Washington - With the loss of the Republican majority in the House, President Donald Trump is facing the prospect of endless House investigations, stymied policy efforts and fresh questions about the resilience of his unorthodox political coalition. Still, he celebrated GOP success hanging on to the Senate and distanced himself from any blame. “Tremendous success tonight. Thank you to all!” Trump tweeted late Tuesday after staying quiet for much of election night. Early Wednesday, Trump added: “Now we can all get back to work and get things done!” Trump was expected to further address the results at a White House news conference later Wednesday. On Tuesday, Trump called House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, a conversation that her office said included congratula...
West Bank - Tuning into the news at dawn on Wednesday, the extended family of Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, celebrated her victory in their home in the Israeli occupied West Bank. Tlaib, a Democrat, ran virtually unopposed in Michigan’s 13th congressional district, which encompasses southwest Detroit and its suburbs west to the city of Dearborn. She previously served in Michigan’s state legislature. She has become “a source of pride for Palestine and the entire Arab and Muslim world,” her uncle, Bassam Tlaib, said in the small village of Beit Ur Al-Fauqa. With her win, Tlaib, 44, will become the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress. Alongside incoming Minnesota Representative Ilha...
Jakarta - A crucial sensor that is the subject of a Boeing Co. safety bulletin was replaced on a Lion Air jet the day before it plunged into the Java Sea and possibly worsened other problems with the plane, Indonesian investigators said Wednesday. Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee said it had agreed with Boeing on procedures that the airplane manufacturer should distribute globally on how flight crews can deal with “angle of attack” sensor problems following the Oct. 29 crash that killed all 189 people on board. The sensor keeps track of the angle of the aircraft nose relative to oncoming air to prevent the plane from stalling and diving. But a Boeing statement said a safety bulletin, sent to airlines on Tuesday, directs flight crews to existing guid...
Phoenix - A group sent 8,000 pizzas to hungry voters as they waited in long lines that plagued polling places across the country Tuesday. The group Pizza to the Polls collects social media reports of long lines and doles out pizzas accordingly. The nonprofit enjoyed a boost in recent days because of tweets and donations from celebrities like Debra Messing, Alyssa Milano, Mandy Moore and Patton Oswalt, raising more than $300,000 over a 24-hour period. Co-founder Katie Harlow of Portland, Oregon, said she and two friends came up with the idea in 2016 after seeing long lines during the early voting. “We just wanted a way to help out and siphon our jitters into something productive,” she said. They picked pizza to keep people in line because of its mass appeal and because it&rsq...
The state’s Republican governor beat the Democratic incumbent in 2018’s most expensive Senate race. Republican Rick Scott, running for Senate after two terms as Florida governor, beat Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson in 2018’s most expensive Senate race, boosting the GOP’s odds of expanding their Senate majority. Scott used a huge amount of campaign cash — much of it his own — and his position as a Washington outsider to beat Nelson, a relatively popular incumbent who nevertheless failed to inspire much excitement in a campaign year when Democrats were energized in many races across the country. Scott’s spending advantage helped him build an early polling lead, and Nelson was never quite able to close the gap. Nelson was on...
Tallahassee - Ron DeSantis won the Florida governor’s race on Tuesday, bolstered by the strong support of fellow Republican President Donald Trump. DeSantis, 40, a conservative former congressman, defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum, 39, the staunchly liberal mayor of state capital Tallahassee who was seeking to become Florida’s first black governor and who conceded the race. Florida is the most populous of the battleground states that swing between the parties in presidential elections, but Republicans have controlled the governor’s mansion for two decades.
Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer is projected to unseat one-term Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in the North Dakota Senate race.
Baltimore, MD – Nov. 6, 2018 – History has been made in Baltimore City as Dalya Attar, an Orthodox Jew, has won one of the three delegate spots in the Maryland House of Delegates for the 41st legislative district.     Dalya ran a robust campaign that included vital issues such as education, drugs, crime and safety, to name but a few. Her platform promotes advocating for free, quality education for children, from pre-K to community college; and fighting to bring Baltimore more funding and programs to combat Baltimore City’s heroin problem. Upon taking office in January, Dalya will undoubtedly be a strong advocate in Annapolis for our community and the entire 41st district. She will bring along her passion, dedication, and solid work ethic to pursue the goa...

