Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski said he is proposing the first income tax increase in more than 25 years.
BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski focused on schools, public safety and health in his FY 2020 budget proposal on Monday, April 15.
Declaring Baltimore County "at a crossroads" with a budget deficit and many needs to be addressed to maintain quality of life, he proposed an income tax increase, from 2.83 to 3.2 percent.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said she has received an increase in death threats since President Trump shared an edited video on Twitter that featured images of the 9/11 terrorist attack with Omar’s comments spliced in between.
Omar put out a statement Sunday night detailing the blowback she has faced since Trump posted the video.
“Since the President’s tweet Friday evening, I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life — many directly referencing or replying to the President’s video,” Omar wrote in a statement.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday evening, together with representatives of the New Right party, reviewed the raw materials of the committees which count the double envelopes containing the votes of the soldiers.
A review of the materials found that no invalid ballots were found, with the exception of one ballot that had been disqualified according to the law.
The Election Committee approved the New Right’s request to conduct a recount of votes in 300 ballot boxes which were used for special votes – the double-enveloped ballots cast by Israeli citizens unable to vote at the ballot nearest to their home.
Despite polls showing the New Right entering the Knesset with five to six seats, the party narrowly missed the electoral threshold in the initial vote count.

The number of new U.S. measles cases continued to accelerate last week as health authorities race to curb the outbreaks and scientists who study the virus say measles may be more harmful than once believed.
There have been 555 cases of measles in 20 states across the U.S. this year as of April 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday, 90 more than were reported the previous week.

I have known for a long time that Baltimore is special. The achdus, the tolerance of yiddin who come from different backgrounds or make different choices, the incredible avoidance of loshon hora have all impressed me ever since I moved here 14 years ago.
But what I did not realize was how much deep and profound kindness, true love for fellow yiddin is found within our community. In large part I suppose this is because my family did not need to rely on the kindnesses of others – so while we knew Bikur Cholim and Chai Lifeline (among others) and good people existed, we did not really understand how these institutions and individuals can make all the difference for someone who needs help, who may be in a dark place and in need of ...

New York - Yemeni-Americans are criticizing the New York Post over its front page last week that featured a photograph of the burning World Trade Center and a quote from Democratic Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar that some say was dismissive of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
On Sunday, The New York Times reports the Yemeni American Merchant Association announced a formal boycott of the tabloid after Yemini bodega owners in New York had earlier agreed stop selling the newspaper.

Valley Stream, NY - Police on Long Island said a small plane carrying three people went down in a residential neighborhood of Valley Stream Sunday night.
Newsday reports that a disoriented pilot flying a rented single-engine plane flying in thick fog with a disoriented pilot ran out of fuel and clipped the roof of a church just after 10 p.m.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the three on board, all of Flushing, Queens, were associated with a flight school at Republic Airport in Farmingdale. He identified the pilot as Dongl Kim, 27, and the passengers as Hung Joo-Na, 29 and Jung Woo, 26. He said the plane had been rented at Republic. All three sustained minor injuries.

Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday urged Boeing Co to fix and “rebrand” its troubled 737 MAX jetliner following two fatal crashes even as U.S. regulators continued to work with the planemaker and airlines regarding the now-grounded aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been meeting with representatives from American Airlines Group Inc, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines Co over the next steps after more than 300 Boeing 737 MAXs were grounded worldwide.

BALTIMORE, MD — A tornado watch is in effect for 13 Maryland counties, plus the city of Baltimore, until early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. At 6:05 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service issued the tornado watch, which runs until 3 a.m. on April 15.
Two rounds of showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected Sunday night into Monday that could generate damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado. Heavy rain in thunderstorms may lead to isolated instances of flooding, the weather service says.

At least eight people have died, including two children who were crushed inside a car in Angelina County, Texas, as a result of severe storms that ripped through the South over the weekend, according to The Associated Press.
Two people, including a 13-year-old, died in floodwaters Saturday near Ouachita Parish, AP reported. The teen died during flash flooding in the community of Bawcomville, near Monroe, and was pulled from a drainage canal, according to reports.

Jerusalem - The Israeli military says it’s investigating the fatal shooting of a Palestinian man by an Israeli civilian earlier this month near the West Bank city of Nablus.
The inquiry comes the same day as Sunday’s announcement by Israeli rights group B’Tselem saying it found inconsistencies in the initial report that the Palestinian man was armed with a knife.
On April 3, the Israeli driver shot Mohammed Abdel Fattah, 23, who he said tried to stab him after hurling a stone at his car.
Since 2015, Palestinians have killed over 50 Israelis in West Bank attacks, while Israeli forces have killed over 260 Palestinians there in the same period. Israel says most were attackers, but the army also has also used deadly force during clashes between protesters and soldiers.

Budapest - Thousands of Hungarians attended the annual March of the Living in Budapest on Sunday to commemorate victims of the Holocaust, including Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary who refused to abandon her Jewish charges during World War Two.
Israel’s Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem estimates that 565,000 Hungarian Jews were killed in the Holocaust, most of them deported to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland between May and July 1944.
Haining, who had taught Christian and Jewish girls at a boarding school of the Church of Scotland’s Mission in Budapest, was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and later died in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Read more at Reuters
