Jerusalem - The US Department of Justice rejected Prime Minister Netanyahu’s recent request to allow American Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard to return to Israel and to serve the rest of his sentence here. As the reason for the refusal of Netanyahu’s request the Department of Justice named the severity of the acts and offenses committed by Pollard in the 1980s. The decision came almost exactly three years after Pollard was released from the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, after serving 30 years of a life sentence behind bars for conspiracy to commit espionage. Pollard was released on “mandatory” parole on November 20, 2015 after serving exactly 30 years in prison for the crime of conspiracy to commit espionage without intent to harm the United States, by d...
Colts Neck, NJ - The investigation into a mansion fire in a small, affluent New Jersey community where two adults and two children were found dead took a turn Wednesday when authorities arrested the brother of the man who owned the house. Paul Caneiro was charged with aggravated arson stemming from a separate fire Tuesday at his residence in Ocean Township, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away from the mansion. Authorities had speculated that the two fires could be related but haven’t charged anyone in connection with the arson fire at the mansion in Colts Neck. Colts Neck is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of New York City, and the upscale enclave is home to a number of celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen. Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart and his wife oper...
Baltimore County Police have charged a volunteer firefighter after explosive devices were detonated behind an elementary school in Dundalk last weekend. Police responded to Berkshire Elementary School at 7431 Poplar Avenue, 21224 just after midnight Saturday morning, November 17, for a report of an explosion. Members of the Baltimore County Police Hazardous Devices Team responded to the scene and located evidence of a small package explosion on a bench behind the school. Investigators also obtained surveillance video of the incident that depicted a suspect placing a box on the bench, igniting the box and running away. Similar calls were received late Monday night at the same location for possible shots fired or an explosion heard. Investigators located a charred area and debris near a tr...
Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), Israel's Supreme Court rejected the request to appeal submitted by Sheikh Sayakh abu Madiam, who was sentenced to ten months in prison for repeated trespassing and illegal construction on property owned by the State in the phantom "village" in the Negev known as Al Arakib. In today's decision, Supreme Court Justice Elron found that "the criminal activity, including repeated expropriation and trespassing on property that had been cleared for housing construction, in violation of judgements handed down by the courts, goes beyond the boundaries of legitimate protest. The fact that the appellant's actions were committed against the backdrop of a public campaign does not justify granting him the right to appeal in this matter." Regavim welcomed th...
Jerusalem - An Israeli cabinet minister called on Wednesday for a boycott of Airbnb and promoted one of its rivals, escalating the government’s response to the home-rental company’s decision to delist Israel’s settlements in the occupied West Bank. “I call today on all those who support Israel and oppose discriminatory boycotts: they should cease using Airbnb and turn to other services,” Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan told a diplomatic conference hosted by the Jerusalem Post newspaper. “By the way, Booking.com is a great service,” added Erdan, the point-man in Israeli government efforts to combat pro-Palestinian boycotts. Airbnb said on Monday it would remove some 200 settlement listings after hearing criticism from people who “bel...
Former President Obama took more veiled shots at his successor this week, suggesting that the reason the U.S. is not taking more direct action against climate change is because of “hate, anger, racism — mommy issues.” Obama appeared at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago, where author Dave Eggers interviewed him about ways to mobilize Americans toward creating social change. When the topic of global warming came up, Obama’s criticism was particularly pointed. “The reason we don’t” invest in climate change policies, Obama said, “is because we are still confused, blind, shrouded with hate, anger, racism — mommy issues.” The comments drew laughter from the audience. “I mean, we — ...
Washington - Chief Justice John Roberts is pushing back against President Donald Trump for his description of a judge who ruled against Trump’s migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.” It’s the first time the Republican-appointed leader of the federal judiciary has offered even a hint of criticism of Trump, who has previously blasted federal judges who ruled against him. Roberts said Wednesday the U.S. doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” He commented in a statement released by the Supreme Court after a query by The Associated Press. Roberts said on the day before Thanksgiving that an “independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.” Last year, the president used the term a ...

