Jerusalem - The Israeli military says it’s investigating the fatal shooting of a Palestinian man by an Israeli civilian earlier this month near the West Bank city of Nablus. The inquiry comes the same day as Sunday’s announcement by Israeli rights group B’Tselem saying it found inconsistencies in the initial report that the Palestinian man was armed with a knife. On April 3, the Israeli driver shot Mohammed Abdel Fattah, 23, who he said tried to stab him after hurling a stone at his car. Since 2015, Palestinians have killed over 50 Israelis in West Bank attacks, while Israeli forces have killed over 260 Palestinians there in the same period. Israel says most were attackers, but the army also has also used deadly force during clashes between protesters and soldiers.
Budapest - Thousands of Hungarians attended the annual March of the Living in Budapest on Sunday to commemorate victims of the Holocaust, including Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary who refused to abandon her Jewish charges during World War Two. Israel’s Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem estimates that 565,000 Hungarian Jews were killed in the Holocaust, most of them deported to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland between May and July 1944. Haining, who had taught Christian and Jewish girls at a boarding school of the Church of Scotland’s Mission in Budapest, was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and later died in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Florida - President Donald Trump may have threatened to transport illegal immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities to “make everybody crazy” and generate media attention, Republican U.S. Senator Rick Scott said on Sunday. Trump said on Friday he was considering sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, prompting U.S. mayors to accept such an offer as the battle over border security rages. Sanctuary cities are local jurisdictions that generally give undocumented immigrants safe harbor by refusing to use their resources to help enforce federal immigration laws that could lead to deportations. Many such jurisdictions are Democratic strongholds. Speaking to CNN’s “State of the Union,” Scott said he did not know if transporting immigrants to these jurisdic...
Ambalavao, Madagascar - Babies wail as a nurse tries to reassure mothers who have come to vaccinate their children against a measles outbreak that has killed more than 1,200 people in this island nation where many are desperately poor. Madagascar faces its largest measles outbreak in history, with cases soaring well beyond 115,000, but resistance to vaccinating children is not the driving force behind the rise. Measles cases are rising in the United States and elsewhere, in part because of misinformation that makes some parents balk at receiving a vaccine. New York City is trying to halt an outbreak by ordering mandatory vaccinations in one Brooklyn neighborhood. In Madagascar, many parents want to protect their children but face immense challenges, including the lack of resources. Onl...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Far from the din of Washington, Ivanka Trump toured businesses run by women in Ethiopia on Sunday while promoting a White House global economic program for women. President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior adviser visited a coffee shop and textile company in Addis Ababa. It was her first stop in Africa on a four-day trip to Ethiopia and Ivory Coast on behalf of a White House project intended to boost 50 million women in developing countries by 2025. Aiming to offer assistance and learn about the struggles of women in business, she took part in a traditional coffee ceremony, visited with weavers and announced new financial support for businesses. “Investing in women is smart development policy and it’s smart business,” Trump said, sitting...
New York -  At 6 feet, 5 inches tall, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stands out in a crowd. But does he have any shot of standing out in the packed field of potential Democratic candidates for president? A would-be progressive standard bearer, de Blasio has spent the past few months exploring a run, traveling to events in early primary states including New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, and appearing on “The Simpsons” and “The View.” So far, scant evidence of enthusiasm for his candidacy has emerged. He’s drawn sparse crowds — or no crowds at all — at his out-of-state speaking engagements. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found 76% of New York City voters believe their mayor should not run. The headlines chronicling his flirt...

Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., who has seen his poll numbers surge in recent weeks, officially declared on Sunday that he's running for president – in a speech where he highlighted both his progressive values and Midwestern upbringing. "And now, I can confidently say that South Bend is back." He added: "There’s a long way for us to go. Life here is far from perfect. "From today, we're working on Beresheet 2," SpaceIL Chairman Morris Kahn said on Channel 12's "Meet the Press" program yesterday evening. "A moment after a divisive election campaign, Israelis united, the winners and the losers, in the hope that the Beresheet spacecraft would land safely on the Moon. It wasn't a soft landing, but we had a selfie with the Israeli flag there, good reason for pride," program host Rina Mazliah said, "but perhaps there's hope for the future." Kahn said he did not have an empty feeling, but rather very good and positive feelings. "I felt warmth and backing, I felt something wonderful and encouraging" he said. Jerusalem - A delegation from Israel that was due to attend a conference in Bahrain this week has pulled out due to security concerns, the organizers said on Sunday, after Bahrainis held an extensive campaign against the visit. A spokeswoman for Israel’s Economy Ministry said a planned visit to Bahrain this week by Israel’s Economy Minister Eli Cohen had been “delayed because of political issues.” Israel and the Gulf Arab countries are in the midst of a diplomatic push aimed at forging an alliance against their common enemy Iran. Their efforts have become increasingly public after years of mostly covert contact due to strong opposition to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The group of around 30 Israeli business executives and government officials...
Berlin - Over 300 tissue samples from people killed by the Nazi regime and kept by a Berlin doctor will be laid to rest in a ceremony in Berlin on May 13, 74 years after the end of World War Two, Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday. The tiny samples were discovered in 2016 in the estate of anatomy professor Hermann Stieve from the University of Berlin, who had received the bodies of German anti-Nazi fighters for dissection, sometimes just minutes after they were killed at the Berlin-Ploetzensee prison. Stieve, who died of a stroke in 1952, dissected the bodies of the mostly female victims for his research and then had them cremated and interred, sometimes in mass graves. The samples - most less than a millimeter long - were found in small black boxes, and some were labeled with...
Washington - President Donald Trump did not wish any harm in his Twitter post criticizing Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s comments on the 9/11 attacks, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Sunday. “Certainly President is wishing no ill will, certainly not violence towards anyone,” Sanders told broadcaster ABC News’ “This Week” show. “But the President is absolutely and should be calling out the congresswoman for her, not only one-time, but history of antisemitic comments,” she said. Lawmakers from Trump’s Republican party have accused Omar of minimizing the 9/11 attacks, while critics of the president say he took Omar’s words out of context in order to stoke anti-Muslim sentiment. On Saturday, Trump tweeted a vid...
Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday pushed back against criticism he received after saying this week that he is a millionaire. “I didn’t know that it was a crime to write a good book, which turned out to be a best-seller,” the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate told a crowd in Gary, Ind. “I don’t apologize for writing a book that was No. 3 on The New York Times best-seller [list],” he added but reiterated his belief in a “progressive tax system which demands that the wealthiest people in this country finally start paying their fair share in taxes.” “If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too,” he told the New York Times.  Read more at The Hill.
Israeli planes targeted a military position near the province of Hama in Syria on Saturday, but Syrian air defenses intercepted and downed some of the rockets, Syrian state television said on Saturday. Citing military sources, SANA news agency and Syrian state television said that Israeli aircraft had targeted “one of our military positions toward the city of Masyaf.” “The enemy missiles were dealt with and some of them were shot down before reaching their target, resulting in the damage of a few buildings and the injury of three fighters,” SANA added. Since the Syrian civil war started, Israel has carried out scores of military strikes in Syria against suspected arms transfers and deployments by Iranian forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies who are backing ...

All of Southwest’s 737 Max 8 airplanes have been removed from flight schedules through Aug. 5, the company announced. It was unclear how many flights would be affected or canceled as a result of the decision. The company’s president, Tom Nealon, released a statement that said a “limited number of customers” were being affected by the continued grounding of the Max 8 jets, which occurred after the model was involved in two fatal crashes in six months. “The limited number of customers, who have already booked their travel and will be affected by this amended schedule, are being proac...
Ecuador blew through nearly a million dollars a year hosting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its embassy in London, officials revealed Saturday. The country shelled out a total of $6.5 million on behalf of Assange, who went into hiding there in August 2012 but was dragged out and arrested on Thursday. Most of that $6.5 million was spent on security, according to the Daily Mail. The rest was used for medical expenses, food and washing his clothing. The 47-year-old asylum seeker was reportedly abusive toward the embassy staff, ate with his fingers, infrequently bathed or did laundry — and even smeared feces on the walls. Read more at NY POST
