WASHINGTON — Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby testified Wednesday morning before a congressional panel to support federal decriminalization and legalization of marijuana possession.
Mosby announced in January that a new policy has been set so that marijuana possession cases will no longer be prosecuted in Baltimore.
She testified Wednesday before the U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security at what's being called the first hearing on ending the federal prohibition of marijuana.
"The reason I'm here today is because there is no better illumination of this country's failed war on drugs than the city of Baltimore, Maryland," Mosby said.
A significant takeaway from the House hearing was that the debat...
Dallas County Judge Lela Mays on Wednesday approved an Oct. 10 death date for Randy Halprin, a Jewish prisoner sent to death row for his role in a 2000 prison escape and crime spree that left dead Irving police Officer Aubrey Hawkins.
Now 41, Halprin and six other men took hostages in December of 2000 and broke out of the Connally Unit south of San Antonio, fleeing to Houston in a getaway van where they pulled off two robberies to stock up on supplies, guns and money.
On Christmas Eve, the escapees held up an Oshman’s sporting goods store in Irving – and Hawkins, who was the first officer who responded to the call was shot 11 times and dragged 10 feet by an SUV as the panicked prisoners fled with $70,000 and 44 guns.
Aside from Halprin, only one other Texas 7 pris...

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee sent out a pair of tweets Wednesday and earlier this month with photos of migrants sleeping on a detention center floor to publicize an immigration hearing in Capitol Hill.
Just one problem — the pics were snapped in 2014, during the Obama Administration.
The Dems deleted the two messages, and claimed it was an “error.”
Democrats on the panel sent one of the tweets soon after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Fox News reported, citing a screenshot of the tweet captured by the Trump 2020 campaign.
“Last week, members of our committee visited a detention center at the souther border and discovered grotesque treatment of children,” they wrote in the message. “This week, we are examining the inhumane treatment of ...
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who is running for president in 2020, responded affirmatively on Monday to the anti-Israel group IfNotNow calling on her to pressure “the Israeli government to end occupation,” defined as “stealing Palestinian land.”
Two IfNotNow activists approached Warren, who was campaigning in New Hampshire, with one of them, University of Michigan student Becca Lubow, telling her, “We really love the way you’re fighting corruption. We’d really love it if you also pushed the Israeli government to end occupation.”
“Yes, yes. So I’m there,” responded Warren swiftly, followed by taking a picture with the activists.
“Our members in New Hampshire just asked @ewarren if she woul...

That’s the number of Jews known to currently live in Cairo following the death of the mother of the president of the Jewish community there.
The death of Marcelle Haroun at the age of 93, announced on Saturday, leaves her daughter, Magda, and four granddaughters as the only Jewish residents of the Egyptian capital, reported Watani International.
As of 2017, there are an additional 12 Jews residing in Alexandria, according to AFP.
Haroun was married to anti-Zionist lawyer and politician Shehata Haroun, who was part of Egypt’s Communist Party. He died in 2001 at the age of 82.
Egypt was home to around 100,000 Jews in 1948, when modern-day Israel was established. But an exodus of Jews from Egypt occurred during the Suez Crisis in 1956, leavin...

Attempts to assassinate members of Hamas’ military wing by Israel were thwarted multiple times over recent months, Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported on Wednesday.
The reported attempts came in earnest following a botched operation last November in the Gaza Strip that left one IDF special forces soldier dead, according to Hamas security sources who spoke with the publication.
The Gaza-based security sources also noted that unlike previous attempts to kill senior Hamas militants, Israel employed a “silent method” to take out their targets meant to minimize their footprint on the operations.
One alleged perpetrator is accused of trying to poison at least one senior member of the group’s military wing, adding that if the operation had succeeded, it would have bee...
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Wednesday not to “uproot a single settlement” located in the disputed West Bank under any peace plan with the Palestinians.
While delivering remarks at an event held in the settlement of Revava, Netanyahu promised that his government would not disrupt the lives of Israeli citizens living in the “biblical heartland” of the Shomron in a message to settlers ahead of September’s general election.
“Here’s a commitment, write it down,” he said at the event marking 40 years since the founding of the Samaria Regional Council. “It is impossible to uproot any settlement in the Land of Israel, neither of Jews nor of Arabs, we do not uproot people… we are finished making the same mistakes ...

