The residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, could be without water service until Friday morning, thanks to a water main break, according to a news release from the city. The service outage will also impact surrounding municipalities that receive their water through the city, including Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac, according to the city's Twitter page. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in a news conference that a 42-inch water main was damaged Wednesday by a subcontractor working to repair electric lines near the city's Executive Airport for Florida Power & Light. Crews responded immediately, but as they were working, the damaged pipe collapsed, forcing the city to turn off the water flow...
Washington - President Donald Trump says a U.S. warship destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between the two countries. Trump says it’s the latest “hostile” action by Iran. He’s calling on other countries to condemn what he says are Iran’s attempts to disrupt the freedom of navigation and global commerce in the strategic waterway in the Persian Gulf region. Trump says the USS Boxer took defensive action after the drone closed to within 1,000 yards of the warship and ignored multiple calls to stand down. The president says the drone threatened the safety of the American ship and its crew. Iran recently shot down a U.S. drone that it said was flying over Iran. Trump called off a planned retaliatory airstrike at the last...

Warning of national security and privacy risks for millions of Americans, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urged the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate FaceApp, the viral age-defying photo program that has raised fresh concerns about facial recognition and data protection. In a Wednesday letter, Schumer called on the FBI to assess whether personal data uploaded into FaceApp “may be finding its way into the hands of the Russian government” or groups associated with Moscow. FaceApp’s developers are headquartered in St. Petersburg, and on Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee warned presidential campaigns against using FaceApp because of its Russia roots. Schumer said that FaceApp’s origins “raise questions regarding how and...
The parents of an American victim of a devastating Palestinian suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 2001 are calling on the US Congress to investigate why one of the planners of the atrocity — Hamas terrorist Ahlam al-Tamimi — remains at large in Jordan, nearly three years after the US Department of Justice issued a warrant for her arrest. Arnold Roth — whose 15-year-old daughter Malki was murdered in the Aug. 9, 2001 attack at a Sbarro pizza restaurant in downtown Jerusalem, in which Tamimi played a key operational role — told The Algemeiner on Wednesday that he and his wife, Frimet, were urging American legislators to probe concerns that efforts to bring Tamimi to justice had been subordinated to continued good relations with Jordan. The Hashemite kingdom’s hig...
Jerusalem - On Wednesday, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar announced that she will be visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories in the coming weeks. Omar will be accompanied by Rep. Rashida Tlaib. The two freshman congresswomen have become a focal point of the Jewish community after expressing numerous controversial comments regarding Israel and several statements that were deemed anitsemitic. The congresswoman said she would travel to Israel on the same day that she introduced a new “pro-boycott” of Israel resolution in Congress “affirming that all Americans have the right to participate in boycotts in pursuit of civil and human rights at home and abroad, as protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.” Omar’s action was in response to the House For...
Washington - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it’s time to “lower the rhetoric” about racism. He’s also rejecting an assertion by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that he helped further racism by not criticizing recent comments by President Donald Trump. The Kentucky Republican says on the Fox Business Network that Ocasio-Cortez’ accusation is “nonsense.” He says he attended Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and President Lyndon Johnson’s signing of the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s. McConnell says he agrees with Trump that Ocasio-Cortez and three other young congressional Democrats want to make the U.S. socialist. He didn’t mention Trump’s comments at a rally suggesting the fou...
Washington - President Donald Trump said Thursday he was unhappy with his supporters chanting “send her back” after he assailed a young Democratic congresswoman who he’s suggested should leave the U.S. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump claimed he tried to stop the chant, which came after he recited a litany of complaints about Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who fled to the U.S. as a child with her family from violence-wracked Somalia. Video shows the president pausing his remarks, appearing to drink in the uproar and not admonishing his supporters as they chanted. “I was not happy with it,” Trump said a day later as some prominent Republicans criticized the chant at the president’s re-election event. He said he “would certainly try” to stop...
