Duisburg, Germany - The Jewish community of Duisburg-Mülheim-Oberhausen inaugurated a new cemetery in Duisburg on Sunday. As the first act after the consecration, a Torah scroll that was no longer used was buried. “This is a very emotional moment for me,” says Chief Rabbi David Geballe. The unfit Torah, like a faithful parishioner of flesh and blood, and the Torah as the first part of the Hebrew Bible, are not merely a collection of laws. “Jewish books have a soul and embody our history,” said the Chief Rabbi to the numerous guests. The new cemetery had become necessary after the previously used Jewish cemetery in Mülheim had reached its capacity limits. This cemetery has been used for almost 300 years. The community currently has about 2500 members. T...
Tallahassee, FL - A local media report says an embattled county elections official in Florida will be resigning early next year. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported late Sunday that Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes had turned in her resignation letter earlier in the day. The report cited an attorney who works as counsel to the Broward elections office, Burnadette Norris-Weeks, as saying Snipes is to step down from her post in January. Snipes has been the top elections official in the south Florida county since 2003 when then-Gov. Jeb Bush appointed her. She came under withering criticism for her handling of this year’s elections in the populous county as well as its legally required recount in close races for governor and U.S. Senate. On Saturday, Snipes ac...
I was pleased to receive the government’s decision to recommend that the President of Israel appoint me as Governor of the Bank of Israel. I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, and the government of Israel for the trust they have placed in me.  It is a tremendous honor for me to fill the position of Governor, which has been filled over the years by the best economists in Israel.  I am aware of the heavy responsibility placed on my shoulders, and I will do all in my power to fortify the strength and continued growth of the Israeli economy so that the entire Israeli public will benefit from its results.  I thank the outgoing governor, Dr. Karnit Flug, who is handing me a wonderfully managed institution that is leading an economy that is gr...

New York - Germany is shirking its responsibility for the Holocaust by dragging its heels on returning art confiscated by the Nazis, and failing to crack down on resurgent anti-Semitism, the head of the World Jewish Congress said on Sunday. Ronald Lauder told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that other countries, including Britain, the United States and Austria had a far better record in documenting art in their collections that had been confiscated by the Nazi regime and returning any looted pieces to their rightful owners. The United States has extended the federal statute of limitations for seeking restitution of such art to six years from the time of “actual discovery” of its identity and whereabouts. Britain has put its entire collection of paintings online at Art UK, and i...
An Israeli product was recognized in the latest issue of TIME magazine as one of the best inventions of the year. Included in TIME magazine’s list, titled “Best Inventions 2018,” is the Nanobébé, which the magazine described as a “better baby bottle.” The product was launched in February 2013 by longtime friends and biomedical engineers Ayal Lanternari and Asaf Kehat to help breastfeeding moms. “With more surface area than a traditional bottle, it allows milk to heat and cool twice as fast, which preserves critical nutrients,” the magazine explained. “Its domelike shape resembles an actual breast, which can comfort bottle — resistant tykes. And it’s topple-proof, thanks to a thin silicone edge and low center of gra...
A tweet published by The Daily Telegraph’s Middle East correspondent on Thursday revealed the lengths the Israeli military went to in order to not harm Palestinian civilians during the surge of violence in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip earlier this week. “We got a sense of how careful Israel was to avoid civilian casualties during the airstrikes in #Gaza,” Raf Sanchez wrote. “The Israeli army called one guy we met and spent 45 mins on the phone with him, getting him to evacuate his neighbours, before they blew up a Hamas media building next to his.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said on Sunday that Netanyahu would be willing to give Education Minister Naftali Bennett the defense portfolio in place of outgoing Minister Avigdor Liberman, Channel 2 reported.However, the assumption in the political establishment is that the transfer of the defense portfolio to Bennett will be contingent on a commitment on the part of him and his party to remain in the government until the end of this term, in November 2019. This morning, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked referred to her party's demand to place the defense portfolio in the hands of Minister Naftali Bennett as a condition for the continued existence of the government. "At this stage, the government is no longer a right-wing government, unfortunately," Shaked said...
Crafting better flu shots comes down to dispensing with 1940s technology, according to CSL Ltd., which says its new method of vaccine production may offer better protection against the virus that killed almost 200 American children last season. Flucelvax, an immunization produced by CSL’s Seqirus unit with cell-based technology, was 36.2 percent more effective in preventing flu-like illness last winter than conventional shots made using chicken eggs, the Melbourne-based company said in a study released Friday. Vaccination is recognized as the best way to protect against the respiratory disease, which kills as many as 650,000 people annually. Still, the shot’s effectiveness varies from year to year, depending on the closeness of the match between that season’s circulatin...
