Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh has selected Fort Worth, Texas, Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald as the city's next police commissioner, the 11 News I-Team has learned Friday.
Pugh called Fitzgerald the "best choice to lead Baltimore City's crime fight ... he understands the Consent Decree, need for reform, training and community engagement."
Fitzgerald's name surfaced a month ago when he was on the finalist list. His name became public just a couple of hours after the mayor told the I-Team in an interview that she was looking for an outsider to lead the BPD.
Details of the contract between the city and Fitzgerald are not yet known.

Duisburg, Germany - The Jewish community of Duisburg-Mülheim-Oberhausen inaugurated a new cemetery in Duisburg on Sunday.
As the first act after the consecration, a Torah scroll that was no longer used was buried.
“This is a very emotional moment for me,” says Chief Rabbi David Geballe. The unfit Torah, like a faithful parishioner of flesh and blood, and the Torah as the first part of the Hebrew Bible, are not merely a collection of laws. “Jewish books have a soul and embody our history,” said the Chief Rabbi to the numerous guests.
The new cemetery had become necessary after the previously used Jewish cemetery in Mülheim had reached its capacity limits. This cemetery has been used for almost 300 years.

Tallahassee, FL - A local media report says an embattled county elections official in Florida will be resigning early next year.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported late Sunday that Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes had turned in her resignation letter earlier in the day. The report cited an attorney who works as counsel to the Broward elections office, Burnadette Norris-Weeks, as saying Snipes is to step down from her post in January.
Snipes has been the top elections official in the south Florida county since 2003 when then-Gov. Jeb Bush appointed her. She came under withering criticism for her handling of this year’s elections in the populous county as well as its legally required recount in close races for governor and U.S. Senate.

Bnei Brak - Outgoing defense minister Avigdor Lieberman was seen in Bnei Brak after visiting Sar HaTorah HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita.
The purpose of the visit was not clear, but some Israeli media are reporting that Lieberman came to write a letter in a Sefer Torah that is being dedicated by his family member.

New York - Germany is shirking its responsibility for the Holocaust by dragging its heels on returning art confiscated by the Nazis, and failing to crack down on resurgent anti-Semitism, the head of the World Jewish Congress said on Sunday.
Ronald Lauder told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that other countries, including Britain, the United States and Austria had a far better record in documenting art in their collections that had been confiscated by the Nazi regime and returning any looted pieces to their rightful owners.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said on Sunday that Netanyahu would be willing to give Education Minister Naftali Bennett the defense portfolio in place of outgoing Minister Avigdor Liberman, Channel 2 reported.However, the assumption in the political establishment is that the transfer of the defense portfolio to Bennett will be contingent on a commitment on the part of him and his party to remain in the government until the end of this term, in November 2019.

Buenos Aires - The Argentine Navy submarine that went missing a year ago off the country’s Atlantic Coast was found by a private company involved in what had been a massive search for the vessel and its 44-member crew, the defense ministry said in a news conference on Saturday.
The ARA San Juan submarine was discovered by marine tracking contractor Ocean Infinity, 907 meters (2,975 feet) below the ocean surface. The vessel was found in an underwater canyon with its tail partially “imploded,” Argentina’s Defense Minister Carlos Aguad said.
Given the poor visibility at the site, the ministry said it only had preliminary information about the state of the submarine, which was scattered in pieces on the ocean floor.

Washington - Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa is giving up the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee after shepherding 84 of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees through the confirmation process over the past two years, including Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
Grassley said he plans to become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee next year. To do that, he’ll have to give up the gavel of the Judiciary Committee, which he has held since 2015. Democrats have accused Grassley of unfairly disregarding Senate protocols and courtesies to get Trump’s nominees confirmed.

Bronx, NY - Police say almost two dozen people were injured when a New York City bus crashed into a fire truck with sirens and lights on responding to an emergency.
The 23 victims — including the bus driver and all five firefighters — were treated for minor injuries after the accident Friday in the Bronx.
Authorities say the Fire Department vehicle was responding to a medical emergency in the borough’s Tremont neighborhood around noon when it turned into the path of the bus. The impact shattered the window by the driver’s seat, sending debris flying onto the road.
The accident is under investigation. No charges have been filed.

An Israeli military officer who was seriously wounded in last Sunday’s blown special forces mission inside the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip was released from Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba on Friday.
In Sunday’s incident, another IDF officer — Lt. Col. M — was killed. Six Palestinian terrorists, including a local Hamas commander, also lost their lives in the exchange of fire that erupted after a group of elite Israeli soldiers conducting an undercover mission were exposed deep in enemy territory.
A doctor at Soroka said the wounded officer, after undergoing a complex surgical procedure and being held in an intensive care unit, was sent home on Friday in “good condition for rehabilitation.”

A measles outbreak is raging in various frum communities on the East Coast. As of Motzoei Shabbos, there are 75 confirmed cases in Rockland County (in New Square, Monsey, and Spring Valley), 24 confirmed cases in Brooklyn (in Boro Park and Williamsburg), and 14 confirmed cases with another 12 under investigation in Ocean County (in Lakewood).
The current outbreak has been traced to Eretz Yisroel, which has more than 1,500 measles cases and one child fatality from complications from the virus.
According to Lohud.com, Israel’s outbreak can be traced to people who have traveled to other areas experiencing outbreaks, especially the Ukraine, where the World Health Organization said there are over 23,000 people affected.