Buenos Aires - Fire department sirens have sounded across the Argentine capital to honor 85 people who died 25 years ago in the nation’s worst terrorist attack — the bombing of a Jewish center. Argentine prosecutors blame Iranian officials for plotting the attack on the Argentine-Israelite Mutual Association and say the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah carried it out. But nobody has been convicted despite years of investigations. Earlier attempts at prosecutions collapsed. Iran has refused to turn over the people who now face charges, and denies any involvement. Prosecutor Alberto Nisman in 2015 accused former President Cristina Fernandez of helping cover up the case, which she denies. Nisman was found dead in his apartment days later. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is ...

WASHINGTON (WASHINGTON POST) - Uber passengers in multiple cities were startled on Wednesday (July 17) when they were charged 100 times their normal fare for short trips, a glitch that sparked jokes about surge pricing gone wild. Riders in cities, including Washington and San Diego, took to social media to post about the sky-high rates, a problem Uber confirmed, though it declined to say how widespread the issue was. Some who ordered food for quick delivery said they were also overcharged. One social media user reported that Uber maxed out her husband's card with a charge of US$1,905 (S$2,592.25), when it was supposed to be $19.05. "Not cool, especially on his birthday," she added. Another woman posted to social media she was charged US$1,308 for a US$13.08 trip. The charge was s...
Washington - House Democrats approved legislation Thursday to raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade, to $15 an hour, but the bill has almost no chance in the Republican-controlled Senate. Passage was assured after centrists won concessions for a slower phase-in, over six years instead of five. They also won assurances the pay hike could be halted midway if a study shows job losses or other adverse effects. A hike in the $7.25 hourly wage has been a top Democratic campaign promise, intended to address income inequality that’s driving the 2020 political debate. Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said raising the wage is the “right thing to do.” “America’s workers deserve a raise,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi at a pr...
An Alabama police officer was shot and wounded and a suspect was killed after an armed robbery at a local convenience store turned into a deadly shootout Wednesday night. Police were dispatched to the 500 block of 23rd St. N. in downtown Birmingham at about 6:30 p.m. amid reports of an armed robbery in progress at a convenience store, Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith told reporters. Once on the scene, officers said they saw a man fleeing the area that matched the description of the suspect involved. Smith said the officers encountered the man and attempted to stop him when he pulled out a handgun and began firing. He fired several rounds and struck Officer Cullen Stafford “multiples times.” Stafford was seriously injured as fellow officers...
A German woman attempted to buy a vehicle from a car dealership in the southwestern city of Kaiserslautern Friday using counterfeit currency she printed off at home. She carried a wad of €15,000 ($16,830) to the dealership in Kaiserslautern, only for her plan to backfire as she left the location in handcuffs and riding in the back of a police car. Exposing the woman’s plan did not require keen investigative skills, after she opted to print the bogus 50 and 100-euro notes via a regular ink jet printer, according to German news outlet DW News. When police searched the 20-year-old woman’s home in the nearby city of Pirmasens, 21 miles south of Kaiserslautern, they found the printer loaded with freshly printed “money&r...
Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump faced criticism for saying Pakistan’s arrest of the alleged mastermind of the 2008 attacks on Mumbai had come after a 10-year search, as the suspected militant had been living in plain view. Pakistani authorities on Wednesday arrested Hafiz Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group that is accused by India and the United States of carrying out the Mumbai attacks, on terrorism financing charges. More than 160 people were killed in the four-day militant attacks. Saeed is designated a terrorist by the United States and the United Nations. Trump, who is due to host Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for talks at the White House next week, welcomed Saeed’s arrest and said it was the result of pressure from his administration...
Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday blocked an attempt by Democrats to pass an extension of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand tried to win the Senate’s consent to approve the House-passed bill, which would reauthorize funding until fiscal 2090. The bill cleared the House in a 402-12 vote last week. But Paul objected, pointing to the country’s growing debt and arguing that any new spending should be offset by cuts to other spending. He added that if the House bill was brought up for a vote in the Senate he is planning to offer an amendment, “but until then I will object.” Read more at The Hill.
