One of Latin America’s largest air carriers, LATAM Airlines, completed on Thursday its first-ever direct flight from the region to Israel. The trip took place from the Chilean capital of Santiago via São Paulo/Guarulhos-Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport to Ben-Gurion International Airport outside of Tel Aviv. This is the sole direct route from Latin America to Israel, and will function once a day on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. “After years of separation and as a result of the unprecedented momentum in tourism traffic into Israel, we inaugurate today the first direct flight from South America,” said Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin. “The arrival in Israel of LATAM Airlines—one of the largest in South America—is...
Rockland health officials have confirmed six cases of whooping cough across the county and five more cases are under investigation, LOHUD reports. The cases are spread out across the county, and there are fewer than in previous years when there were more than two-dozen cases, according to county spokesman John Lyon. There were 95 confirmed cases of measles as of Monday and another seven under investigation. LOHUD points out that pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can affect anyone but is especially dangerous for babies under 12 months old. The most effective way to prevent whooping cough is through vaccination. The vaccine is often combined with...
President Trump said Sunday that former Attorney General Jeff Sessions “should be ashamed of himself” for allowing the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference to proceed, levying yet another attack on one of his favorite targets for criticism. Trump issued a series of tweets attacking the investigation as a “Democrat scam” that is “very bad for our country,” and pushing the unproven theory among some conservatives that Mueller’s team has led witnesses to make false statements. “People are starting to see and understand what this Witch Hunt is all about,” Trump added. “Jeff Sessions should be ashamed of himself for allowing this total HOAX to get started in the first place!” “The Russian Witch...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former FBI Director James Comey had harsh words for House Republicans on Monday, saying their silence in response to President Donald Trump's attacks on the Justice Department is "shameful." Comey said Republicans "have to have the courage to stand up and speak the truth, not be cowed by mean tweets or fear of their base." He was on Capitol Hill for a second closed-door interview with two Republican-led committees investigating what they say was bias at the Justice Department before the 2016 presidential election. Republicans argue department officials conspired against Trump as they started an investigation into his ties to Russia and cleared Democrat Hillary Clinton in a separate probe of her email use. Democrats have called the GOP investigation "nonsense....
Another day of big losses knocked U.S. stocks to their lowest levels in more than a year Monday. Selling was widespread. Investors dumped high-growth technology and retail companies as well as steadier, high-dividend companies. Hospitals and health insurers slumped after a federal judge in Texas ruled that the 2010 Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 507 points after a 496-point drop Friday, and all the major stock indexes fell at least 2 percent. Oil closed below $50 a barrel for the first time since October 2017. Bonds rose and their yields fell. Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide Investment Management, attributed Monday’s action in stocks to investor concerns about the slowing global economy. But he felt it was ...

The State of New York has published new guidelines to ensure that nonpublic schools, including Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs, provide an education that is “substantially equivalent” to that of the public schools. What this means is that every single Cheider, Yeshiva Ketanah, Yeshiva Gedolah and Bais Yaakov, from elementary through high school, has to meet specific government standards about what they teach and how long they teach it for. The guidelines represent an unacceptable government intrusion into the autonomy of our mosdos. It should be up to the Vaad HaChinuch of each yeshiva, or the Moreh Hora’ah for the Kehillah with which that yeshiva is affiliated, to decide what our children learn. In recognition of the seriousness of this challenge, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTo...

Baltimore, MD - Dec. 17, 2018 - In the first aliyah of Parshas Vayechi, Yaakov asks Yosef to bury him in Eretz Canaan. Although Yosef's mother, Rachel was buried along the way, and not in Eretz Canaan, Yaakov makes sure that Yosef will bury him in the proper place. We explore the relationship of Yaakov and Rachel, and the critical element that Yosef added to their relationship. We discuss how Yosef seems to be above his brothers, as his children are considered to be like the children of Yaakov. Yosef's dream of the sun, moon and stars bowing down to him is fulfilled in a certain sense, as Rachel and Yaakov 'bow' to him, who brings out the full power of their relationship. San Francisco - Airbnb says it hasn’t reversed its plan to stop listing properties in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Earlier Monday, Israel’s tourism minister, Yariv Levin, said Airbnb pledged “not to implement” its decision during a meeting between the two sides. Airbnb’s plan would affect around 200 properties. But Airbnb says that report was inaccurate. The San Francisco-based company says it is developing the tools needed to implement its policy while it continues to talk with stakeholders. The company announced last month that it would stop listing properties in the settlements, which are considered illegal by most of the world. The decision prompted uproar in Israel. Officials accused the company of anti-Semitism and threatened to imp...

Washington -  President Donald Trump early on Monday again criticized the Federal Reserve for its current series of interest-rate increases, days before the U.S. central bank is expected to push up interest rates again. “It is incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris is burning and China way down, the Fed is even considering yet another interest rate hike. Take the Victory!” Trump wrote in a tweet. Almost all economists expect the Fed to raise rates again at its meeting this week, while many also see the central bank making increases next year, although at a slower pace in the face of a possible economic recession. Trump has loudly and frequently blasted the Fed in recent months for this year&rsq...
Jerusalem - Amid rising tension in the North, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Monday that Israel has missiles that can reach any target throughout the Middle East. “They develop offensive missiles here that can reach any place in the region and any target,” Netanyahu said during a visit to Israel Aerospace Industries outside of Tel Aviv. “This is an offensive force that belongs to the State of Israel and is relevant for all of our different fronts. They develop weapons here that don’t exist in any other country. “There is a group of minds and people here who develop the best of the defenses needed for the State of Israel. This includes micro satellites that are fired into space, and some missiles that you see here behind me. Space is a huge fiel...
Scotland -  Memorial services in the Scottish town of Lockerbie will this week mark the 30th anniversary of the bombing of a Pan Am jumbo jet that killed 270 people. The jet exploded over Lockerbie on route from London to New York on December 21, 1988. All 259 people on board were killed. Another 11 people were killed on the ground. It is the deadliest ever militant attack in Britain. Libyan intelligence officer Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was jailed for life in 2001 after being found guilty of the attack, in association with others who were never identified. Megrahi was later released because he was suffering from cancer. In 2003, Muammar Gaddafi accepted Libya’s responsibility for the bombing and paid compensation to the victims’ families but he did not admit to personall...
United Nations - The United Nations and the Palestinian Authority appealed on Monday for $350 million in aid for Palestinians next year, saying much more was needed but they had to be realistic after a year of funding cuts. The 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan focused on Palestinians most in need of food, healthcare, shelter, water and sanitation, said Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem. Donations were down in many areas around the world, he said. But local aid work took a particularly hard hit this year when the United States ended funding for the U.N. agency that helps 5 million Palestinian refugees. “Humanitarian actors are faced with record-low funding levels of this year, at the same time we face massive and incr...
Jerusalem - Airbnb’s decision to remove their listings in Jewish settlements throughout the West Bank will not be implemented, according to reports circulated after the meeting between Israel’s Tourism Minister Yariv Levin and Vice President of Airbnb Chris Lahan. Levin said that he will continue to act in coordination with Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely to ensure that all Israeli citizens receive equal treatment. In November, Airbnb agreed to boycott West Bank settlements and announced plans Monday to remove settler listings from its popular website of temporary rentals in 191 countries. Read more at JPost
