The head of a Jewish school in Queens is faulting The New York Times for illustrating an article about “subpar education” at Jewish schools with a photo of his institution, which he says has sent six of its alumni to Harvard Law School in the past decade. The statement from the Rabbi Yaakov Bender of Yeshiva Darchei Torah is as follows:

Jerusalem - The Israeli military says it has opened an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Palestinian man after a video surfaced appearing to show him being shot in the back. The security-camera video shows Mohammed Habali walking in an alleyway holding a stick when he is shot from behind and falls down on his face. Several other young males are standing nearby or walking away in the same direction as Habali. A military statement on Sunday says dozens of Palestinians were hurling stones at soldiers during “operational activity” last week in the West Bank town of Tulkarem. It says soldiers responded with “riot dispersal means” and live fire and that military police are now investigating the shooting. It gave no details on when the probe would be complet...

Two possible suspects are in police custody, the FBI said. Police officials told WABC-TV that two undercover FBI agents were sitting in a car when shots were fired from a vehicle driving by, and the agents returned fire. Agudath Israel of America congratulates President Trump on his nomination of William Barr to serve as the next Attorney General of the United States. From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Barr served as Attorney General in the administration of President George H.W. Bush, and Agudath Israel had occasion to work closely with him on issues of concern to the Orthodox Jewish community. He proved himself to be a great champion of religious liberty, as he took a leadership role in protecting the civil rights of Orthodox Jewish communities that were encountering harassment and discrimination.  The relationship between Mr. Barr and Agudath Israel was highlighted at the organization’s 70th anniversary dinner in 1992, when the Attorney General was feted with Agudath Israel’s Humanitarian Aw...
Immigration officials took 105 immigrants and foreign nationals into custody in a five-day operation that included the arrests of several people wanted by Interpol for alleged crimes in their home countries, federal officials said Friday. The sweep by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in 16 counties in N.J. also targeted immigrants who illegally re-entered the U.S. after deportation and several members of alleged gangs, including MS-13, officials said. About 80 percent of those arrested had prior criminal convictions, ICE officials said. Those arrested will appear before an immigration judge for possible deportation. Read more at NJ.com.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Israel’s crackdown along its border with Lebanon on tunnels it said were dug by Hezbollah, the Kremlin said on Saturday. Netanyahu said this week that the tunnels were meant for use by Hezbollah fighters to infiltrate Israel from Lebanon and carry out attacks. The Israeli military sent mechanical diggers, troops, and anti-tunneling equipment to the border to shut them down. During their phone call, initiated by Netanyahu, “The President of Russia stressed the importance of ensuring stability in the region,” the Kremlin statement said. Russia has links to Hezbollah’s allies in neighboring Syria where it has lent President Bashar al-Assad critical support in the country’s ci...
US President Donald Trump on Friday said he would nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to be the next American ambassador to the United Nations — replacing the highly-regarded former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, who announced on Oct. 9 that she would be stepping down as envoy to the global organization. Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the UN, swiftly welcomed Nauert’s appointment. “Ms. Nauert has stood by the State of Israel in her previous positions, and I have no doubt that the cooperation between our two countries will continue to strengthen as ambassador to the UN,” Danon said in a statement. Danon also paid tribute to Haley, who made tackling UN bias against Israel a key priority during her tenure. “In the past two ye...
Angela Merkel bowed out as leader of her Christian Democrats on Friday with an emotional speech to her conservative party as it met to pick her successor who will move into pole position to become Germany’s next chancellor. The frontrunners are Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a Merkel protege seen as the continuity candidate, and Friedrich Merz, a Merkel rival who has questioned the constitutional guarantee of asylum to all “politically persecuted” and believes Europe’s biggest economy should contribute more to the European Union. Merkel said in October she would step down as party chief but remain chancellor, an effort to manage her exit after a series of setbacks since her divisive decision in 2015 to keep German borders open to refugees fleeing war in the Middle Ea...
Tunis - Dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators have staged a protest in Tunisia’s capital against Israel and its policies toward the Palestinians. The protest on Saturday was held outside the Tourism Ministry. The country’s named tourism minister is Jewish, which is unusual in this majority Muslim country. The protesters are angry about Israeli settlements and call for a Palestinian state. The crowd included left-wing groups pushing a law that would make it a crime to normalize relations with Israel. Tunisia’s government has downplayed the proposed law, and moderate Islamist party Ennahdha warned such a bill could hurt Tunisia’s relations with Western nations and international organizations. Tunisia, like most Arab countries, doesn’t have diplomatic relati...
Washington - President Donald Trump, never known for taking criticism lying down, responded to unkind words from his former secretary of state Rex Tillerson on Friday by calling Tillerson “dumb as a rock” and “lazy as hell.” During a rare public appearance in Houston on Thursday evening, Tillerson, the former Exxon Mobil CEO, discussed his difficult tenure working for Trump. He called the president “undisciplined” and said the president “doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things.” Tillerson also said Trump frequently asked him to do things that he had to explain were illegal or otherwise ill-advised. It was an extraordinary rebuke from a man Trump once sai...
New York - Wall Street capped a turbulent week of trading Friday with the biggest weekly loss since March as traders fret over rising trade tensions between Washington and Beijing and signals of slower economic growth. The latest wave of selling erased more than 550 points from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, bringing its three-day loss to more than 1,400. For the week, major indexes are down more than 4 percent. Worries that the testy U.S.-China trade dispute and higher interest rates will slow the economy have made investors uneasy, leading to volatile swings in the market from one day to the next. On Monday, news that the U.S. and China had agreed to a 90-day truce in their escalating trade conflict drove stocks sharply higher, adding to strong gains the week before. The next day, ...
Paris - The rumble of armored police trucks and the hiss of tear gas filled central Paris on Saturday, as French riot police fought to contain thousands of yellow-vested protesters venting their anger against the government in a movement that has grown more violent by the week. A ring of steel surrounded the president’s Elysee Palace — a key destination for the protesters — as police stationed trucks and reinforced metal barriers throughout the neighborhood. Stores along the elegant Champs-Elysees Avenue and the posh Avenue Montaigne boarded up their windows as if bracing for a hurricane but the storm struck anyway Saturday, this time at the height of the holiday shopping season. Protesters ripped off the plywood protecting the windows and threw flares and other proje...
The holidays are upon us and for many that means family time in the kitchen preparing delicious baked goods and maybe even licking the spoon before the cookies go into the oven. So the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out a warning this week to, "Say No To Raw Dough!"Dr. Todd Ellerin -- who admits he doesn't bake -- said it's the raw flour and uncooked eggs that can make us sick. The Director of Infectious Diseases at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts and an instructor at Harvard Medical School says,"People may not be aware that flour is not treated to destroy bacteria and there have been outbreaks of a certain type of E. coli linked to the ingestion of raw dough," said Ellerin, director of infectious diseases at South Shore Hospital in W...

