HONG KONG (AP) — Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents, mostly clad in black despite the sweltering weather, jammed the city’s streets Sunday in a vehement show of opposition to proposed legislation that has stoked fears of expanding control from Beijing in this former British colony. The marchers are demanding that Hong Kong’s leader first scrap an extradition bill that would allow some suspects to be sent for trial in mainland China and then resign. The conflict, which slipped into unusually violent clashes with police last week, is one of the toughest tests of the territory’s special status since China took control in a 1997 handover. The demonstrators carried banners demanding that Chief Executive Carrie Lam step down and repeatedly broke into chants. Walki...

President Donald Trump is “all in” for a constitutional amendment banning desecration of the American flag, he said in an early morning tweet Saturday, backing such an effort by two Republican senators. To commemorate Flag Day – which also happens to be Trump’s birthday – Sens. Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota introduced the amendment on Friday. “All in for Senator Steve Daines as he proposes an Amendment for a strong BAN on burning our American Flag. A no brainer!” Trump tweeted. This isn’t a new position for the president, who a few weeks after the 2016 election tweeted: “Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or y...
Iran has multiplied the speed at which it enriches uranium but it is still far from the maximum rate possible under its nuclear deal with major powers, meaning it would be months before production ceilings are hit, diplomats who follow it say. Against a backdrop of rising tensions with the United States, which pulled out of the 2015 deal a year ago and has since imposed ever more punishing economic sanctions against Tehran, Iran has stayed within the deal’s key limits while threatening to discard at least some of them. Since it withdrew from the deal, Washington has reinstated its sanctions against Tehran and added new ones in a bid to isolate the Islamic Republic — an effort Iran calls “economic terrorism.” Iran‘s response has included accelerating uranium...
