Michael Neuman of Miami Beach, grandson of David & Celia Neuman of Baltimore and Florida, said he’s always been an athletic person who loves sports, but as an observant Orthodox Jew, he faced an obstacle to improve his skills as a child with leagues typically played on Saturdays during the Sabbath. However, a dream was fulfilled for Neuman, 26, when he competed on the CBS Show “Million Dollar Mile” wearing a yarmulke. The show, produced by LeBron James and hosted by Tim Tebow, features amateur athletes who compete against professional athletes in a mile-long obstacle course for a chance to win $1 million dollars. Neuman’s segment, which has already been filmed, airs during the July 13 episode at 9 p.m. on CBS. “I’m incred...
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks edged lower in early trading Monday on Wall Street as a decline in banks offset solid gains in technology companies. The losses follow record high finishes for every major stock index last week. The S&P 500 index also pushed above 3,000 for the first time. Citi led banks lower, despite reporting a jump in profit that beat Wall Street forecasts. It is the first of the major U.S. banks to report second quarter financial results. The sector is currently under the shadow of expected interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The move would hurt their ability to charge more interest on loans. Broadcom helped lift the technology sector on reports that it has ceased negotiations with Symantec, a security software maker. Apple also made solid gains. Boeing weig...
New York - Amazon.com Inc’s Prime Day is now a major marketing opportunity and shopping event in the annual calendar for other U.S. retail companies, rivaling the Thanksgiving holiday’s Black Friday as a driver of sales. Target announced deal days which will run on the same days as Prime Day - July 15 and 16. Walmart offered promotions from July 14th-17th, while eBay announced a July 15 “crash sale.” “As the awareness of this shopping moment continues to build, we see this as a great opportunity to showcase our competitive advantage on price and inventory,” an eBay spokesperson said. Brussels - European Union nations were looking to deescalate tensions in the Persian Gulf area on Monday and call on Iran to stick to the 2015 nuclear deal, despite the pullout of the United States from the accord and the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions on Tehran. Dutch foreign minister Stef Blok said that “it is still not too late, but Iran really has to stick to its obligations.” Iran recently begun surpassing uranium enrichment limits set in its 2015 nuclear deal, saying these moves can be reversed if the other parties to the agreement — Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia and the European Union — come up with enough economic incentives to effectively offset the U.S. sanctions. But EU foreign ministers first and foremost want to get Iran to respect the ter...
Hillary Clinton on Sunday night criticized President Trump for suggesting that freshman Democrats “go back” to the countries they’re from — saying it’s his government that needs help. “They’re from America,” Clinton wrote about three of the freshman Democrats — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley — who Trump told to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Clinton continued, “and you’re right about one thing: Currently their government is a complete and total catastrophe.” Read more at THE NY POST.
Jerusalem - Israel’s beach season is in full swing and the annual jellyfish season has also begun, inconveniencing local beachgoers and tourists alike. The swarm, consisting of tens of millions of jellyfish, has reached Israel’s coast over the past week. Israelis have come to know the phenomenon far too well. The marine animals spoil the beach experience for beach lovers across Israel’s beaches every year, with painful stings that render the water almost inaccessible. Luckily, the plague lasts only a few weeks. The swarm has also become the cause of concern for industry, as they invaded a power station in southern Israel. Concerns have also been raised over the creatures’ effect on local marine life. Dr. Tamar Lotan and Professor Dror Angel, experts at the Univer...
Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump has told aides and allies that he is considering removing Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross after a Supreme Court defeat on adding a citizenship question to the census, NBC News reported on Monday. Trump retreated on Thursday from adding a contentious question on citizenship to the 2020 census, but insisted he was not giving up his fight to count how many non-citizens are in the country and ordered government agencies to mine their databases. Although Trump has previously been frustrated with Ross, in particular over some failed trade negotiations, the 81-year-old commerce secretary has so far kept his job. Read more at Reuters
The Trump administration on Monday announced a sweeping new policy tightening restrictions for asylum seekers, in a move that could drastically reduce the number of migrants eligible to enter the United States in this way. The new rule, published in the Federal Register, would require most migrants entering through America’s southern border to first seek asylum in one of the countries they traversed – whether in Mexico, in Central America, or elsewhere on their journey. In most cases, only if that application is denied would they then be able to seek asylum in the United States. "While the recent supplemental funding was absolutely vital to helping confront the crisis, the truth is that it will not be enough without targeted changes to the legal framework ...