undalk Democrat Johnny Olszewski Jr. will be Baltimore County’s next county executive after besting Republican Al Redmer Jr. in Tuesday’s election. Olszewski continues Democratic leadership of the state’s third-largest county, a run of party dominance that dates to 1994. With more than 90 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Olszewski was holding an 57 percent to 43 percent lead over Redmer. Supporters broke out into applause and fist pumps when Olszewski's father, John Olszewski Sr., climbed the stage to share that his son had won early voting, coming in with 62 percent of the vote. The enthusiasm ticked up from there as the night wore on and campaign workers announced their unofficial tallies. “Today we vote, tomorrow we start building...
Washington - White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says a Democratic wave may look more like a “ripple.” Sanders spoke to reporters at the White House Tuesday night, as election returns were still coming in. She says, “Maybe you get a ripple but I certainly don’t think that there’s a blue wave.” She says there is still a “long way to go,” but the White House feels “good about where we are right now.” Should Republicans lose the House, Sanders says the president’s agenda is not going to change. Speaking on Fox News, Sanders said the candidates that Trump campaigned for are doing well. She also said that if Republicans should lose the House, Democrats should try to work across the aisle.
Washington - Fox News Channel projected on Tuesday that Democrats will win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. It did not project the margin of victory or elaborate immediately on the basis for its projection. Fox was alone among U.S. media outlets with the call. Democrats have been widely expected to pick up the seats needed to wrest control of the chamber from President Donald Trump’s Republicans, who were expected to maintain control of the Senate. Other media outlets said the outcome in the House was leaning in Democrats’ favor, but that it was too soon to project a Democratic victory.
New York - U.S. stock futures rose in volatile trading on Tuesday night as results of a widely anticipated midterm election started to trickle in. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 120 points after briefly falling about 100 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 also traded higher after slipping earlier in the evening. They opened for trading at 6 p.m. ET. “These are early results, but markets are extrapolating a much higher probability that Republicans keep the House and they can make big gains in the Senate,” said Dan Clifton, head of policy research at Strategas Research. “The caution is this is early and it could change.”
New York -Democrats have retained the governor’s offices in New York. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo defeated Republican Marc Molinaro on Tuesday to win election to a third, four-year term. No Republican has won a gubernatorial race there since 2002. Cuomo, who was first elected in 2010, has inundated the airwaves with ads touting his record and his criticism of President Donald Trump, spending more than $31 million so far on his re-election bid.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was projected to narrowly win a second term Tuesday by defeating Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke, who became a national media sensation during the campaign and benefited from an outpouring of outside donations and spending. With 78 percent of precincts reporting, Cruz led O'Rourke by 51 percent to 49 percent and a margin of approximately 150,000 votes out of more than six million ballots cast. Democratic hopes for an improbable upset had been raised by unusually high early voting numbers. Nearly 4.9 million people voted in Texas' 30 largest counties during the early-voting period, surpassing the total number of votes cast throughout the state in the last midterm election, according to the secretary of state’s office. However, the pol...
New Jersey - New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez has fended off his wealthy Republican challenger to win re-election despite a barrage of ads about corruption charges Menendez beat in court. Menendez won a third term on Tuesday after a grueling campaign against Republican Bob Hugin. Polls showed Hugin and Menendez much closer than expected in overwhelmingly Democratic New Jersey. Hugin dug into his deep pockets for at least $27.5 million to spend on TV ads attacking Menendez over the 2017 trial on charges that he helped a friend with Medicare billing in exchange for lavish gifts. Prosecutors decided not to retry the case after a mistrial. The race was particularly significant because Democrats are defending 26 seats, including 10 incumbents running in states that President Donald ...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia was the first congressional incumbent to lose as voters in her Northern Virginia district expressed their continued dislike of President Donald Trump. Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton won an easy victory in the wealthy suburban district outside Washington, which Hillary Clinton won by 10 percentage points. Comstock tried hard to emphasize her independence from Trump, but Wexton, a former prosecutor, portrayed the two-term incumbent as a Trump ally out of touch with the diverse, well-educated district. Comstock easily beat a Democrat in 2016 when her district went for Clinton. The national focus on the race helped Comstock and Wexton raise more than $5 million in all, while outside groups spent more than $10 milli...
Gov. Larry Hogan is projected to have won re-election, dodging the so-called "blue wave" predicted nationwide and notching a historic victory for a Republican in deep-blue Maryland. Hogan, a popular incumbent, took pains during and since the 2016 campaign to distance himself from politics just miles away in Washington, and from President Donald Trump, whom Hogan did not endorseand did not vote for. Instead of a Republican, Maryland voters saw a pragmatist who reached across party lines. Hogan defeated Ben Jealous, the former NAACP president who himself eked out an unlikely victory in the Democratic primary over Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III. Hogan is the first Republican governor to win re-election in Maryland since Spiro Agnew in 196...
