WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has asserted executive privilege over documents that were subpoenaed by Congress related to the Trump administration’s decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
The claim comes as the House Oversight Committee considers whether to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt for failing to turn over the subpoenaed documents.
In a letter to the committee’s chairman, Rep. Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the Justice Department asserted that the Trump administration has “engaged in good-faith efforts” to satisfy the committee’s oversight needs and said the planned contempt vote was premature.

Washington - Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Wednesday that if she wins the White House, her Justice Department “would have no choice” but to pursue an obstruction of justice case against President Donald Trump after he leaves office.
The California senator and some other Democrats in the 2020 race are pushing their party to initiate the impeachment process in the wake of special counsel Robert Mueller ‘s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Mueller has said he was unable to exonerate Trump of obstruction but couldn’t pursue potential charges because of a Justice Department policy that bars the indictment of a sitting president — a policy Harris has said she would ask her Justice Department to re-examine.

Jerusalem - Israel is rolling out the red carpet for New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who arrives next week to collect the Genesis Prize, a prestigious award dubbed by its sponsors as the “Jewish Nobel Prize.”
Kraft, a longtime supporter of Jewish and Israeli causes, can expect a warm welcome during a nearly weeklong visit.

Ramallah - Palestinians urged Egypt and Jordan on Wednesday to reconsider their attendance at a U.S.-led conference on June 25-26 in Bahrain, voicing concern it would weaken any Arab opposition to Washington’s coming peace plan.
The United States has billed the gathering as a workshop to boost the Palestinian economy as part of a broader diplomatic effort widely referred to as President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century” to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Palestinian leaders, who are boycotting the meeting, say the still unpublished plan falls short of their goal of statehood. They primarily blame a halt in U.S. aid and Israeli restrictions for an economic crisis in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

French police have quashed a cell of neo-Nazis who were allegedly plotting attacks on Jewish shuls and Muslim mosques, judicial sources said on Tuesday.
“The investigation suggested they were developing an ill-defined plot to carry out an attack, likely to target a place of worship,” according to the judicial source.
Five members of an alleged neo-Nazi group were charged between September and May over a plot, but no specific targets or motives were given by the source.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that an unmanned aircraft from Lebanon briefly infiltrated Israeli airspace on Wednesday before returning to Lebanese territory.
The drone incident comes less than 24-hours after the head of the IDF’s Northern Command warned that Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group was building up a “terrorist infrastructure” along the border with Israel and vowed not to allow the group to realize its “destructive ambitions.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Trump by 13 points nationally, according to the latest Quinnipiac University survey.
In a national head-to-head matchup, the poll found Biden taking 53 percent against 40 percent for Trump, with the poll’s assistant director describing it as a “landslide” margin.
Five other Democratic contenders also lead the president: Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) hold healthy leads over Trump, with Sanders up by 9 points, Harris ahead by 8 and Warren leading by 7. South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) lead Trump by 5 points, with each posting a 47 to 42 split.

The military announced on Wednesday that it was upgrading its incoming rocket siren system throughout the country, making the alerts more precise and easier to understand.
Under the old method, the country was broken down into approximately 255 regions. If the military detected an incoming projectile heading toward anywhere within a region, sirens would be triggered throughout the entire area.
The new system, which will officially be rolled out at 5 p.m. Wednesday, operates based on approximately 1,700 regions, or “polygons,” as the army calls them.
This is meant to ensure that sirens are activated only in areas where there is an actual threat, ensuring both that unaffected Israelis can continue going about their daily routines and that trust in the alert system remains high...

Gavriel Lavi, one of two Israelis wounded in a stabbing attack in the Old City of Jerusalem last month, was discharged from Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem Wednesday.
Lavi was critically wounded in the May 31st terror attack in the Old City, during which a 19-year-old Palestinian Arab terrorist stabbed and wounded two Israelis before being shot and killed by Israeli security personnel.
Forty-seven-year-old Lavi was initially listed in critical condition, but was later downgraded to serious but stable condition.

New York - The pilot killed when his helicopter hit the roof of a New York City skyscraper in rain and fog radioed that he was lost and trying to get back to the heliport but couldn’t find it, an official briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The radio calls are the clearest evidence yet that foul weather might have played a role in Monday’s crash.
The person wasn’t authorized to discuss the radio calls publicly because of the ongoing federal safety investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signed a plea bargain Wednesday to pay NIS 55,000 ($15,215) for allegedly exploiting state resources for private catering services at the Prime Minister’s Residence.
According to the deal, which will be presented Wednesday at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, Mrs. Netanyahu will be charged with a criminal offense for receiving a gift by purposefully exploiting other people’s mistakes but not by fraudulent means. The fine will be transferred to the state.
Mrs. Netanyahu will not have to plead guilty to defrauding the state, as she was accused of doing when an indictment was first filed against her in June 2018. She will not stand trial after the case went through a six-month long arbitration process.

The Board of Education of Baltimore County has voted and passed an updated calendar for the 2019-20 school year.
According to officials, the first day of that school calendar will have the students start on Tuesday, September 3, the day after Labor Day.
WBAL-TV 11 reports that the vote on the calendar was unanimous.
The calendar also includes a 10-day spring break and five emergency closure days.

Lutherbille-Timonium, MD — York Road in Timonium is closed in both directions just south of Padonia Road for a collapsed roadway.
Ongoing work to a watermain stopped after the line broke and the road collapsed. The collapse then caused bowing on a gasline.
The concern now is for the gas line and how to proceed. Fire officials say repairing that will take at least four hours.
Drivers can avoid the inevitable delays by taking Deereco and Greenspring roads or I-83.
Baltimore Gas and Electric and Department of Public Works contractors are working to remove the debris from the line and Baltimore County Fire officials are on scene monitoring.

Former Vice President Joe Biden made a bold promise on Tuesday to “cure cancer” if he is elected president in 2020.
At a campaign event in Ottumwa, Iowa, Biden expressed the difficulty one faces with a “loss” of a family member and others attempt to comfort them saying, “‘I know how you feel'” when in reality they have “no idea how I feel,” which is likely in reference to the loss of his son Beau Biden, who died in 2015 from brain cancer.
“That’s why I’ve worked so hard in my career to make sure that… I promise you if I’m elected president, you’re going to see the single most important thing that changes America, we’re gonna cure cancer,” Biden declared.

Syria’s missile defense system intercepted a number of missiles fired by Israel at it’s southern border, Syrian state news agency SANA reported overnight Tuesday.
The attack was launched in the early hours of the morning against the Tall al-Hara sector near the Golan Heights, SANA reported, adding that there had been no casualties.
The report did not specify the target of the raid. Britain-based war monitor The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the strikes had targeted positions of the Hezbollah Shiite movement in two locations.
“All the positions hit had the Lebanese Hezbollah there,” the Observatory said.