Rome - Police in northern Italy have detained three men, including one linked to a neo-fascist Italian political party, after uncovering a huge stash of automatic weapons, a missile and material featuring Nazi symbols. Police said the discoveries stemmed from a previous investigation into Italians who took part in the Russian-backed insurgency in eastern Ukraine. In a statement Monday, Turin police said one of the men arrested had in 2001 run unsuccessfully as a Senate candidate for the neo-fascist Forza Nuova party. At his home in Gallarate, police found nine assault weapons, nearly 30 hunting rifles, pistols and bayonets as well as ammunition and antique Nazi plaques featuring swastikas. Two other men were detained after police found a French-made missile at an airport hangar that the...
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday ruled in favor of the Trump administration, saying the Department of Justice could give preference in awarding grants to cities that would use the money to focus on illegal immigration, as the federal government prepares to seek out undocumented immigrants in raids this weekend. The City of Los Angeles sued the Department of Justice because it did not receive any funding from the Community Oriented Policing Services grant program, which is aimed at initiatives to build trust between communities and law enforcement agencies. Los Angeles chose "building trust and respect" as its focus area and did not mention illegal immigration in its application because of its policy as a sanctuary city. The panel of judges ruled that ...
The recent explosive story about a terrible IVF mix-up has sparked conversation about the need to have halachic supervision at fertility treatments. Some used this story to urge frum couples who are undergoing fertility treatments to make sure they have halachic supervision when going for fertility treatment. It is important to know that the opinions of Gedolei Haposkim is that while having supervision is a good thing, it is not a requirement. The reason? Switches are extraordinarily uncommon, which is why this recent story has made the news. In fact, it is more common for hospital staff to switch babies at birth than for there to be an IVF mix up. For proper context, here is the story which was widely reported this past week: “Anni and Ashot Manukyan had spent several mo...
Joe Biden plans to unveil a proposal Monday to expand the Affordable Care Act with an optional public health insurance program, escalating a fierce debate with his Democratic rivals who favor a more sweeping Medicare-for-all system. Biden’s plan, which campaign officials estimate would cost $750 billion over 10 years, would also expand tax credits to pay for health premiums, and it would create a new coverage option to help people living in states that have resisted the ACA’s expansion of Medicaid. The plan, which will formalize ideas Biden has campaigned on for months, sharpens one of the biggest dividing lines in the Democratic presidential primary. One on side are traditional Democrats such as the former vice president, who warn that scrapping President Barack Obama’...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Starkly injecting race into his criticism of liberal Democrats, President Donald Trump said four congresswomen of color should go back to the “broken and crime infested” countries they came from, ignoring the fact that all of the women are American citizens and three were born in the U.S. His attack drew a searing condemnation from Democrats who labeled the remarks racist and breathtakingly divisive. Following a familiar script, Republicans remained largely silent after Trump’s Sunday morning broadsides against the four women. But the president’s nativist tweets caused Democrats to set aside their internal rifts to rise up in a united chorus against the president. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump wants to “make America white agai...
European diplomats gathering Monday to try to save the Iran nuclear deal warned that the agreement was close to unraveling, but several held out hope that they would be able to lure Tehran back into compliance. Britain, France and Germany have been reluctant to reimpose sanctions on Iran despite its decision to breach nuclear enrichment limits in recent weeks, saying that they still believe they may be able to save the deal through negotiations with Tehran. “We think there is a closing but small window to keep the deal alive,” British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Monday on his way into a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. “What we’re looking for is to give Iran a way out of this.” European countries are racing to put together a complicated t...
