New York, NY - Feb. 18, 2019 -  - Ohr Chadash students participated in and led activities at the Jewish Volunteer Connection program on Martin Luther Kings Day, where 11-year-old BZ Openden and his classmates prepared Blessing Bags to hand out to homeless people. The bags contained items such as socks, snacks, chapstick, water, tissues, lotion etc. A "Blessing Bag" BZ handed his bags out in person on a visit to NYC today. He personally thanked a veteran for his service and learned what it means to "pay it forward."
New York - The years-long hot market for businesses may start to cool, perhaps as soon as this year. That’s the finding of a survey of brokers and advisers who help owners and buyers complete sales of small and mid-size businesses. The survey conducted by researchers at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and two industry groups, the International Business Brokers Association and the M&A Source, questioned 319 business brokers and mergers and acquisitions advisers. Eighty-three percent of the survey participants said the strong M&A market will be over within two years. Nearly a third of the participants were more pessimistic, saying it wouldn’t last through 2019. The problem is the economy. Participants said they were concerned that overall busi...
The Philippine health secretary says 136 people, mostly children, have died of measles and 8,400 others have been sickened in an outbreak blamed partly on recent vaccination fears. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said Monday a massive immunization drive that started last week in hard-hit Manila and four provincial regions may contain the outbreak by April. Duque said a government information drive is helping restore public trust in the government’s immunization program, which was marred in 2017 by an anti-dengue vaccine made by French drugmaker Sanofi which was blamed for the deaths of at least three children. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the anti-vaccination movement one of 2019’s top 10 health threats, saying that measles cases have risen globally b...
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that Brooklyn shuls will receive more security after an attack on a Chabad shul on Friday night. “The NYPD is adding security to this synagogue and others nearby,” the mayor said Sunday in a tweet which linked to a local article about the attack on the Chabad of Bushwick. “If you know anything about this incident, contact them immediately. New York City stands for tolerance and we will arrest anyone involved in anti-Semitic crimes. Attacks like this must stop,” the tweet also said. The large plate glass window in the Chabad building was smashed by vandals as Rabbi Menachem Heller, his wife, and nine children say around the Shabbos table on Friday night. Jerusalem - Israeli police say they have arrested five Palestinians for allegedly “causing a disturbance” at a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site. The men took part in a prayer protest Monday outside a section of the hilltop compound that has been closed by Israeli court order for over a decade. Muslim religious officials convened in the closed area last week, and Israeli police placed a lock on a fence in response. Videos purportedly of Monday’s incident show several men damaging the fence. The site — known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary — is considered the holiest place in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. Any change to the status quo, no matter how minor, has the potential to ignite tensions.
Washington - Kamala Harris had the best campaign roll-out. Amy Klobuchar’s snowy debut showed grit. Elizabeth Warren’s opening campaign video was a bit odd. Take it from an unlikely armchair pundit sizing up the 2020 Democratic field: President Donald Trump. In tweets, public remarks and private conversations, Trump is making clear he is closely following the campaign to challenge him on the ballot. Facing no serious primary opponent of his own — at least so far — Trump is establishing himself as an in-their-face observer of the Democratic Party’s nominating process — and no will be surprised to find that he’s not being coy about weighing in. Presidents traditionally ignore their potential opponents as long as possible to maintain their status as...

MARYLAND — Several inches of snow could be headed our way between Tuesday night and Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of Maryland as a low-pressure system approaches the region. A winter storm watch means there is "potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel," according to the weather service. At least 5 inches of snow and 0.25 inch ice are in the forecast between Tuesday and Wednesday nights, according to the winter storm watch. Heavy snow will mix with and then change to sleet and freezing rain during the watch period, according to the National Weather Service....
New York - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is investigating Southwest Airlines Co for widespread failure to accurately track the combined weight of checked bags loaded onto its jets, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Monday. The U.S. aviation safety agency’s year-long civil probe found systemic and significant mistakes with employee calculations and luggage-loading practices, resulting in potential discrepancies when pilots compute takeoff weights, the Journal said, citing government officials and internal agency documents The FAA has not decided whether to impose fines or any other punishment, the report cited people familiar with the investigation as saying. The inaccuracies ranged from a few dozen pounds to more than 1,000 pounds in excess of what the paperw...
Seattle - Amazon, which ships millions of packages a year to shopper’s doorsteps, says it wants to be greener. The online retail giant announced plans Monday to make half of all its shipments carbon neutral by 2030. To reach that goal, the online retail giant says it will use more renewable energy like solar power; have more packages delivered in electric vans; and push suppliers to remake their packaging. McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and other big companies that generate lots of waste have announced similar initiatives, hoping to appeal to customers concerned about the environment. Amazon is calling its program “Shipment Zero,” and plans to publicly publish its carbon footprint for the first time later this year.

A new poll has revealed that a third of British voters believe controversial Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is an antisemite. According to The Sunday Times, a YouGov poll shows that 34 percent of voters consider Corbyn antisemitic, while 32 percent said they didn’t know. Only 24 percent said unequivocally that he is not. Asked if the Labour Party as a whole is antisemitic, 24 percent of those surveyed answered yes. The Jewish Labour Movement’s spokesperson called the numbers “deeply depressing,” and said, “Hundreds of thousands of voters have made up their minds that Labour is a racist party that they can’t support.” Since Corbyn was elected leader of Labour in 2015, the party has been wracked by antisemitism scandals, several implicating Cor...

Executives at Channel 13 News on Sunday decided to assign tight security to anchorwoman Oshrat Kotler due to threats on her life following her statement against IDF soldiers on Saturday. Kotler made the comments following a story about soldiers from the haredi Netzach Yehuda battalion who are suspected of badly beating two bound and blindfolded Palestinian Arab suspects following their comrades’ deaths in the terrorist attack in Givat Assaf. "We send our children into the army, to the territories and receive 'human animals’. This is the result of the occupation,” declared Kotler. Kotler's words were sharply criticized on social networks as well as by politicians. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that he is "proud of the IDF soldiers ...
New Right leader and cabinet minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday that he would reject all peace plans, including that of US President Donald Trump, if they involve handing over even “one centimeter of the Land of Israel.” “Trump is a huge friend of Israel,” Bennett said in reference to the peace plan which the Trump administration is working on and is expected to unveil sometime after the election. But Bennett added firmly that he and the New Right Party could not accept any agreement that trades land for peace. “I oppose handing over one centimeter of the Land of Israel to the Arabs,” declared Bennett. “The New Right will not be joining any government predicated on creating a Palestinian state west of the Jordan. It would destroy the future ...
Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar is scheduled to raise money in March with the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) only a week after she used an anti-Semitic trope to claim Israel has paid for GOP support. Omar will be the keynote speaker at CAIR’s 4th Annual Valley Banquet on March 23 to discuss advancing justice and empowering Muslims, according to the organization’s invitation. Single tickets start at $55 per person and a table can cost upwards of $500. Hassan Shibly, the chief executive director for CAIR-Florida, will also be speaking at the event. Former President Barack Obama has met with several Democratic presidential candidates, but he is seen as unlikely to endorse any of them before the general election, even his former Vice President, Joe Biden. David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s former chief strategist, told a group of donors they should expect no endorsement to come from the former President. Axelrod confirmed in an interview that he briefed the gathering, recalling: “They asked me about Obama endorsing. I said, ‘I don’t imagine he will.’” Axelrod’s forecast matches what Obama has told friends and likely presidential candidates in private: that he does not see it as his role to settle the 2020 nomination, and prefers to let the primary unfold as a contest of ideas. Michelle Obama, th...