News 12 reports on the the NY state Education Department updating guidance and resources to ensure every private, independent and religious school in New York is keeping up with the state’s public schools. This includes hundreds of yeshivos in Rockland County, seating approximately 27,000 children. The state Education Department says it respects a parent’s right to choose where their children are educated and plans to keep the process collaborative. Schools that do not meet state expectations will be expected to make the necessary changes to fall in line.
Frankfurt - Holiday shoppers should enjoy more spending power thanks to the recent sharp drop in oil prices, though cheaper energy could also weigh on the U.S. economy by dampening investment in shale oil production. While the fall in oil prices doesn’t yet match the 2014-2016 slump to $26 per barrel, the current decline should soon make itself felt through the global economy. The international crude benchmark, Brent, has fallen under $65 per barrel from a four-year high in early October over $86, and U.S. crude has dropped below $55 a barrel. Retailers in the U.S., who depend on heavy Christmas spending, should see a boost as lower gasoline prices give consumers more spare cash to spend on gifts. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. has fallen to $2.60 f...
Glasgow, Scotland - A Charedi rav from Israel became an unlikely social media star yesterday when stadium cameras caught him learningg Talmud during an important soccer match played yesterday in Glasgow. Rabbi Zev Leff, shlita, had agreed to take his grandchildren to the game in Hampden Park that had Israel facing off against Scotland in the Nations League game, earning Scotland a spot in the Euro 2020 playoff.  Israel had struck out early, taking a 1 - 0 lead against Scotland as reported by The Guardian (http://bit.ly/2A8qWFW), ultimately losing by a score of 3 – 2 in a nail biter that lasted nearly four hours. Cameras that panned across the stadium caught sight of Rabbi Leff, rav of Moshav Matisyahu, deeply immersed in his learning in the early part of the game as Israel ...
Baltimore, MD — November 20, 2018 - My behind-the-scenes tour of Seasons’ revitalized fleishig take-out and deli department began by trying to keep up with its new, popular chef, Chef Dan. It’s Wednesday, erev Rosh Chodesh Kislev, and he is juggling his many culinary talents as the department gears up for Shabbos. There was no sitting down for this interview! I first followed Chef Dan to the fleishig kitchen, just one of the industrial-sized kitchens behind the counter. With Shabbos coming, he especially has no time to waste. I watch as he carefully, yet confidently, sprinkles seasonings grabbed off adjacent shelving--filled with every type of spice--on his famous grilled chicken. His sesame chicken is just about ready to come out of the oven; it will quickly r...

Jerusalem - A top Israeli Cabinet minister says President Donald Trump is wasting his time trying to push for an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan. Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked says that reaching peace is currently impossible and that Trump should focus his energy elsewhere until the Palestinians are ready to compromise. Shaked spoke at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference on Wednesday. He says: “I think, personally, it is a waste of time.” The U.S. is preparing to release its long-anticipated Mideast peace plan, which Trump calls the “Deal of the Century.” Trump’s Mideast team, headed by his adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has been working on a peace proposal for months but hasn’t said when it will be released. The Palestinians consider t...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump publicly thanked Saudi Arabia for plunging oil prices just a day after he was harshly criticized for deciding not to further punish the kingdom for the killing of U.S.-based columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Trump, who made clear in an exclamation-filled statement on Tuesday that he feels that the benefits of good relations with the kingdom outweigh the possibility its crown prince ordered the killing, tweeted on Wednesday that it’s “Great!” that oil prices are falling. “Thank you to Saudi Arabia, but let’s go lower!” he wrote from his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he’s spending Thanksgiving. The international crude benchmark has fallen under $65 per barrel from a four-year high of more tha...
Washington - She’s cooked bean soup live and done laundry in public. She narrated much of what she calls “Congress camp” on Capitol Hill. We know what’s in her bank account — less than $7,000 — and what she thinks of reviews of her clothing. Such intimate details have kept Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s star on the rise since she upset Democratic veteran Joe Crowley in New York’s June primary. By the time she takes her seat in the House on Jan. 3 as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, the 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez will have blazed a new, more public trail to Washington and literally shed light on the maze of Capitol Hill. “Guys there are secret underground tunnels between all of these government buildings,” she mock-whisper...

New Delhi - An American is believed to have been killed by an isolated Indian island tribe known to fire at outsiders with bows and arrows, police said Wednesday. Police officer Vijay Singh said seven fishermen have been arrested for facilitating the American’s visit to North Sentinel Island, where the killing apparently occurred. Visits to the island are heavily restricted by the government. The Sentinelese people live on the small forested island and are known to resist all contact with outsiders, often attacking anyone who comes near. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Indian media reports said the American was on an adventure trip to the islands and his body had been spotted by the fishermen. Singh said...

Ivanka Trump and her legal team are defending her reported use of a private email address with government-related materials, but Harvard Law Professor Emeritus and frequent Donald Trump defender Alan Dershowitz isn’t impressed. “It’s hypocrisy on parade,” Dershowitz told Fox News on Tuesday, noting how President Trump and fellow Republicans railed on Hillary Clinton for her use of private email to conduct government business. At the same time, Dershowitz said that Ivanka’s private email use wan’t a big deal and there’s no reason for people to be going nuts about it in the first place. “Look, everybody uses private emails. We now have a list of probably a dozen people in public life who have used ...
