Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his re-election and stressed the need to work toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Merkel’s office said stressed in a phone conversation Monday the continued relevance of a two-state solution, which she said should be the goal of international efforts. Merkel also expressed her willingness to work closely and trustingly with the incoming Israeli government. During the final stretch of his election campaign, Netanyahu pledged for the first time to annex parts of the occupied West Bank in a desperate bid to rally his right-wing base. Netanyahu has reneged on election eve promises before, but should he follow through on this one, it would mark a dramati...

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski said he is proposing the first income tax increase in more than 25 years. BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski focused on schools, public safety and health in his FY 2020 budget proposal on Monday, April 15. Declaring Baltimore County "at a crossroads" with a budget deficit and many needs to be addressed to maintain quality of life, he proposed an income tax increase, from 2.83 to 3.2 percent. "For a resident earning $50,000 per year, this amounts to about $15 more per month," Olszewski said. "The last time the income tax was raised was in 1992. The cold war had just ended, Bill Clinton was elected president, a gallon of gas cost just over $1, and our county's education budget was about $356 mi...
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said she has received an increase in death threats since President Trump shared an edited video on Twitter that featured images of the 9/11 terrorist attack with Omar’s comments spliced in between. Omar put out a statement Sunday night detailing the blowback she has faced since Trump posted the video. “Since the President’s tweet Friday evening, I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life — many directly referencing or replying to the President’s video,” Omar wrote in a statement. “Violent rhetoric and all forms of hate speech have no place in our society, much less from our country’s Commander in Chief,” Omar added. “We are all Americans. This is endangering lives. It has to stop.&rdqu...
Education Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday evening, together with representatives of the New Right party, reviewed the raw materials of the committees which count the double envelopes containing the votes of the soldiers. A review of the materials found that no invalid ballots were found, with the exception of one ballot that had been disqualified according to the law. The Election Committee approved the New Right’s request to conduct a recount of votes in 300 ballot boxes which were used for special votes – the double-enveloped ballots cast by Israeli citizens unable to vote at the ballot nearest to their home. Despite polls showing the New Right entering the Knesset with five to six seats, the party narrowly missed the electoral threshold in the initial vote count. Read...
President Donald Trump’s proposal for a “Deal of the Century” to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict promises practical improvements in the lives of Palestinian Arabs but is likely to stop short of ensuring a separate, fully sovereign Palestinian state, people familiar with the main elements of the effort told The Washington Post on Sunday. The plan is likely to focus heavily on Israeli security concerns, according to The Washington Post. Trump has told friends he wants to upend traditional assumptions about how to resolve the conflict, but unlike in his unorthodox personal diplomacy with North Korea, Trump has largely outsourced the Middle East peace effort to his son-in-law. Arab officials familiar with Kushner’s sales pitches said he has offered no specifics but ...
Research shows immune system could be left in a temporary state of amnesia The number of new U.S. measles cases continued to accelerate last week as health authorities race to curb the outbreaks and scientists who study the virus say measles may be more harmful than once believed. There have been 555 cases of measles in 20 states across the U.S. this year as of April 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday, 90 more than were reported the previous week. The increase in cases means 2019 could soon become the worst for measles in the U.S. since the disease was officially eliminated—meaning that it stopped circulating continuously—in 2000. In 2014, the worst year since elimination, 667 cases were repor...
Baltimore, MD - Apr. 15, 2019: I love this community. I have known for a long time that Baltimore is special. The achdus, the tolerance of yiddin who come from different backgrounds or make different choices, the incredible avoidance of loshon hora have all impressed me ever since I moved here 14 years ago. But what I did not realize was how much deep and profound kindness, true love for fellow yiddin is found within our community. In large part I suppose this is because my family did not need to rely on the kindnesses of others – so while we knew Bikur Cholim and Chai Lifeline (among others) and good people existed, we did not really understand how these institutions and individuals can make all the difference for someone who needs help, who may be in a dark place and in need of ...

New York - Yemeni-Americans are criticizing the New York Post over its front page last week that featured a photograph of the burning World Trade Center and a quote from Democratic Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar that some say was dismissive of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. On Sunday, The New York Times reports the Yemeni American Merchant Association announced a formal boycott of the tabloid after Yemini bodega owners in New York had earlier agreed stop selling the newspaper. Last week’s front page featured a quote that came from a recent speech the Minnesota Democrat gave to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, in which she described the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center as “some people did something.” “We support free speech, but we will not accep...

Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday urged Boeing Co to fix and “rebrand” its troubled 737 MAX jetliner following two fatal crashes even as U.S. regulators continued to work with the planemaker and airlines regarding the now-grounded aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration has been meeting with representatives from American Airlines Group Inc, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines Co over the next steps after more than 300 Boeing 737 MAXs were grounded worldwide. FAA officials have also convened a joint review with aviation regulators from other countries, while federal prosecutors, the U.S. Department of Transportation inspector general’s office and a blue-ribbon panel are reviewing the plane’s certification. Jerusalem - Rumors swirled Sunday night that the remains of legendary Israeli spy Eli Cohen were on their way to Israel from Syria with a Russian delegation just weeks after an IDF soldier missing for close to four decades was brought back for burial. Israeli cabinet ministers have refused to comment on the rumors which were first published by Channel 12 News Sunday night which were also questioned by other news channels as there were no official Syrian opposition reports rather only flimsy social media accounts. Cohen, an Egyptian-born Jew, was a legendary undercover Israeli agent for the Mossad intelligence agency in Syria under the alias Kamal Amin Ta’abet, providing Israel with considerable details on Syrian political and military matters. He was able to build close ties with ...

Rep. Ilhan Omar continues to be an embarrassment and a disgrace for me and other American Muslims with her outrageous, ignorant, anti-Semitic and now anti-American comments. And while Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, holds herself out as a proud Muslim, she repeatedly projects a distorted and patently Islamist interpretation of Islam – a religion that in reality stands for the values of justice, peace and ethical conduct. Sadly, Omar gives millions of Americans a false impression of what Islam is and what we Muslims believe and stand for. While she denounces prejudice against Muslims, her aberrant views on Islam fuel prejudice against me and my coreligionists by distorting who we are while defaming and dishonoring the great monotheism of Islam. PELOSI MOVES TO ENSURE ILH...
BALTIMORE, MD — A tornado watch is in effect for 13 Maryland counties, plus the city of Baltimore, until early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. At 6:05 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service issued the tornado watch, which runs until 3 a.m. on April 15. Two rounds of showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected Sunday night into Monday that could generate damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado. Heavy rain in thunderstorms may lead to isolated instances of flooding, the weather service says. "I am asking all Marylanders to pay close attention to the updated weather forecasts for this evening and overnight," said Gov. Larry Hogan Monday evening. "The National Weather Service is predicting severe storms, high wind gusts, and the potential for isol...
