Two congressional Republicans on Wednesday slammed Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., and a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, for saying on Tuesday, “If [Israeli] Prime Minister Netanyahu makes good on his threat to annex West Bank settlements, he should know that a President Buttigieg would take steps to ensure that American taxpayers won’t help foot the bill.” “That’s not helpful. We need the Palestinian community united around peace,” South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham told JNS. “If I were him, I would criticize Hamas. Israel is not the problem. Nobody’s talking about annexing anything.” “The last time Israel gave up land for peace, it got rockets,” he continued. “So I hope...

Israeli police are investigating an allegation previously reported by Calcalist, that an Israeli winery scammed US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman out of $730,000. A lawsuit was filed in Tel Aviv district court in December by New York-based wine investment company Karraben Wine against Israeli wine company Montefiore Winery and its owner and CEO Arnon Geva. Friedman owned Karraben Wine prior to his appointment as ambassador but sold it to Texas-registered firm Mar Wine in March 2017 to avoid conflict of interest. According to the lawsuit, Montefiore Winery and Geva had presented Friedman — and later a representative of Mar Wine — with fraudulent documents including financial reports, bank transfers, and correspondence, to persuade them to make an investment. On Tuesday, K...
Amman - Jordan’s King Abdullah reacts angrily to any suggestion that he might accept a U.S. deal to end the Arab-Israeli conflict that would make his country a homeland for Palestinians. Speaking to the armed forces in March, he rejected the idea of Jordan as an alternative state for Palestinians, saying: “Don’t we have a voice in the end?” Already facing economic discontent at home, Abdullah must navigate diplomatic moves by his U.S. allies that are upturning a regional status-quo that has underpinned Jordan’s internal politics and foreign relations for decades. After Israel’s creation in 1948 Jordan absorbed more Palestinians than any other country, with some estimates that they now account for more than half the population. Any changes to the inte...

IDF Major General Yitzhak Brick: 'Every day 1,000 - 2,000 missiles could hit us in the next war - God help us.' Former IDF ombudsman Maj. Gen. (res.) Yitzhak Brick spoke about his meeting with Deputy Chief of Staff Eyal on a military podcast on 103FM on Friday. Zamir was a major general in the IDF during the writing of Brick's ominous report in January 2019 about the IDF's lack of readiness for a major military confrontation. According to Brick, Zamir didn't debate the facts presented in the report. "Zamir said he accepts the fact that we are in serious trouble. He read the report, wrote down my recommendations and began implementing them, as did Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, who understood the problem even when he was deputy chief of sta...
President Trump on Thursday said it’s “too soon” to consider making a deal with Iran amid mounting tensions between the two countries, despite the president’s recent insistence that he’s open to talking with Tehran. Trump tweeted that he was appreciative of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe traveling to Iran to meet with Iranian leaders as a mediator, but that he felt he could not begin to “even think about making a deal.” “They are not ready, and neither are we!” Trump tweeted. The House Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed two former Trump officials who were key witnesses in Robert Mueller’s probe, part of the panel’s ongoing counterintelligence investigation into election interference and the president’s alleged foreign ties. The summons for Trump’s former deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and former national security adviser Michael Flynn require them to furnish documents to the panel by June 26 and appear for testimony on July 10. The panel’s chairman, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Thursday that it was “unacceptable” that neither Gates nor Flynn, both of whom pleaded guilty in Mueller’s probe to lying to the FBI, has appeared before the Intelligence Committee. “The American people, and the Congres...

Avi Gabbay, chairman of Israel’s Labor Party, has announced that he is leaving politics after just two years as the party’s leader, and the scramble has begun to replace him with the party at an all-time low in mandates and morale. Originally led by Israel’s founding father and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion, and known as Mapai (“Worker’s Party of the Land of Israel”), Labor boasts that it founded the State of Israel. But the party, which led the country from 1948 until 1977, and won between 40 and 56 mandates during the nation’s first three decades, has struggled in recent years, dwindling to just six seats in April’s elections. “Israel’s Labor Party is in danger of not even surviving the upcoming elections,” forme...
The U.S. Senate unanimously passed on Thursday a bipartisan resolution, introduced by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.), condemning anti-Semitism. “‘In the United States, Jews have suffered from systematic discrimination in the form of exclusion from home ownership in certain neighborhoods, prohibition from staying in certain hotels, restrictions upon membership in private clubs and other associations, limitations upon admission to certain educational institutions, and other barriers to equal justice under the law,’” said Cruz. “This is a shameful legacy, and it makes it all the more incumbent that we as a Senate, speak in one voice and stand resolved that the United States condemns and commits to combating all forms of anti-Semitism.” Sub...
A tree was planted outside the United Nations headquarters in New York City in honor of Anne Frank on Wednesday, which would have been her 90th birthday had she survived the Holocaust. The sapling, donated to the UN by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, is a descendant of the horse chestnut tree that grew outside the building in Amsterdam where the Frank family hid in the attic from the Nazis from 1942 to 1944, according to a commemorative plaque placed in front of the tree. The plaque also read, “The tree is a living tribute to the legacy of Anne Frank and a reminder to educate against hatred and racism,” and included a quote from Frank: “Nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” The United Nations said on Instagram that the ...

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Imagine going to use your cellphone and nothing happens. The screen goes dark, but it's not your battery that's the problem. Annapolis police said at least two people had their cellphone numbers stolen by scammers. A scammer will steal your information, trick your cellphone company into believing they are you and then get a representative to transfer your number to a new device. Angie Barnett, with the Better Business Bureau, said scammers are stealing your personal information from your cellphone. It's happening across the United States, including Maryland. It's called port-out or porting. A scammer gets your cellphone number, your name and personal information, like your Social Security number. The person then contacts your mobile provider...

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. military on Friday released a video it said shows Iran’s Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the oil tankers targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting the Islamic Republic sought to remove evidence of its involvement from the scene. Iran denies being involved, accusing the U.S. instead of waging an “Iranophobic campaign” against it. The U.S. Navy rushed to assist the stricken vessels in the Gulf of Oman, off the coast of Iran, including one that was set ablaze Thursday by an explosion. The ships’ operators offered no immediate explanation on who or what caused the damage against the Norwegian-owned MT Front Altair and the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous. Each was loaded with pet...
Mistakes happen. Most mistakes, though, don’t cost $25 million. This one (almost) did. A misread of the Smart School Bond Act (SSBA) caused millions of dollars in lost technology equipment to New York yeshiva students. Fortunately, Agudath Israel of America and its partners, in the culmination of nearly four years of advocacy, were able to secure the fair and rightful share of the SSBA for nonpublic school students in New York State. Background It began on November 4, 2014, when New York voters approved the SSBA. The SSBA authorized $2 billion to improve education in NYS public schools. School districts could earmark some of that money for classroom technology. In that case, the districts must loan devices, equal to the proportionate share of the technology items ordered, to nonpu...
