One of Latin America’s largest air carriers, LATAM Airlines, completed on Thursday its first-ever direct flight from the region to Israel.
The trip took place from the Chilean capital of Santiago via São Paulo/Guarulhos-Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport to Ben-Gurion International Airport outside of Tel Aviv. This is the sole direct route from Latin America to Israel, and will function once a day on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Rockland health officials have confirmed six cases of whooping cough across the county and five more cases are under investigation, LOHUD reports.
The cases are spread out across the county, and there are fewer than in previous years when there were more than two-dozen cases, according to county spokesman John Lyon. There were 95 confirmed cases of measles as of Monday and another seven under investigation.
LOHUD points out that pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. President Trump said Sunday that former Attorney General Jeff Sessions “should be ashamed of himself” for allowing the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference to proceed, levying yet another attack on one of his favorite targets for criticism.
Trump issued a series of tweets attacking the investigation as a “Democrat scam” that is “very bad for our country,” and pushing the unproven theory among some conservatives that Mueller’s team has led witnesses to make false statements.

The IDF announced that its forces, along with the Shin Bet, had located and confiscated the firearm used in the shooting attack at the Givat Assaf Junction last Thursday.
The gun Israeli security forces found was a Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK-47), which was located with several magazines.
The forces also found the stolen weapon of one of the soldiers who was wounded in the attack.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former FBI Director James Comey had harsh words for House Republicans on Monday, saying their silence in response to President Donald Trump's attacks on the Justice Department is "shameful."
Comey said Republicans "have to have the courage to stand up and speak the truth, not be cowed by mean tweets or fear of their base."

The State of New York has published new guidelines to ensure that nonpublic schools, including Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs, provide an education that is “substantially equivalent” to that of the public schools. What this means is that every single Cheider, Yeshiva Ketanah, Yeshiva Gedolah and Bais Yaakov, from elementary through high school, has to meet specific government standards about what they teach and how long they teach it for. The guidelines represent an unacceptable government intrusion into the autonomy of our mosdos. It should be up to the Vaad HaChinuch of each yeshiva, or the Moreh Hora’ah for the Kehillah with which that yeshiva is affiliated, to decide what our children learn.

Baltimore, MD - Dec. 17, 2018 - As you may have already read, a letter that arrived by mail at Beth El on Park Heights Ave was opened today and according to reports may have contained some kind of substance that made at least two office staff members sick. The same letter was recently discovered at Yeshivas Neimas Hatorah, Ner Tamid, Beit Yakov Safra, Cheder Chabad and Cong. Tiferes Yisroel. The envelope was not opened due to the news of the previous incident and is now being investigated by Baltimore County and City Police and HAZMAT.

Pikesville, MD - Dec. 17, 2018 - 3:09 PM - Emergency officials are checking out people who fell ill at the Beth El School in Pikesville after an envelope was opened Monday, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.
Hazardous materials crews were called around 12:45 p.m. to the school in the 8100 block of Park Heights Avenue.
Two adult patients were being evaluated by paramedics for mild symptoms after they opened an envelope, fire officials said.

San Francisco - Airbnb says it hasn’t reversed its plan to stop listing properties in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Earlier Monday, Israel’s tourism minister, Yariv Levin, said Airbnb pledged “not to implement” its decision during a meeting between the two sides. Airbnb’s plan would affect around 200 properties.
But Airbnb says that report was inaccurate. The San Francisco-based company says it is developing the tools needed to implement its policy while it continues to talk with stakeholders.
The company announced last month that it would stop listing properties in the settlements, which are considered illegal by most of the world.

Updated as of 2:41 PM: Two adults were subsequently evaluated at the scene for mild symptoms. Crews scanned the building with meters for chemicals and gases, but fire officials said nothing significant has been detected. Thirty-three staff and 78 students remain at the school.Additional information was received that the package arrived today and it was an envelope from Dallas, Texas containing Christian religious information regarding being "saved".

Washington - President Donald Trump early on Monday again criticized the Federal Reserve for its current series of interest-rate increases, days before the U.S. central bank is expected to push up interest rates again.
“It is incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris is burning and China way down, the Fed is even considering yet another interest rate hike. Take the Victory!” Trump wrote in a tweet.
Almost all economists expect the Fed to raise rates again at its meeting this week, while many also see the central bank making increases next year, although at a slower pace in the face of a possible economic recession.

Scotland - Memorial services in the Scottish town of Lockerbie will this week mark the 30th anniversary of the bombing of a Pan Am jumbo jet that killed 270 people.
The jet exploded over Lockerbie on route from London to New York on December 21, 1988. All 259 people on board were killed. Another 11 people were killed on the ground. It is the deadliest ever militant attack in Britain.
Libyan intelligence officer Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was jailed for life in 2001 after being found guilty of the attack, in association with others who were never identified. Megrahi was later released because he was suffering from cancer.

United Nations - The United Nations and the Palestinian Authority appealed on Monday for $350 million in aid for Palestinians next year, saying much more was needed but they had to be realistic after a year of funding cuts.
The 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan focused on Palestinians most in need of food, healthcare, shelter, water and sanitation, said Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Jerusalem - Airbnb’s decision to remove their listings in Jewish settlements throughout the West Bank will not be implemented, according to reports circulated after the meeting between Israel’s Tourism Minister Yariv Levin and Vice President of Airbnb Chris Lahan.
Levin said that he will continue to act in coordination with Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely to ensure that all Israeli citizens receive equal treatment.
