Washington - The federal appeals court has ruled the Trump administration acted in an “arbitrary and capricious” manner when it sought to end an Obama-era program that shields young immigrants from deportation.
A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2 to 1 Friday that the Trump administration violated federal statue when it tried to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program without adequately explaining why.
The Supreme Court is weighing the Trump administration’s appeals of other lower court rulings that also ordered that DACA be kept in place. The justices have set no date to take action.
If the high court decides it wants to hear the appeals, a decision isn’t expected until 2020.

NEW YORK (AP) — Herman Wouk, the versatile, Pulitzer Prize winning author of such million-selling novels as “The Caine Mutiny” and “The Winds of War” whose steady Jewish faith inspired his stories of religious values and secular success, died on Friday at 103.
Wouk was just 10 days shy of his 104th birthday and was working on a book until the end, said his literary agent Amy Rennert.
Rennert said Wouk died in his sleep at his home in Palm Springs, California, where he settled after spending many years in Washington, D.C.

Baltimore, MD – May 17, 2019 - Last night our dynamic City Councilman, Yitzy Schleifer brought the CEO of the Maryland Food Bank, Carmen Del Guercio, and another senior administrative official, Nancy Smith, of Government Relations to visit Ahavas Yisrael operations and warehouse.
They were very impressed, and it was a true kiddush Hashem! The warehouse and operations and all the volunteers made an incredible impression on our 3 special visitors.
With over 25 volunteers every Thursday night this program is very well managed and does incredible chesed. One active volunteer is Cliff Anderson a banker at Bank of America and Merrill Lynch who volunteers each week together with over 25 weekly volunteers.

Fires were set outside two Chabad centers in Massachusetts on Thursday night causing damage to shingles and siding at both. A small fire had been set outside one of the centers only five days before.
One fire was set at the Chabad Jewish Center in Needham, Mass., which also serves as the residence for the rabbi and his family, in what appears to be an intentional blaze.

Paris - The French leader of the 2014 attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels has been transferred to France in relation to the hostage taking of French journalists in Syria.
A French judicial official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak publicly on the investigation, said Friday that Mehdi Nemmouche has been transferred to a French prison to face charges of “abduction and illegal sequestration with links to a terrorist enterprise.”
The charges relate to allegations that he was involved in the kidnapping of four French journalists held in Syria between June 2013 and May 2014.
Nemmouche was sentenced last December to life in prison in Belgium on terror charges for shooting dead an Israeli couple and two people working at the museum.

Berlin - German lawmakers on Friday approved a resolution denouncing the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement against Israel, describing its methods as anti-Semitic and reminiscent of Nazi-era calls to boycott Jews.
The motion called on the German government not to support events organized by BDS or other groups that actively pursue its aims, and vowed that parliament wouldn’t finance any projects that call for a boycott of Israel or actively support the movement. It was filed by the country’s three governing parties, along with two mainstream opposition parties, and passed by a large majority.

Iran’s top general Qassem Soleimani has reportedly met with Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and told them to “prepare for a proxy war”, as tensions continue to soar between Tehran and Washington.
According to the report, the Baghdad meeting was a key factor in the US decision to recall all non-essential government staff from Iraq over an “imminent” threat from Iranian-linked militias.
Tensions between the US and Iran have boiled over recent weeks, with Washington accusing Tehran of preparing attacks against American interests in the region — reportedly based in part on Israeli intelligence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn told the special counsel’s office that people connected to the Trump administration and Congress sought to influence his cooperation with the Russia investigation, and he provided a voicemail recording of one such communication, prosecutors said in a court filing made public Thursday.
Meanwhile, the judge in the case ordered that portions of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report that relate to Flynn be unredacted and made public by the end of the month.

Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau on Thursday called for Shabbos to be extended by 10 minutes in response to the expected chillul Shabbos caused by the Eurovision song contest.
“Due to the great desecration that will take place on the upcoming Shabbos because of the Eurovision song contest, I ask each and every person to refrain from doing work 10 minutes before lighting candles [to mark the start of the Sabbath] and ten minutes after the end of the Shabbos,” Lau said in a lecture in the central city of Modiin.
“We will extend the kedusha of Shabbos and add from the regular to the holy,” he said. “This desecration is taking place before the eyes of the world.”

An Asbury Park man has been charged with passing counterfeit money at the Gourmet Glatt kosher supermarket in Lakewood, police said Thursday.
Police were called Wednesday after a cashier at the store realized a man was attempting to pay for his items with what was believed to be a counterfeit U.S. $100 bill, the police department said. The cashier told the responding officer that the suspect tried to assault him before running away.
Upon looking at security footage, the police were able to apprehend Irwin Greene, 48, a man with several outstanding warrants who is now facing multiple charges in connection with the counterfeit bills. Greene is being held in the Ocean County Jail pending additional charges.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David M. Friedman fired back at The New York Times on Wednesday over an article castigating him for claiming that Israel was “on the side of God” while speaking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the upcoming U.S. peace proposal.
Speaking to a group of evangelical faith leaders at the Aish Hatorah World Center, overlooking the Western Wall plaza and the Temple Mount, Friedman said that, “apparently, there was nothing more offensive I could have said to The New York Times.”

A bochur driving on the Garden State yesterday had a real scare yesterday when his van suddenly went up in flames!
The young man was able to exit his vehicle and watch as it went up in flames. Firefighters were called to the scene to put out the fire but the car was destroyed.

An atzeres tefilla took place in Eretz Yisroel yesterday at the behest of Rav Chaim Kanievsky, who called for a strengthening of tefillos and shmiras Shabbos to protest the international Eurovison contest taking place in Tel Aviv this weekend.
Eurovision organizers were set “to be mechallel Shabbos kodesh b’rabim b’farhesia, Rachman litzlan,” Rav Chaim wrote in a letter that was endorsed by Rav Gershon Edelstein as well.
Rav Chaim called on the tzibbur to gather in shuls on Thursday night at chatzos to be mispallel that the chillul Shabbos should not continue. Rav Chaim also called for a chizuk in shmiras Shabbos to be a kapara.

The committee in charge of the “Great March of Return” demonstrations in the Gaza Strip cancelled weekly protests set to be held Friday in light of hot temperatures outside and “to provide a break to citizens, who held a large protest two days ago.”
The cancellation of the Gaza protests come on the second Friday of Ramadan, during which time Muslims fast and abstain from drinking water during daylight hours.
It is only the second time that the weekly demonstrations, held with the backing of Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas, have been cancelled since they began in March 2018.

The man suspected of stabbing a Jewish woman in Sweden did not commit a hate crime, targeting her randomly amid a psychiatric crisis, his mother said.
The 29-year-old man, who has an extensive criminal record for assault, was released from 12 days at a psychiatric institution one day prior to the attack Tuesday in Helingborg, in which he delivered near-fatal blows to an older Jewish woman from the local community.
“This does not have anything to do with religion,” the suspect’s mother told Expressen. Though neither she, her son nor the victim have been named, initial reports indicated that the attacker was Muslim.
A local Muslim umbrella group condemned the condemned and called for a show of solidarity with the Jewish community of Sweden.
