NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The search is on for four men wanted for harassing two Hasidic teenagers in Brooklyn on Saturday. Former assemblyman Dov Hikind and the victims reported the incident at the 66th precinct. “The mother of the 16-year-old said to me just before, ‘I’m not letting my kid walk the streets,’” said Hikind. According to their report to police, the 16-year-old boys were walking home from a sabbath gathering around 1:00 a.m. near 12th Avenue and 51st Street in Borough Park. The boys said that’s when four men in a car with TLC license plates yelled “Allah Akbar,” and “Do you know Hitler? Whole Foods is preparing to stop offering plastic straws at any of its 500 stores.  The company, which is owned by Amazon, announced on Monday that by July it would no longer sell plastic straws in its stores in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom, according to CNN.  The move marks the first time a national grocery chain has taken the step to ditch plastic straws. It also comes more than 10 years after the company stopped offering disposable plastic bags for customers.  Whole Foods will start offering paper straws at its juice and coffee bars starting in July, though CNN noted that plastic straws will still be available upon request for customers with disabilities.  In addition, Whole Foods will start selling smaller plastic bags in its produce department....
Gedolim wished European Agudah leader Reb Aharon Aronson of Amsterdam a long life with the celebration of his 100th birthday. Rav Chaim Kanievsky, 89, quipped that Rav Aronson looked younger than he does, and said that the Steipler once said that he envied Aronson’s Gan Eden, due to persecution he suffered after refusing to submit information about a Jew to the authorities after WWII. Aronson helped restore the chareidi world in Europe after the Holocaust. He led Agudas Yisroel in Amsterdam, served as secretary of Holland’s Agudah for over 40 years, and represented Europe in the organization’s international affairs. He is still a beloved chazzan at weddings and other occasions.
Jerusalem - Israeli politicians responded with anger to statements by Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki that returning Jewish property in Poland stolen during the Holocaust would be a “victory for Hitler.” Morawiecki told a rally in Lodz on Saturday that Poland would never agree to the restitution of stolen Jewish property. He claimed that the request for restitution violates international law and would also be “a posthumous victory for Hitler, which is why we will never allow it.” In response, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein charged that the “Polish leadership is again trying to distort history, and is now trying to thwart the justice it would do in returning the property of Holocaust survivors.” “Instead of solving the fundament...

Tehran - Iran has quadrupled its production of low-enriched uranium amid tensions with the U.S. over Tehran’s unraveling nuclear accord, two semi-official news agencies reported Monday, an announcement just after President Donald Trump warned Iran it would face its “official end” if it threatened America again. While the reports said the production is of uranium enriched only to the 3.67% limit set by the 2015 nuclear deal that Tehran reached with world powers, it means that Iran soon will go beyond the stockpile limitations established by the accord. This follows days of heightened tensions sparked by the Trump administration’s deployment of bombers and an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf over still-unspecified threats from Iran. While Trump’s dueling a...