The 22-year-old was held on suspicion of trespass at around on Wednesday by specialist royal officers, the Metropolitan Police Service said. The intruder was not carrying a weapon and the incident is not being treated as terror-related, the force said.
The man remains in custody at a nearby police station in central London.

The White House is pushing congressional leaders to strike a spending deal and increase the debt limit in the next two or three weeks, jolted by a recent report that found the Treasury Department was running out of cash much faster than previously forecasted.
But the talks have bogged down amid acrimony between Democrats and the White House, and now Washington’s leaders run the risk of a fiscal pileup that could also imperil President Donald Trump’s effort to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.
White House officials have said the debt ceiling must be raised by early September to ensure the government can pay its bills. And spending on many federal programs expires at the end of September, requiring a separate deal to prevent a government shutdown.
A second federal judge has denied the Justice Department’s bid to withdraw its attorneys from the legal battle over adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census, though he signaled Wednesday that he might ultimately allow the move if the new lawyers were prepared to address discrepancies between what the previous team had told the court and the Trump administration’s current posture.
U.S. District Judge George Hazel wrote in a six-page order that he shared the concerns of a federal judge in New York who similarly blocked the Justice Department maneuver this week, but noted that in his district, unlike the other judge’s, attorneys do not have to provide “satisfactory reasons for withdrawal.” He wrote he was concerned “a shift in counsel at this late ...
Los Angeles - A California couple has sued a fertility clinic, claiming their embryo was mistakenly implanted in a New York woman, who gave birth to their son as well as a second boy belonging to another couple.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday by Anni and Ashot Manukyan describes an in vitro fertilization mix-up by CHA Fertility Center in Los Angeles that involves three separate couples.
The birth mother believed she was carrying twins made from her and her husband’s genetic material. She and her husband have also sued.
The Manukyans say they endured a court fight before being granted custody of their son. They are seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
CHA officials did not respond to emails seeking comment.
It’s unclear from the lawsuits what happened to the other son.
Queens, NY - Two adults and a 6-year-old girl were killed and two others were seriously injured in a house fire in New York, authorities said.
The blaze was reported Wednesday afternoon in a two-story home in East Elmhurst in Queens. About 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was declared under control about an hour and a half later, according to the New York Fire Department.
“Unfortunately it’s a sad afternoon here in East Elmhurst,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “It’s quite unusual at that time in the afternoon to have a fire trap five occupants in a private dwelling.”
“The first call we received came from the occupant of the first floor apartment in that home who heard an alarm going off and called 911,” Nigro said.
Five Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboats tried to seize a British oil tanker in the Persian Gulf Wednesday but backed off after a British warship approached, a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News.
The British warship was said to have been less than 5 miles behind the tanker but soon intercepted the Iranian boats and threatened to open fire. A manned U.S. reconnaissance aircraft was above as well, the official said, adding that Iranian forces left without opening fire.
Navy Captain Bill Urban, spokesman for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), said the military was aware of the reported actions. He added, “Threats to international freedom of navigation require an international solution. The world economy depends on th...
A 75-year-old San Diego man who led an eventful life of danger and who some thought may have been D.B. Cooper, the legendary hijacker who pulled off one of the most daring heists in modern history, died Tuesday.
Robert Rackstraw died in his condominium, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. An Army veteran and pilot, Rackstraw was often a target for amateur sleuths who thought he could be the infamous hijacker who in 1971 jumped from a plane over Washington state with $200,000 cash.
Calling himself Dan Cooper and wearing a black tie and suit, the suspect told a flight attendant he had a bomb in a briefcase before giving her a note demanding the money and four parachutes.
Upon landing in Seattle, he traded 36 hostages in exchang...
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-N.Y., wondered if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is purposely assigning her busy work, in an effort to discourage her outward dissent and keep her away from the public eye.
Ocasio-Cortez made the comments during a Tuesday interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour and said she was given strenuous committee assignments and said she often thinks about whether or not doing so was a calculated move by Pelosi.
“I was assigned to two of some of the busiest committees and four subcommittees,” AOC said. “So my hands are full. And sometimes I wonder if they’re trying to keep me busy.”
Ocasio-Cortez also said she doesn't have much of a relationship with Pelosi and claimed the last time they spoke one-o...
