband's card with a charge of US$1,905 (S$2,592.25), when it was supposed to be $19.05.

Washington - House Democrats approved legislation Thursday to raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade, to $15 an hour, but the bill has almost no chance in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Passage was assured after centrists won concessions for a slower phase-in, over six years instead of five. They also won assurances the pay hike could be halted midway if a study shows job losses or other adverse effects.
A hike in the $7.25 hourly wage has been a top Democratic campaign promise, intended to address income inequality that’s driving the 2020 political debate. Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said raising the wage is the “right thing to do.”

An Alabama police officer was shot and wounded and a suspect was killed after an armed robbery at a local convenience store turned into a deadly shootout Wednesday night.
Police were dispatched to the 500 block of 23rd St. N. in downtown Birmingham at about 6:30 p.m. amid reports of an armed robbery in progress at a convenience store, Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith told reporters.
Once on the scene, officers said they saw a man fleeing the area that matched the description of the suspect involved. Smith said the officers encountered the man and attempted to stop him when he pulled out a handgun and began firing.
He fired several rounds and struck Officer Cullen Stafford “multiples times.”

A German woman attempted to buy a vehicle from a car dealership in the southwestern city of Kaiserslautern Friday using counterfeit currency she printed off at home.
She carried a wad of €15,000 ($16,830) to the dealership in Kaiserslautern, only for her plan to backfire as she left the location in handcuffs and riding in the back of a police car.
Exposing the woman’s plan did not require keen investigative skills, after she opted to print the bogus 50 and 100-euro notes via a regular ink jet printer, according to German news outlet DW News.

Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump faced criticism for saying Pakistan’s arrest of the alleged mastermind of the 2008 attacks on Mumbai had come after a 10-year search, as the suspected militant had been living in plain view.
Pakistani authorities on Wednesday arrested Hafiz Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group that is accused by India and the United States of carrying out the Mumbai attacks, on terrorism financing charges.
More than 160 people were killed in the four-day militant attacks. Saeed is designated a terrorist by the United States and the United Nations.

Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday blocked an attempt by Democrats to pass an extension of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand tried to win the Senate’s consent to approve the House-passed bill, which would reauthorize funding until fiscal 2090. The bill cleared the House in a 402-12 vote last week.
But Paul objected, pointing to the country’s growing debt and arguing that any new spending should be offset by cuts to other spending.
He added that if the House bill was brought up for a vote in the Senate he is planning to offer an amendment, “but until then I will object.”