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 4.9% increase in the number of measles cases from May 10 to May 17 in an outbreak that has now reached 24 states. The agency has been providing weekly updates every Monday. The CDC said there had been one confirmed case in Oklahoma. Health experts say the virus has spread among school-age children whose parents declined to give them the vaccine, which...
Beijing - The number of foreign companies that feel compelled to hand over technology in exchange for Chinese market access — an issue that sparked President Donald Trump’s tariff fight with Beijing — has doubled since two years ago despite official promises to end such pressure, a business group reported Monday. The European Chamber of Commerce in China’s report highlighted enduring complaints about “forced technology transfer” that China’s trading partners say violate its market-opening commitments despite denials and promises of change. European leaders have criticized Trump’s tactics in confronting Beijing over its technology ambitions but echo U.S. criticisms. One in five companies that responded to a survey in January, before the lat...
Washington - Accounts tagged ‘hatetrump’ and ‘ihatetrump’ are part of a coordinated campaign to undermine U.S. President Donald Trump that has emerged on social media site Instagram, an independent study has revealed. The photo-sharing app Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, said it was investigating the report and had already removed some of the profiles it highlighted. Malign online attacks against Trump’s opponents have been well documented, most notably in the 2016 presidential election campaign, when Russian trolls allegedly flooded social media sites to undermine the Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced legislation Monday to raise the tobacco purchasing age from 18 to 21.  McConnell, who hails from one of the biggest tobacco producing states, said he's proud of Kentucky's history but the purchasing age must be increased amid record high youth vaping rates.  "We're proud of our past, and we're proud of who we are, but Kentucky farmers don't want their children to get hooked on tobacco products while they're in middle or high school anymore than any parents anywhere want that to happen," McConnell said on the Senate floor Monday.  "This is not a zero sum choice between farmers and public health. We can support both, we need to support both,...
The Prime Minister of Poland has declared that paying compensation for Jewish property stolen during the Holocaust would be a “victory for Hitler” and he will never allow it to happen. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made the comments on Friday at a campaign rally in the city of Lodz, which was home to the second-largest Jewish ghetto under Nazi rule. Calling on Poland to pay compensation for World War II “violates international law and would also be a posthumous victory for Hitler,” he said. Under his ruling Law and Justice party, he added, “something like this will never happen.” Relations between Poland and Israel have been strained over the past year as the debate over reparations and Polish guilt regarding the Holocaust has heated up. Last we...
President Trump has instructed former White House counsel Don McGahn to evade a subpoena to testify before Congress on Tuesday. "This action has been taken in order to ensure that future Presidents can effectively execute the responsibilities of the Office of the Presidency."
Baltimore, MD, May 20, 2019 — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), representing over 1000 traditional rabbis in matters of public policy, today condemned the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) for inviting the Rev. Al Sharpton to address its Washington, DC conference earlier in the day. Rev. Sharpton was touted on the agenda of the RAC program, entitled "Consultation on Conscience," as "one of the nation’s most renowned civil rights leaders." "That is a shameful way to describe a man known for Antisemitic statements and incitement to violence," said Rabbi Pesach Lerner, President of the CJV. "Al Sharpton set race relations back years, and helped ignite a hostility towards Jews in the black community that persists to this day. For a Jewish organization ...

Baltimore, MD - May 18, 2019 - The Baltimore Jewish community wishes to thank County Councilman Izzy Patoka for his critical assistance ensuring that necessary modifications to the Baltimore Eruv could be implemented. Izzy posted the following on his Facebook page: On Wednesday, our office was alerted that modifications to the fence at Druid Ridge Cemetery distributed the eruv line in a way that caused significant and urgent issues as it relates to Shabbos. An eruv line allows members of the Jewish faith to carry babies with them, strollers and other items within its borders on Shabbos. The line forms a nearly invisible enclosure and can be comprised of a series of pre-existing structures (walls, fences, electrical poles and wires) and/or structures created expressly for th...
Jerusalem - The Palestinian prime minister said Monday that any American peace plan that ignores the Palestinian people’s political aspirations for an independent state is doomed to fail. Mohammad Shtayyeh’s comments immediately cast a cloud over the American-led Mideast peace conference expected to take place in late June in the tiny Gulf Arab state of Bahrain. The White House announced Sunday it will unveil the first phase of its long-awaited Mideast peace plan at the conference, saying it will focus on economic benefits that could be reaped if the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved. The plan envisions large-scale investment and infrastructure work, much of it funded by wealthy Arab countries, in the Palestinian territories. But officials say the June 25-26 conferen...
Washington - The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission says he plans to recommend the agency approve the $26.5 billion merger of wireless carriers T-Mobile and Sprint, saying it’ll speed up 5G deployment in the U.S. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai also said Monday that the combination will help bring faster mobile broadband to rural Americans. “Two of the FCC’s top priorities are closing the digital divide in rural America and advancing United States leadership in 5G, the next generation of wireless connectivity. The commitments made today by T-Mobile and Sprint would substantially advance each of these critical objectives,” he said in a statement. Pai said the companies have committed to deploying a 5G network that would cover 97% of the U.S. population within...

Billionaire tech investor Robert F. Smith stunned college graduates on Sunday as he gave their commencement speech — offering to pay their student debts despite it costing an estimated $40 million. “On behalf of the eight generations of my family that have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus,” Smith told the 400 graduating seniors at the all-male Morehouse College in Atlanta. “This is my class, 2019. And my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.” The announcement was initially met with stunned looks — before the graduates broke into cheers and tears at the largest gift ever given to the historically black college.