New York -  One of the world’s biggest tobacco companies is diving into the cannabis market with a $2.4 billion buy-in. Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc. is taking a 45 percent stake in Cronos Group, the Canadian medical and recreational marijuana provider said Friday. Altria will pay another $1.4 billion for warrants that if exercised, would give the Altria a 55 percent ownership stake in the Toronto company. That would mean Altria’s investment would be in the same league as the $4 billion spent earlier this year by Constellation Brands to acquire shares of Canopy Growth Corp., another Canadian pot producer. The August investment by Constellation, which makes Corona and other beverages, was the largest to date by a major U.S. corporation in the cannabis market. Whatev...
Washington - White House political director Bill Stepien and Justin Clark, the director of the office of public liaison, are leaving the administration to work on President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. Both are veterans of Trump’s 2016 operation. The White House staff moves, announced Friday, come as Trump’s political focus is shifting toward 2020 and in anticipation of a more partisan environment in Washington once Democrats take control of the House in January. Trump’s campaign manager, Brad Parscale, said in a statement that Stepien and Clark will work on “building out the political infrastructure that will support victory for President Trump and the GOP in 2020.” Stepien oversaw Trump’s midterm campaign push, which included a series ...
College Station, TX - The U.S. Secret Service has ended its detail for George H.W. Bush after nearly 40 years of protecting the former president, who was known by the code name “Timberwolf.” Bush spokesman Jim McGrath says the agents’ detail officially ended at 6 a.m. Friday following Bush’s burial on Thursday at his presidential library at Texas A&M University. Bush died on Nov. 30 at the age of 94. He was buried next to his wife, Barbara, and their daughter Robin, who died at age 3. Secret Service agents served as honorary pallbearers during some of this week’s events honoring the 41st president. On Twitter, the agency paid tribute to Bush and shared photos from 2013 , when Bush shaved his head in support of an agent’s 2-year-old son who had leu...
New York - Democrats are hitting fast forward. The first major presidential campaign announcements could come before year’s end. The Democratic National Committee plans to announce a debate framework by then featuring 15 to 20 candidates. The first primary debate could happen as early as May, a full three months before the premiere debate of the 2016 cycle. And long-rumored White House hopefuls are already bowing out. Like it or not, the 2020 presidential season has arrived. For some potential contenders, there’s an increasing sense of urgency to be in the first wave of declared candidates in what will likely be a large, unwieldy field. And for the party as a whole, there’s a desire to move forward with what’s expected to be a nasty fight — and wrap it up i...
