Washington - As the world anxiously awaits the findings of the Russia investigation, special counsel Robert Mueller flashed a smile Sunday after going to church with his wife in Washington. Mueller and his wife, Ann, were at the morning service at St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House. The couple filed out in a line of parishioners after the services. Mueller was smiling outside the church before he walked directly past the White House and headed to his car. Mueller officially concluded his investigation on Friday into possible coordination between Russia and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. He has remained an elusive figure in Washington since his appointment in May 2017, never making a single public comment on an investigation that has shadowed the presiden...

A second survivor of the Parkland shooting has died by suicide, the Coral Springs Police Department in Florida confirmed to the Miami Herald on Sunday. Police told the newspaper that a current Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student died in “an apparent suicide” on Saturday night. The death of this student follows that of 19-year-old Sydney Aiello, a survivor of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, who died by suicide last weekend. Aiello was a young woman who a Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher described as a joy to have in class. Aiello was close friends with Meadow Pollack, one of 17 people to be killed by a mass shooter last year. Aiello's mother said that her daughter felt survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder...
Ocean Township’s protracted battle to block a Yeshiva and dorm for 96 college-age students had nothing to do with concerns about nearby Lakewood’s expanding Orthodox Jewish community, the mayor said. “This wasn’t about religion,” said Mayor Christopher Siciliano, adding that Ocean itself has a large Jewish community and more synagogues than churches. “It was about preventing the overuse of a property in a residential neighborhood.” The fight over the 3-acre site on Logan Road in Ocean’s Wanamassa neighborhood came to what looks like a peaceful end on Thursday night, when the township council voted 5-0 to authorize Siciliano to close on a deal to buy the property for $2 million, thus keeping it out of the hands of the Lakewood-base...

Addis Ababa - The warning and training requirements set for the now-grounded 737 Max 8 aircraft may not have been adequate, in light of the Ethiopian plane crash that killed 157 people, the chief of Ethiopian Airlines said Saturday. After the Lion Air crash off Indonesia in October, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing “came up with contents that we incorporated in our working manuals and also briefed all our pilots. But today we believe that might not have been enough,” Tewolde Gebremariam told The Associated Press in an interview in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines insists the carrier’s pilots went through all the extra training required by Boeing and the FAA to fly the 737 Max 8 jet. The March 10 crash killed people from 35 countries. ...
Majdal Shams - Dozens of Druze Arabs, some carrying Syrian flags and pictures of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, gathered on the Golan Heights on Saturday to protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for Israeli sovereignty over the territory. The mountainous plateau was part of Syria until Israel captured it in the 1967 Middle East war, annexing it in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally. Israel regards the Golan as a strategic asset because its peaks overlook northern Israeli towns and southwest Syria, where battles from an eight-year civil war have raged in view. Some 22,000 Druze, an Arab minority who practice an offshoot of Islam, live in the Israeli-occupied Golan, and many still have relatives on the Syrian side of the fortified boundary. “This land ha...
New York - Rockland County legislators have adopted a new law that bans most single-use plastic bags at retail outlets, restaurants and grocery stores. In a bipartisan 14-3 vote, lawmakers backed a measure that was sponsored by County Legislators Laurie Santulli (R-Congers) and Nancy Low-Hogan (D-South Nyack). Passage followed a two-hour public hearing where speakers overwhelmingly supported the ban. The resolution was sent to the County Executive on Wednesday. He has 21 days to approve it, veto it or take no action. “Plastic bags not only make Rockland County look terrible, they cause problems for our solid waste facility and pose a significant threat to the environment,” Legislator Santulli said. “A simple change in our habits – switching to paper and reusable ...

The centerpiece of his visit will be two meetings with US President Donald Trump. The first is a working meeting scheduled for Monday and the second is a dinner Tuesday evening. Netanyahu made clear that he will thank the US president for his historic recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and also discuss with him how to further rollback Iran’s efforts in the region and its drive to obtain nuclear weapons. Netanyahu said before taking off that there has never been a closer relationship between a US president and an Israeli prime minister, and he asserted that this was "a very, very important asset&...
Washington - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was glowing as he stepped up to a podium in the backyard of his Jerusalem home to welcome U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to a holiday dinner. Less than an hour earlier, President Donald Trump had surprised the world by announcing that the U.S. would reverse policy and recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel seized from Syria after the Six-Day War of 1967. Senior U.S. and Israeli officials had been told privately that such an announcement was in the works, but that it wouldn’t come until Netanyahu visited Washington next week. Instead, Trump abruptly tweeted the news, delaying the Thursday dinner celebrating the Jewish holiday of Purim so Netanyahu could call the president to t...
More than 20,000 people have signed petitions calling for New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her response to a pair of mosque shootings that killed 50 people. A French petition calling for the prime minister to win the prestigious annual award had nearly 3,000 signatures. “If a Nobel Prize for Peace could be given to a spontaneous statement for wisdom and courage, rather to a person, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern deserves it,” a message on the change.org petition reads. The statement goes on to praise Ardern for her advocacy on gun control legislation, adding that her “strong leadership after the shootings ...
