Security officials have raised concerns regarding Chinese investment in Israeli technology firms, causing Israel’s government to inspect the flow of funds and businesses to rethink taking Chinese money. Israel will form an interagency government body to oversee fragile commercial agreements involving foreign businesses, according to US and Israeli officials, similar to the US’s Committee on Foreign Investment. This effort has occurred in recent months, but has incurred additional urgency due to recent objections from US and Israeli security officials about Chinese investments, including US National Security Advisor John Bolton, US Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette and Israel’s domestic spy chief. Alison Chabloz, 54, from Glossop, Derbyshire, wrote three songs mocking the Holocaust and sang them online. In the songs Chabloz suggested the Holocaust was “a bunch of lies” and referred to Auschwitz as a “theme park”. In May she was convicted of three charges relating to the songs and was given a suspended jail sentence by magistrates which she appealed against. A judge at Southwark Crown Court has upheld her conviction ruling the content was “particularly repellent” and that Chabloz was “manifestly anti-Semitic”, a ” Holocaust denier” and “utterly obsessed with what she perceives to be the wrongdoing of Jews”. Chabloz was sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years and banned from social me...

Co-leader of the recently-formed New Right party, which touts itself as a joint secular-religious venture, Shaked spoke in English to an audience of Anglo-Israelis in a question-and-answer event at the Tel Aviv Port. Asked about the New Right’s position on the ongoing conflict with Hamas, Shaked replied, “First of all, we have always said that we are ready to do reconstruction in return for disarmament, demilitarization.” “But in reality, we just can’t do it,” she said, “because Hamas is a terror organization and they are not willing to do it.” She also stated t...

Tehran - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blamed the United States and its regional allies on Thursday for a suicide bombing in southeastern Iran that killed 27 members of the country’s elite Revolutionary Guards, Iranian state TV reported. The force said on Wednesday a suicide bomber driving a vehicle laden with explosives had attacked a bus transporting members of the Guards in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan. A militant Sunni Muslim group, Jaish al Adl (Army of Justice), which says it seeks greater rights and better living conditions for the ethnic minority Baluchis, has claimed responsibility for the attack, Iranian media have reported. “The crime will remain as a ‘dirty stain’ in the black record of the main supporters of terrorism in the White House, Tel...
Philadelphia - Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz acknowledged the manager of one of the company’s shops in Philadelphia where two black men were arrested last year might not have called authorities if the two men had been white. The acknowledgement came Wednesday night at an event in Philadelphia where Schultz was confronted by the person who first shared the video of two black men getting arrested at the shop. Speaking during a stop on his book tour, Schultz — who is considering a possible 2020 presidential bid — told the audience the Starbucks manager contacted police after she “felt a threat.” But Melissa DePino, who first posted the video of the men being handcuffed and led out of the store by police, identified herself to Schultz at the event and tol...
Washington - The Senate on Thursday confirmed William Barr as attorney general, placing the veteran government official and lawyer atop the Justice Department as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Senate voted 54-45 to confirm him, mostly along party lines. Barr, who previously served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993, will succeed Jeff Sessions. Trump pushed Sessions out of office last year after railing against his decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. As the country’s chief law enforcement officer, Barr will oversee the remaining work in Mueller’s investigation into potential coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign and decide how much Congress and the public know about its concl...
Majdal Shams, Golan Heights - Carrying Syrian flags and pictures of President Bashar al-Assad, hundreds of Arab Druze who live on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights gathered on Thursday to mark the annexation of the territory Israel captured from Syria in the 1960s. Dressed in traditional black garb and white hats, the protesters chanted, pledging loyalty to Syria. “This land is the land of our fathers and grandfathers, the land is ours. No one has the right to it other than the Syrians,” said Qasem Mahmoud al-Safadi from the village of Majdal Shams. The Golan was part of Syria until Israel captured it in the 1967 Middle East war. Israel annexed the territory in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally. The Druze are an Arab minority who practice an offshoot of Islam a...
Warsaw - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Thursday released a video of a closed meeting in which senior Gulf Arab officials play down the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, defend Israel’s right to defend itself, and describe Iran as the greatest threat to regional peace. The video, bearing the insignia of Netanyahu’s office, gave a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes contacts the Israeli leader frequently boasts of, but which are rarely seen in public. The video was recorded on a mobile device and it was not clear who took it. Netanyahu’s office briefly made the YouTube video available to a small group of journalists traveling with him before quickly removing it. It was unclear whether his office intended to leak the information or distributed...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress’ border security measure and President Donald Trump (all times local): 3:15 p.m. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says President Donald Trump has indicated he’s prepared to sign the government funding bill and issue a national emergency on the border. McConnell said Thursday the Senate will soon vote on the bill that’s needed to avoid a partial federal shutdown Friday. The comprise measure keeps departments running through the fiscal year but without the $5.7 billion Trump wanted for the border wall with Mexico. The House is also expected to vote on the bill later Thursday. Trump’s assent would end a raucous legislative saga that commenced before Christmas and saw Trump force a record 35-day partial federal ...
Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s face beams down from election billboards depicting him as a statesman, shaking hands with U.S. President Donald Trump. Opponents portray him as a criminal. Even before he called an election for April 9, he was branded “CRIME MINISTER” in huge banners at protest rallies, a reference to three corruption investigations threatening his decade of political dominance. Love him or loathe him, the election is all about Netanyahu. Although the names of parties will be on ballot papers, the vote will amount to a referendum on Netanyahu in the shadow of his legal woes. If he wins, he will become Israel’s longest-serving prime minister this summer. “There’s no central issue other than Netanyahu’s reig...
The new committee member’s very rhetorical questions to ‘Mr. Adams’ suggested deep suspicion of America’s foreign affairs, and limited knowledge of them. The House Foreign Affairs Committee heard testimony from U.S. experts about the growing humanitarian and political crisis engulfing Venezuela. One of those testifying was Elliott Abrams, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s newly appointed Special Envoy on Venezuela in the State Department, who found himself in a viral moment. That came after Abrams read his opening statement, defining the U.S. mission as one of defending the nation’s only independent body, the National Assembly that elected Juan Guaido as its head, and which the U.S. now views as the arm of government, and Guaido as Venezuela’s onl...

PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — Hundreds of thousand across Florida observed a moment of silence Thursday morning to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland that killed 17 people. The massacre renewed the national debate on guns and school safety and turned some victims’ parents and surviving students into political activists. But Thursday’s anniversary was primarily about remembering the 14 students and three staff members who died in the third high-profile mass shooting in Florida since 2016. Many Stoneman Douglas students arrived on campus Thursday wearing the burgundy #MSDStrong T-shirts that have become an emblem of the tragedy. The moment of silence was observed at 10:17 a.m. Although, the shooting actually ...
TOULOUSE, France (AP) — European plane maker Airbus said Thursday it will stop making its superjumbo A380 in 2021 for lack of customers, abandoning the world’s biggest passenger jet and one of the aviation industry’s most ambitious and most troubled endeavors. Barely a decade after the double-deck, 500-plus-seat plane started carrying passengers, Airbus said that key client Emirates is cutting back its orders, and as a result, “we have no substantial A380 backlog and hence no basis to sustain production.” The decision could affect up to 3,500 jobs and already cost plane maker 463 million euros (about $523 million) in losses in 2018, Airbus said. The company, a European economic powerhouse, is also girding for serious disruption to its cross-continental manu...
