Witnesses on the ground near where a helicopter crashed into a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday, killing one, said the immediate aftermath was eerily reminiscent of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Daily Beast reports. While there is no indication of terrorism in the crash, which resulted in the pilot’s death, Gov. Andrew Cuomo remarked that “If you’re a New Yorker you have a level of PTSD from 9/11.” Witnesses on the ground echoed that sentiment. Rafael Arias, an employee at the Pret-a-Manger on the bottom floor of the AXA Equitable Center, told The Daily Beast that he felt the building “sway” during the crash, which killed the pilot. “I thought maybe it was a mini-earthquake but then again we’re in New York and I was like, shit, maybe 9/11 ag...
A woman made an unfounded bomb threat Monday morning outside a Motor Vehicle Administration office in Bel Air, Maryland State Police said. The threat was reported just after 9:20 outside the office at 501 West MacPhail Road. The woman claimed a bomb was in her vehicle. The MVA requested the entrance to their Bel Air office be closed, and told everyone in the building to shelter in place as a state police K9 unit responded, police said. After the location was deemed safe, the MVA location and nearby roads were reopened at around 10:30 a.m. The woman never made it inside the building, since she was stopped by a state trooper at the door. She was taken to an area hospital for an emergency evaluation. No injuries were reported.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s half-brother Kim Jong Nam, who was killed in a Malaysian airport in 2017, was a CIA informant who met with agency personnel on several occasions before his death, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing a person knowledgeable about the matter. At the time of his death, Kim had not lived in North Korea for several years, and he was likely in contact with the intelligence services of other countries as well, including China, the Journal reported Monday. Kim Jong Nam was killed in Kuala Lumpur when two women smeared the nerve agent VX on his face. U.S. and South Korean officials believe Pyongyang is responsible. Read more at The Hill.
The State Prosecutor’s Office agreed Monday to a one-day postponement of a plea bargain that would see Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, pay a fine and avoid jail time in the so-called catering case. Although a deal had been reached, Sara Netanyahu’s attorney, Yossi Cohen, was granted an extra 24-hours to propose last-minute amendments. Cohen had petitioned the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court in Jerusalem, saying Netanyahu’s legal team “needs a brief extension of one day to clarify and sharpen her positions regarding the emerging plea bargain.” Read more at Times of Israel.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Three days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal with Mexico to stem the flow of migrants at the southern border, the two countries appear unable to agree on exactly what's in it. Stung by criticism that the agreement mostly ramps up border protection efforts already underway, Trump on Monday hinted at other, secret agreements he says will soon be revealed. "We have fully signed and documented another very important part of the Immigration and Security deal with Mexico, one that the U.S. has been asking about getting for many years," Trump wrote Monday, saying it would "be revealed in the not too distant future." Not so, said Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, holding up a paper and pointing to the previously announced details. He told re...
JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says naval forces boarded a cargo ship off the coast that had been set on fire. The military says it was alerted early Sunday to an anchored ship off northern Israel whose hull was ablaze. At the request of the ship’s captain, Israeli forces boarded and searched the ship. Hours later, the military said it apprehended a hidden passenger and transferred him to police for questioning. Local media say the ship was making its way from Turkey to an Israeli port and that a stowaway tried to set the vessel ablaze, causing damage. The ship was said to have sailed under a Panamanian flag. The military says the incident is over and would provide no further details.

Rabbi Shlomo Tawil, co-director of the local Chabad-Lubavitch organization, was attacked Sunday night by three men in Rosario, Argentina. The men shouted anti-Semitic epithets before removing the rabbi’s hat and trampling it on the ground, then beating the rabbi, who was walking alone. The attack was stopped when passersby intervened. It has been characterized as anti-Semitic, since the attackers appeared to have started up with the rabbi to hurt him, and did not steal anything. The local representative of the DAIA Jewish political umbrella in Argentina, Gabriel Dobkin, called the attack on the rabbi “a fierce, cowardly, anti-Semitic attack.” Read more at Times of Israel.
The East Clinton Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook that McCormack’s “technical knowledge and ability to command an emergency were exceptional.” The 19-year-old helicopter was linked to a real estate company founded by Italian-born investor Daniele Bodini, according to FAA records. The helicopter went down about 11 minutes after taking off from a heliport along the East River, a little more than a mile (1.6 km) away. Police Commissioner James O’Neill said it may have been returning to its home airport in Linden, New Jersey. The director at Linden Municipal Airport, Paul Dudley, described McCormack as “a highly seasoned” and “very well regarded” pilot who was a regular at the airfield. He suspects that a mechanical problem or the...
New York - NASA announced Friday that it will open the International Space Station to private astronauts, with the first visit as early as next year. The round-trip ticket will cost an estimated $58 million. And accommodations aboard the orbiting outpost will run about $35,000 per night, for trips of up to 30 days long. The space agency says only two visitors per year will be allowed, for now. Private astronauts will have to meet the same medical standards and training and certification procedures as regular crew members.
Although I am only covering Shavous in the shtikle, please explore the many intriguing blog posts on Bemidbar below: The holiday of Shavuos has a unique name. All of the other holidays that adorn our calendar are aptly named for something to do with the chag itself. We sit in sukkos on Sukkos, for example. Rosh HaShanah is the beginning of the year. Our upcoming chag, however, is not called Chag HaTorah, not even Chag HaCheesecake. Rather, it is called Shavuos, referring to the weeks that proceed it. Why is this chag so differently named. It would seem that the naming of Shavuos is meant to send us a message. We are not meant to view the time between Pesach and Shavuos as a mere lead-up to Shavuos. Rather, these days are an integral part of the cha...
Parshas Bamidbar commences with the tziva from Hashem to once again take a census of Bnei Yisroel.  (Bamidbar 1:2) Hashem is very explicit that the census is to be taken “according to their families and according to their father’s household”. (1:2) The Torah then recites the tally for each family (except Shevet Levi, who was excluded from the count) (1:48) reaching a total of 603,550 (1:46).  This stands in stark contrast to the census taken in Parshas P’kudei where the tally was taken of the entire B’nei Yisroel, without any regard to the amount in each particular Shevet.  (Pikudei, 38:26)  This raises two significant questions.  First, why are we doing another census so close to when the last one was done?  Second, why in the 2...
Ever find yourself in a long “10 items or less” supermarket line waiting for the cashier to check the price of kumquats for the lady who apparently considers all her fruits and vegetables to count as a single item? Well, even if you have, you might compare your experience with the recent one of the hundreds of people bundled up in minus-20-degree weather waiting patiently in line on a narrow path more than 26,000 feet above sea level to reach the summit of Nepal’s Mount Everest. And, in the supermarket, you weren’t likely laden with an oxygen tank – a necessity at that altitude – whose contents were steadily diminishing. What’s more, you probably didn’t have to navigate past the body of someone who died while waiting on line before you. Wh...

The Kremlin said Friday that Russian President Vladmir Putin may meet US President Donald Trump at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan at the end of this month, according to the Interfax news agency. Last year, G20 leaders held their annual talks in Bueno Aires just days after the Russian seizure of three Ukrainian navy vessels off the coast of Crimea. The incident prompted Trump to cancel a previously scheduled meeting with Putin. Trump and Putin have only spoken in a few phone conversations in recent months after the US officially withdrew from the landmark Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) missile treaty over Moscow’s violation of the agreement. Until further notice, do not use the other oven on Yom Tov or Shabbos.  The manufacturer is working on a fix.  If you own any of these models, please email your model number, serial number and contact information to appliances@star-k.org so they can notify you when the fix is available.