Washington - Nick Ayers could almost be confused for a college fraternity brother as he flashes a broad grin in a selfie taken with Mike Pence just moments after the Indiana governor was named Donald Trump’s running mate. In fact, the baby-faced campaign strategist in the white undershirt had a pivotal role in Trump’s selection of Pence in 2016. And two years later, Ayers’ bond with Pence is stronger than ever, as are his ties to the president. A seasoned campaign veteran at age 36, Ayers is emerging as a leading contender to replace White House chief of staff John Kelly, whose departure has long been the subject of speculation. If selected, Ayers would return a political mind to the role as Trump’s presidency enters a new, more perilous phase in which he fights ...
Buenos Aires - The Argentine Navy submarine that went missing a year ago off the country’s Atlantic Coast was found by a private company involved in what had been a massive search for the vessel and its 44-member crew, the defense ministry said in a news conference on Saturday. The ARA San Juan submarine was discovered by marine tracking contractor Ocean Infinity, 907 meters (2,975 feet) below the ocean surface. The vessel was found in an underwater canyon with its tail partially “imploded,” Argentina’s Defense Minister Carlos Aguad said. Given the poor visibility at the site, the ministry said it only had preliminary information about the state of the submarine, which was scattered in pieces on the ocean floor. Aguad could neither confirm nor deny if the vessel ...
Washington - Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa is giving up the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee after shepherding 84 of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees through the confirmation process over the past two years, including Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Grassley said he plans to become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee next year. To do that, he’ll have to give up the gavel of the Judiciary Committee, which he has held since 2015. Democrats have accused Grassley of unfairly disregarding Senate protocols and courtesies to get Trump’s nominees confirmed. The move paves the way for Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. to become the next Judiciary chairman. Graham has become a close Trump ally and was a vocal supporter of Kavanaugh&...
Bronx, NY - Police say almost two dozen people were injured when a New York City bus crashed into a fire truck with sirens and lights on responding to an emergency. The 23 victims — including the bus driver and all five firefighters — were treated for minor injuries after the accident Friday in the Bronx. Authorities say the Fire Department vehicle was responding to a medical emergency in the borough’s Tremont neighborhood around noon when it turned into the path of the bus. The impact shattered the window by the driver’s seat, sending debris flying onto the road. The accident is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
Pittsburgh, PA - Federal authorities misrepresented a social media connection between the suspect in last month’s Pittsburgh synagogue massacre and a man whose relatives reported concerns about his behavior after the shooting to the FBI, a defense attorney said Friday. A public defender representing Jeffrey Clark Jr. asked a federal magistrate to free the 30-year-old man from custody while he awaits trial on gun-related charges in Washington, D.C. Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey refused, ordering Clark held without bail. Harvey expressed concern about Clark’s “menacing” and “threatening” posts on Gab, the same social media platform used by synagogue shooting suspect Robert Bowers. “He has discussed openly killing Jews and blacks,” the m...

Washington - President Donald Trump on Friday recognized a major Republican Party donor and six other “extraordinary Americans” with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the nation reserves for a civilian. Individuals who make “outstanding contributions to American life and culture” have received the medal, Trump said, adding that it was his “true privilege” to present it to six men and one woman representing the fields of entertainment, sports, law, medicine, politics and philanthropy. Miriam Adelson is a doctor, philanthropist and wife of Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino magnate considered one of the nation’s most powerful Republican donors. The Adelsons donated $30 million to Trump’s campaign in the final months of the...
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with his Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon on Sunday in a last ditch effort to save his government. Netanyahu’s current coalition was shattered last week when Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman resigned in protest over what he described as Israel’s capitulation to Hamas terrorism after Netanyahu accepted a ceasefire following hundreds of rockets fired at Israel’s south. Soon after, the Jewish Home party announced that it would leave the coalition if its leader Naftali Bennett were not appointed Lieberman’s successor. Netanyahu met with Bennett on Friday and reportedly told Bennett he would not do so. Reports indicate that Jewish Home intends to leave the coalition. In response, both Kahlon of the Kulanu party and In...
An Israeli military officer who was seriously wounded in last Sunday’s blown special forces mission inside the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip was released from Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba on Friday. In Sunday’s incident, another IDF officer — Lt. Col. M — was killed. Six Palestinian terrorists, including a local Hamas commander, also lost their lives in the exchange of fire that erupted after a group of elite Israeli soldiers conducting an undercover mission were exposed deep in enemy territory. A doctor at Soroka said the wounded officer, after undergoing a complex surgical procedure and being held in an intensive care unit, was sent home on Friday in “good condition for rehabilitation.”
