Canberra, Australasia - Four children aged 10 to 14 packed fishing rods in a parent’s SUV, left a farewell note then drove more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) down the Australian east coast before they were stopped by police the next day, an officer said on Monday. When the children were stopped by police near Grafton in New South Wales state at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, they locked the doors and refused to get out, Acting Police Inspector Darren Williams said. A police officer used a baton to break a window of the Nissan Patrol, that had been reported stolen, Williams said. Police were not sure which child or children drove or why they left Rockhampton in Queensland state on Saturday. The children are a 14-year-old boy, two 13-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl. Dr. Fouad M. AbdelWahed, an Egyptian professor of Hebrew at King Saud University, said in an episode of the anti-Semitic Egyptian TV show “Blue Line” that aired last month that some Jews eat matzah on Pesach that contain human blood. He said that he believes that some members of the community donate the blood for the purpose of preparing the matzah, and that the practice, which he said is today limited to “extremist” charedi Jews, was once widespread among Jews. Abdel Wahed also said that the consumption of this matzah has negative effects on one’s health. The show aired on Channel 2 TV (Egypt).
Thousands of people in Sweden are having futuristic microchips implanted into their skin to carry out everyday activities and replace credit cards and cash. More than 4,000 people have already had the sci-fi-like chips, about the size of a grain of rice, inserted into their hands — with the pioneers predicting millions will soon join them as they hope to take it global. Like glorified smartwatches, the chips help Swedes monitor their health, replace keycards to allow them to enter offices and buildings and enabling owners to pay in stores with a simple swipe of the hand, a big deal in a forward-looking country that is moving towards eliminating cash. New York - In a scathing op-ed published Sunday night, The New York Post slammed New York City Mayor de Blasio, calling for his removal from office because of his handling of the Saturday night blackout that hit Midtown, leaving tens of thousands in the dark in the midst of the summer’s heat and humidity. The Post op-ed (nyp.st/2Gd5SlE) described de Blasio’s performance as lackluster, blasting him for his perpetual lateness and for spending hundreds of millions of dollars on pet projects that produce little results, including his wife Chirlane McCray’s Thrive NYC mental health initiative which received $850 million in city funding.  The Post also alleged that the city’s current safe environment is due to programs introduced by de Blasio’s predecessors an...
West Bank - Palestinians on Monday denounced President Donald Trump’s attack on U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, accusing him of racism and saying it once again proves his bias against the Palestinian people. Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat and daughter of Palestinian immigrants, was one of four congresswomen of color who were targeted in a Trump Twitter barrage over the weekend. Trump said the women should go back to the “broken and crime infested” places they came from, ignoring the fact that all are American citizens and three, including Tlaib, were born in the U.S. Trump also accused them of saying “terrible things” about the U.S. and said they “hate Israel.” Although Tlaib has never lived in the West Bank, she still has relatives in the area and is wide...
Dear Friends, Congress is currently considering two key bills that will significantly boost security for our community institutions - shuls, schools, religious facilities, charitable and social service centers - under the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). Facing an increasing threat of violence - including murderous attacks this past year in Pittsburgh and Poway -- the Jewish community has a strong stake in this program and must support Congress's efforts to strengthen it! The NSGP provides assistance (in many cases up to $150,000) to nonprofits to make security enhancements to their facilities. These enhancements may include security cameras, concrete barriers, reinforced doors, etc. It may also include in certain circumstances security personnel. Eligible nonprofits mus...

Michael Neuman of Miami Beach, grandson of David & Celia Neuman of Baltimore and Florida, said he’s always been an athletic person who loves sports, but as an observant Orthodox Jew, he faced an obstacle to improve his skills as a child with leagues typically played on Saturdays during the Sabbath. However, a dream was fulfilled for Neuman, 26, when he competed on the CBS Show “Million Dollar Mile” wearing a yarmulke. The show, produced by LeBron James and hosted by Tim Tebow, features amateur athletes who compete against professional athletes in a mile-long obstacle course for a chance to win $1 million dollars. Neuman’s segment, which has already been filmed, airs during the July 13 episode at 9 p.m. on CBS. “I’m incred...
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks edged lower in early trading Monday on Wall Street as a decline in banks offset solid gains in technology companies. The losses follow record high finishes for every major stock index last week. The S&P 500 index also pushed above 3,000 for the first time. Citi led banks lower, despite reporting a jump in profit that beat Wall Street forecasts. It is the first of the major U.S. banks to report second quarter financial results. The sector is currently under the shadow of expected interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The move would hurt their ability to charge more interest on loans. Broadcom helped lift the technology sector on reports that it has ceased negotiations with Symantec, a security software maker. Apple also made solid gains. Boeing weig...

Brussels - European Union nations were looking to deescalate tensions in the Persian Gulf area on Monday and call on Iran to stick to the 2015 nuclear deal, despite the pullout of the United States from the accord and the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions on Tehran. Dutch foreign minister Stef Blok said that “it is still not too late, but Iran really has to stick to its obligations.” Iran recently begun surpassing uranium enrichment limits set in its 2015 nuclear deal, saying these moves can be reversed if the other parties to the agreement — Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia and the European Union — come up with enough economic incentives to effectively offset the U.S. sanctions. But EU foreign ministers first and foremost want to get Iran to respect the ter...
Hillary Clinton on Sunday night criticized President Trump for suggesting that freshman Democrats “go back” to the countries they’re from — saying it’s his government that needs help. “They’re from America,” Clinton wrote about three of the freshman Democrats — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley — who Trump told to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Clinton continued, “and you’re right about one thing: Currently their government is a complete and total catastrophe.” Read more at THE NY POST.
Jerusalem - Israel’s beach season is in full swing and the annual jellyfish season has also begun, inconveniencing local beachgoers and tourists alike. The swarm, consisting of tens of millions of jellyfish, has reached Israel’s coast over the past week. Israelis have come to know the phenomenon far too well. The marine animals spoil the beach experience for beach lovers across Israel’s beaches every year, with painful stings that render the water almost inaccessible. Luckily, the plague lasts only a few weeks. The swarm has also become the cause of concern for industry, as they invaded a power station in southern Israel. Concerns have also been raised over the creatures’ effect on local marine life. Dr. Tamar Lotan and Professor Dror Angel, experts at the Univer...
Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump has told aides and allies that he is considering removing Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross after a Supreme Court defeat on adding a citizenship question to the census, NBC News reported on Monday. Trump retreated on Thursday from adding a contentious question on citizenship to the 2020 census, but insisted he was not giving up his fight to count how many non-citizens are in the country and ordered government agencies to mine their databases. Although Trump has previously been frustrated with Ross, in particular over some failed trade negotiations, the 81-year-old commerce secretary has so far kept his job. Read more at Reuters
